  1. i think ive used both, once i finish my UA im most likely gonna re-install windows. the only thing is i cant test my cd out because vmware keeps on giving me an error about the scsi drivers not being supported when im not even using them in the first place
  2. yea i think im gonna install windows again once i finish my UA. i gotta remake my start.bat cuz i deleted my whole OEM folder by accident... i didnt install it using nlite, it was just a normal xp 64 corperate edition, and it recognized both cores for a little while, its just when i installed the old memory along with the new ones it screwed stuff up...
  3. I have an A8N-SLI with an Nvidia Geforce 7600GT and it works really good. I'd highly recommend it. the geforce is really good for being only $180 (compared to the $300 plus you can pay for one) havent really tried to overclock it though. i suggest looking into this combo its worth it
  4. since nobody has mentioned it yet, throw the drive in a ziplock bag and put it in the freezer for a few hours. this shrinks the read/write heads and allows data to be recovered. i know it sounds crazy but i did it myself once and it actually works. best of luck to ya.
  5. im happy with my thermaltake polo 4-in-1 even though it does sound like a hair drier above 4000rpms i definately does the job well. the fins are always cool to the touch, the hottest my amd64 x2 3800 has even been was 128 degrees farenheit and that was when i didnt have my ac on and i was playing UT2004 for like an hour. other then that its usually between 83 degrees and about 110 degrees. definately worth the $40
  6. Has anyone had problem with their Asus A8N-SLI or AMD 64 x2 3800?? I dont mean driver problems but problems in general. Ever since I got everything all together I've been having an assortment of problems in both Windows and Ubuntu. In windows it took me about a week to get a fully functioning OS that didnt have wierd (unusual) quirks or where things didnt work. I finally had to Install XP x64 to get everything to work right. Stuff went good for about a week or so and now stuff is getting screwey again. I installed some old(er) ram that i had laying around from my previous asus board and when i booted into windows it was saying that it found an ACPI x64 Uniprocessor and it installed it. I removed the ram and now i cant get it to go back to the dual core drivers. Also my Harddrives have been acting up, stuff has been running extremely slow compared to usual (my HDDs seem to be written to ALOT, im pretty sure its not frag problems or spyware/viruses). it takes atleast 30 seconds to a minute for nLite to start up when it used to open instantaneously. Also my computer seems to freeze randomly. I ran an extensive HDD check on my western digital HD (which has windows installed on it) via the ultimate boot cd and it didnt give me any errors. In ubuntu, stuff seems to freeze sometimes too which never happened before. ive also noticed that in windows some of my shortcuts have disappeared from the start menu (windows update, computer management, etc...) I was just wondering if anyone has had problems like this, ive been thinking it might be my processor since everything i bought off line came in a box and i bought from online retailers. i bought my cpu off of ebay and the guy said it was OEM and in working order and said it was never used. when I got it, the dude had wrapped it up in tissue paper and put it in a box. i was thinking that might have something to do with it. heres my complete system specs: A8N-SLI 2x512mb Kingston DDR400 RAM (Which were on Asus's QVL List) AMD64 x2 3800 Thermaltake Polo 3 in 1 heatsink Nvidia GeForce 7800GT Enermax Liberty ELT500AWT Two DVD Burners I'd appriciate any comments or suggestions on this since i've spent about $800 on this total and have had nothing but problems thanks
  7. i went to their site and downloaded the drivers for my processor and installed them but it didnt work i just sent them an email about it. Hopefully they'll have a solution.
  8. first off this is my setup: A8N-SLI AMD 64 X2 3800 2x512mb DDR400 Kingston RAM when i installed x64 i know for sure i was running both cores because it would list both cores under device manager and i would have 1 graphs in the task manager. i figured since i had some older ddr400 transcend ram that i used on my previous asus board, i would try and use it. when i booted back into windows i said it found new hardware and was installing this "ACPI Uniprocessor x64-based" processor and i only see on graph in the task manager. would it be as easy as uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the asus one??
  9. my computer (A8N-SLI, AMD64 X2 3800) wouldnt work with the 32 bit edition of XP pro it would get all screwey on me for some odd reason. x64 seems to work fine, it has the occasional windows quirks but thats about it
  10. all i have to say is this is freakin awesome i'm starting to create a UA for x64 and was wondering if there was an update pack for it, obviously there is and with alotta great addons! good job
  11. doom3 and UT2004 work fine for me on x64
  12. anyone know of a good disk defragmenter that works in x64?? diskeeper 10 says it wont install in x64 and perfect disk 7 installs but then gives an error when you try to open it... nevermind, i didnt know they had a 64 bit version of it
  13. im using onboard sound, and which color port would i connect it to? right now its connected to both green and blue
  14. i only do this when im playin games...
  15. i have a 2.1 Klipsch sound system that i have hooked up via the purple input/output box that came with my old AIW Radeon 8500DV since its the only thing that i know of that will output the sound and allow me to connect the RCA jacks that the surround sound system requires. Now heres my problem.... i want to sell the card but i dont know how i will be able to output the sound without the box that came with the AIW. I saw that some of the high end Audigy cards come with a drive bay that has RCA jacks but i dont have/want to spend that kind of money. Is there a simple solution for this??
  16. yea i just ignore the diskeeper errors and i believe the sata and pata driver errors were because i slected the wrong drivers in nlite by accident. also the were the RAID drivers so i dont need them anyway. currently im using the 32 bit version of xp, that is until i can get my hands on the 64 bit version i fixed 95% of the errors i was gettin by remastering a UA cd and i also think it had to do with combining the ram that i used for my old asus board with the ram for this board. just for your knowledge im using the Asus A8N-SLI
  17. im really starting to think all this 64 bit crap is wayy more trouble then its worth. after about 10 or so tries i finally get windows installed, and once i do alotta stuff is screwed up! first off windows says it cant install my SATA and PATA drivers cuz they arent supported by my processor and some of the programs that were bundled with my board dont work cuz they arent supported by my processor. also windows is giving me errors about the snap-ins not working or something and firefox wont load cuz it tells me its already open but its unresponsive and i have to close it or reboot the computer. i did both and even uninstalled it and reinstallled it and the same thing still happens! this is starting to remind me of why i switched to linux....
  18. i reset the BIOS to defaults cuz i made it crash by overclocking the cpu to 2.6ghz and the PCIe to like 106mhz im gonna try and flash the bios with the most recent version to see if that helps with anything. i have UBCD but not the most recent one, should d/l that now. ever since i found it like 2 years ago i love it, its such a great tool. edit: i disconnected all of my usb devices that i didnt need and tweaked the bios a lil and got rid of the unknown device but it still says "Error Loading Operating System" right before it goes into the GUI portion of the install. this is really starting to p*** me off.... Im gonna try and wipe the drive with something on UBCD and ill post up what happens
  19. hmm ive heard mixed things about the 64 bit edition of XP, just like what some of you guys said one of my friends said he didnt notice much difference from 32 bit to 64 bit. i just might have to try the 64 bit for myself and find out
  20. hey guys, something wierd is happening when i try to install windows XP on my new rig. First i had all of my drives connected and i booted into the setup and got to the partition selection screen and i noticed that it listed 3 drives when i only have two. the drives listed where my WD 800JB, my Maxtor DM +9, and an "unknown drive" and under this "unknown drive" it said in parenthesis "there is no disk in this drive" i tried to install windows to both drives and both times before it would load into the GUI it would say "error loading operating systen" i tried to remedy it a few times (ex. using different XP cds) and nothing worked. i then decided to concentrate on finding out what this "unknown drive" was. i disconnected my 4 drives (2 HDDs and 2 Optical Drives) one at a time to see if any of them was causing this. it seems like none of them were causing this because i unplugged three out of the 4 drives and this "unknown drive" was still listed. this is the setup of my rig: Asus A8NSLI MoBo AMD 64 x2 3800 1.5gb DDR 400mhz Western Digital 800JB (80 GB) Maxtor Diamond Max +9 SATA (80GB) NEC CD/DVD/Dual Layer DVD burner Lite-On CD burner Nvidia GeForce 7600GT (i think this is right dont remember lol) Liberty 500wat Modular PSU has anyone had problems like this before?? heres 2 pics i took of the screen so u can see what im talkin about (the pics are with 3 out of the 4 drives disconnected)
  21. finally someone mentioned this! ive been using it for atleast a year, and only had problems when i "deleted" all the stuff it found, instead of "fixing" them. luckly there was a backup as for linux, yes it is better then windows in many ways (no registry, no fragged disks, etc..) but xp is easier to do stuff in i use both.... thats hilarious! kinda like how ad-aware and spybot used to detect each other as spyware
  22. never used autopatcher, so i voted for ryanvm, also i like the other stuff he adds in to the "full" packs
  23. yea thats exactly what confused me thanks for clearin it up
  24. the best anti spyware proggy is definately Hitman Pro it includes 10 or so spyware programs and completely automates the scanning process! hit start and let it run for liek a half hour and you should be rid of anything! dont worry because the page is in Dutch, the installer is in English
  25. very logical point, and yes i was thinkin of tryin to use linux for it...
