  1. So, basically I want all my icons to be arranged by type, but for example when I mess around with folder options or something things revert back to arrange by name. I've noticed that once I arrange stuff by type enough it will start applying it on newly opened things... I'm wondering if there's any tweak to force default file arrangement ? (but preserves already set stuff, like desktop)
  2. I have ran the network wizard, I have disabled the policy stuff, I have even messed with registry... fun thing was that I had none of this happen with my old 98 install, which should not have been any different from current one on the network part... XP does not log in with a password either, so I have no idea what password do I have to enter, since I have not specified any passwords anywhere... I'm beginning to feel I got to uninstall all network stuff and start over... EDIT: my old 98 setup had no trouble accessing files in a completely different network either... So I guess there are changes needed on the 98 side. I have tried adding different protocols and tried different login methods. I'm using "..." too much
  3. So, I have XP and 98SE machine, in same workgroup, files shared out, and I cannot access XP files from 98 site. I am greeted with a password prompt... I did not have any problems with that on my old but now dead 98SE setup, I could access files without problems... I don't really know what is different this time, and the steps I've done that I got from google have not worked... EDIT: password is asked when I want to access the XP PC, I don't see the files etc.
  4. I actually have a snapshot on one HDD but it is kinda old aswell... I don't trust optical media much, plus its cheaper to buy another HDD anyway
  5. I meant that I have not had drives bigger than 250GB, so I have no idea what does it do with larger drives... my windows install is trashed so I cannot check its help etc. to know... currently preparing a 120GB HDD to recive Windows 98SE
  6. Update: I abandon my setup and start doing a new one. I'll keep it around if somebody thinks it is worth to debug/attempt at resurrection...
  7. So when my new setup went completely berzerk (probably thanks to KEX 3.5 RC3, as it is when all the trouble started...) I thought I'd try to resurrect my old setup... so I used the PATCHM /M on startup and while I did not get VFAT init error, I did get lot of Fatal Exception 0D errors in VMM.VXD(at least so I recall for some of the errors, I know there was something else too...) At one point I even thought I had faulty RAM as I got errors on one exact same address in my new install, so I juggled RAMs around etc. which did not work... Right now i'm moving my data to one other HDD and I'll be using one blank HDD to create a new install, then once its done i'll copy the install on my good HDD and keep old HDD as a snapshot of good working and set up install... so in case I get crap happen again i'll restore things from the snapshot HDD...
  8. KillCopy did not seem to do anything here......
  9. I'd recommend removing RC3 and going back to something older... I had things work fine in the beginning (apart from the GIMP issue) but then all hell broke loose which I managed to partially solve for now. ...and I did not have viruses according to DOS NAV2005
  10. how about Paragon Partition Manager 9.0 ? I generally have used that to do fun stuff with storage devices, though not anything bigger than 250GB...
  11. Seems that KEX 4.5b1 and 4.5b2 allow me to install but they always say KEX install failed after reboot. Other versions of course don't let me install them... EDIT: I'll do a virus scan, with MS-DOS part of Norton 2005... EDIT: I don't not.. AND came out that the KERNEL32.DLL I extracted to C:\ got loaded instead what was in the SYSTEM folder, thus the fialure to install messages.... BUT other versions will still not install... beta 1 and 2 do though, currently I got beta 2 installed.
  12. Hmm, there was nothing in there in the registry.... Only KEX related thing I found in the registry was this : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\*\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\KernelEx
  13. The version right below it ^^
  14. http://supercopier.sfxteam.org/?q=node/type/download Currently I'm using this. It adds an icon on systray but so far it works nicely
  15. KernelEx 4.5 RC3 causes lot of GFX elements to be black in Gimp 2.2 First I thought it was caused by RP9 but after uninstalling it, things did not change... then I uninstalled KEX and everything was normal, after installing RP9 things remained OK aswell. So far other than that, I have not had problems with KEX. If needed I can provide some screenshots of the problem aswell. EDIT: I installed KEX again and I started getting errors on WMIEXE, if I moved the mouse over something I got an error... I could navigate between folders ando pen programs, after clicking close on the error windows many times, and I could uninstall KEX then. After reboot, shortcuts became ineffective and quicklaunch was gone. I had it before, and fix was to reinstall KEX and uninstall it, and when I reinstalled I still got the error. I did an install/uninstall with an older version and shortcuts became working again, and I had to manually enable quicklaunch... Now I got another problem which prevents me from installing any version of KEX. ERROR: Disable_platform_check:pattern not found EDIT: I forgot one detial... one install of KEX failed, it gave an error that install failed, and thus I uninstalled it and tried again, at form nothing works. EDIT: Seems I got KEX'ed KERNEL32.DLL in the system without DLL... I reverted it to KERNEL32.DLL form Win98 setup files, and now KEX install says it cannot open KERNEL32.BAK file, and suggests me to get the DLL from install media, so I copied the DLL to KEX dir in win folder and renamed it to the BAK hoping it works and I get the error I got before. Kinda makes me think KEX thinks its still installed...... ?
  16. Old versions of TeraCopy never worked on my 98SE install, nor did any of them say it supported 9x in the first place. FastCopy is nice, but I was more thinking on something that literally replaces windows' file operation stuff like TeraCopy does. I'm going to give a go on the alternatives listed in the link couple of posts ago.
  17. I don't like Windows Vista nor 7 much, but there is one thing I do like in them and it is file copying / moving, or should I say it does not cancel upon error, but does all it needs and then asks what to do with the problem files later. For Win2K/XP people can use TeraCopy, which does nice things aswell. I was wondering if there is anything such for Win9x ?
  18. I guess I'll do some directory juggling and have my old install boot instead of the new one and toy around with registy and the RAM limitation patch a bit. I don't intend to resurrect the old install (I have it around to get me some settings etc. from it to minimize time it takes to configure my stuff), as I was planning to do a reinstall anyway but had no excuse to do it EDIT: I'm also running a great deal of DOS programs daily, which on many are written by myself... I guess the patch won't interfere with that ?
  19. The registry file was ~12Mbytes in size, at one point I even tried to use a 9Mbyte registry file from a semi-recent backup but that did not work out (I have forgotten if I got VFAT error or not, I did get some other errors due to missing files). Anyway its (almost) too late now, I have fresh install in the works. I do have all of the old install left but I don't think i'll be experimenting any further with it, and I had other issues anyway. This time i'll make a "snapshot" of a fully set up install, so when some similiar issue happens, i'll restore the system from the said snapshot ^^
  20. So I installed AutoCAD 2002 on my 98SE box (KEX, RP9, AutoPatcher etc. etc. etc.) and after install it asked to reboot. so I did and I was greeted with the lovely "VFAT device initialization failed" message. So I booted in safe mode which luckily worked and uninstalled the program and deleted leftover files. Rebooted, and error still present. I checked autoexec.bat and other startup files and found nothing suspicious... I'd rather not install windows again, but if its the only options it will get used.
  21. Silverlight wants .NET 3.5 form what I recall, and one cannot install 3.0 or newer on 9x...
  22. Here's a mirror for everyone else who might need SP 1.5 and cannot find it : http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/4/21/1876835//WIN98SE_SP_15.rar
  23. I had issues with SP2.1, so I just installed SP1.5 on top of it which I had absolutely no problems with... later on SP3, that works great too (winamp 5.35 is the last version to run on unmodified win98SE, wel apart form unicows.dll, but winamp comes with it...)
  24. Ok, finally I got this running with more than 1GB of RAM I tweaked the MaxPhysPage to the max and its 48DCB, which gives 1164MB of RAM seen by windows
  25. I've been having no success getting my setup with with over 1GB of RAM, it works perfectly fine with 1GB and less, but once I add another 512MB I'll get "not enough memory" error on bootup. I have installed the VCACHE fix and set MaxPhysPage to 60000 (should be 1.5GB.... ???) if that matters, but so far I have had no success.
