  1. I recently lost my 98SE install to a power fluctuation and began experimenting with new stuff and that's some of my experiences, I hope this is of use to someone : I can say that do not install this SP after you have installed and run AutoPatcher. You will break the system so it will not even boot to safe mode. But installing SP3 and then AutoPatcher works out perfectly. AP will skip any update that SP3 put newer version of so there are no problems in sight, not for me ^^ Only thing that did not work out so well was NUSB35, I got exclamation mark in device manager and updating etc. did not help, but going to NUSB33 fixed it. I need to see if putting NUSB35 separately helps.
  2. There's still a problem with tabs on bottom, where you just cannot make out which tab is open, tab does not connect with view. It is one of the reasons I did not upgrade to 11.60. I filed in a bug report last time about it, but seems it did not get fixed. I sent in another bug report.
  3. I gave it a test and it did not make a difference, there were still crashes during scanning. address is always "01AF:xxxxxxxx". I called them Olaf effors
  4. I recently got a scanner from work that did not like windows 7 and I got to keep it. It is a Packard Bell Diamond 2450, which drivers I could not find, but I found out that Mustek BearPaw 2400 TA plus is same kind of deal and I got the scanner to work. Now there's a new problem : scanning crashes halfway through with a segfault in the driver, and then in kernel32.dll. At first I thought it is a KernelEx related issue as the driver had XP stuff in it too, but it turned out not to be the case : I removed some RAM sticks from my PC so it had 512MB in it, and scanning worked flawlessly. The machine takes some very nice scans but the driver seems so soil itself with 1GB+ of RAM. Is there anything that could be done about it ? I have previously thought of a "limit RAM" setting for an application, kind of like KernelEx settings tabs, but I have no idea how possible it may be... I had one network card too which seemed to crap out with segfaults all times. I don't remember what it was, but it may have had same kind of problem.
  5. my GF has X41 and you won't find any drivers for 98. I think some drivers from Wacom may allow you to do something but you should not count on it.
  6. I'm happy things sorted out I thought I let whole hell loose (I was the one on DA commenting on the theme used in RP....)
  7. It seemed to me that when you had driver from like 2004 and BIOS from 2008 it would not work out, but if you had BIOS from 2004 it would work. (Numbers I pulled out of my rear, to give the idea). I got stack errors, it kind of seems the driver got confused or something and eventually caused a stack fault.
  8. aha ...the more you know ^^ but sound stuff is still applicable for the most part I would guess
  9. But 98 does support WDM... ? or it won't work for video cards ?
  10. Going to network server did improve all disk access stuff in my case
  11. I have found that Silicon Image cards need to have their BIOS match the driver, if that's not the case you'll get lockups and the like once you get into windows, especially during driver install or on next reboot once driver is installed. Disabling the on-card BIOS fixes that, but it denies possibility to use these drives in DOS mode or boot from them.
  12. Whoa, this is some nice stuff I wonder if its worth to try it on some 2K/XP graphics drivers.....?
  13. Office 2000 runs fine here without swapfile, Corel Draw does nag me every time when you start it about missing swapfile, but it runs. I would not really worry about temp and stuff on 9x, unless you use some program that loves to create them and you know it, which in that case a small RAMdisk for TMP might be a good idea.
  14. In my case, the cable modem and router are a single device. when the time comes I will probably have to dig out my WRT and see if there;s some nice DD-WRT version on it to do some NAT business for me, unless cable modem+router can do it itself
  15. when numlock is off then you are unable to do those characters, instead you may get cursor movement
  16. Probably not the problem but do you have numlock in or out ?
  17. I would get a CD-ROM audio cable and run it from the drive to the sound card, will definitely work and even in pure DOS
  18. This gives food for thought on SSDing my HP NX6125 I'd love to put an SSD into it, the HDD is dying in it and SSDs are more or less vibration proof so the laptop can be used more freely
  19. On default compatibility mode of KEX it did crash, on XP mode it seemingly crashed but sprung back to life after few seconds. Every link you click will cause the program to halt for some seconds but it seems to run
  20. *Its really fast and lightweight *has cool boot logo *really secure as far as modern internet goes *DOS stuff works perfectly for the most part *Great "legacy" hardware support (there's a bunch of Yamaha I got that is useless in 2K+) *Easy to maintain... when something goes kablamo you fix it in DOS, not so easy on 2K+ I do wish I knew C and had time, so I could contiune KernelEx a bit, enough to make a lot of PC maintenance software run... its one of the reasons I cannot do my job on a 9x machine, lot of the maintenance soft won't run on 9x or runs wrong... plus modern HW support is well, crap haha
  21. NetMeter is pretty good, i've been using it for past few days and I like it
  22. IE7 or IE8 is probably never going happen on 9x I will install this new version as soon as I get home, this is exciting ^^

  24. WOW this program worked wonders upload speed got slightly lower so I got to tweak some things manually, but this is sweet
  25. Last month I got myself 120/10M connection and none of my PCs never got speeds above 30...40MBit, including few XP machines I have over. It did not matter if I used 100 or 1000Mbit LAN cards (though one XP machine got about 60MBit momentairly with a realtek crap, but not with a good Intel NIC). So today I had birthday (I'm 22 woot) and my mom brought her laptop with her to get some maintenance, and it had a 1Gbit NIC and bualbooted XP and Win7, so I did some tests and Win7 nicely hit 120MBit without any problems, but XP slugged at 30...40MBit range. So seems my problem is entirely software related... XP and 98SE seem to perform equally in my case, 98SE maybe a bit slower. Normal networking is pretty fast, no complaints on that part. What kind of things can be done to improve TCP/IP performance ?
