  1. its definately dead, i havent used one in god know how long! i dont even have one in my computer for 90% of the stuff that you would need a floppy for you can use a cd or a usb drive for
  2. now it works for some reason, i was scared at first because i had set it to RAID /AHCI and vista took forever to boot and would constantly use all the cpu cycles and MCE wouldnt even load. so i changed it to /ACI and everything worked fine. thats odd that it didnt work before when i tried it.
  3. your a member at srn? i guess im not there enough to know all of the new members edit: i found a few on ebay for pretty cheap, im gonna keep an eye on them. newegg has one listed for $52 but when you go to their site its not listed anymore all the other ones listed by froogle are about $130
  4. i had already bought the board before i bought the cpu, i had no idea at the time that am2 even existed until i ordered an am2 socket athlon by mistake i also dont want to drop $200+ for a new ram/mobo/processor when 2 out of the three are most likely good
  5. im over my friends house and he told me to try unplugging everything except the ram, cpu, video card and power to the mobo and see if that helps, it stopped reading the HDD at boot up but theres still no display. he also had an extra pc speaker that he told me to try, i plugged it in and there still werent any beeps. were going to try a few more things and swap out some of my stuff for his, if none of this works i guess im gonna get a new motherboard
  6. i'll look into them, but im still partial to asus edit: i cant seem to find any prices for the nf4 ultra d, ive put it into froogle and pricewatch and neither of them can find it
  7. since my computer died i was wondering if it was possible to connect my sata hdd that i use for storage to my dads dell XPS which already has 2 sata raptors connected to it, the were in a raid array once he got it but i broke it so we could use them separately. when i was testing everything out i figured if i just connected the hdd it should read it and it wouldnt work. in the bios it said that i couldnt enable slots 1&3 cuz it was in combination mode, so i tried selecting raid /achi and raid /aci and neither of them seemed to work. am i missing something??
  8. Try to clear CMOS from your motherboard and test the system again. already tried that to no avail i kind of tried that, but my problem is my pc speaker doesnt work so no beeps are available. first i just thought it was the speaker was messed up then i found out one of the leads came undone and had my father reattach it, and it still didnt work. i might just be easier to buy a new speaker first instead of buying a whole new motherboard. those little things cant be that expensive can they?
  9. sorry guys in im a rush ill reply to the others later.. the nforce4 based ultra-d board i looked at didnt necessarily say that it had SLI, but that it had support for two PCI-E x16 cards, which is sli in my view, i only need one x16 slot, throw in as many PCI-E slots as you want (forget what the rate of the regular ones are)
  10. you make a good point, but then you suggest a board that goes against what you just said any other suggestions??
  11. i told that to my dad (whos a former electrician) and he said that was the only reasoning he could think of, either way it didnt work
  12. nope didnt work, tried it twice. whats the reasoning behind it?? im curious about this one....
  13. nah, didnt feel it was that necessary since i was only removing the dvd drive and not messing with cards/ram/motherboard parts. all i did was turn it off
  14. what do you guys think is the motherboard that gives you the best bang for the buck? im partial to asus (only had one other board that wasnt made by them outta 5 or so boards), i like their little add-ons/gadgets that come integrated on the board or via software. im also a moderate overclocker, i plan on gettin a new case this summer, finally after 6 years lol. i also have a nvidia geforce 7600 so i dont need integrated video, nor would i use dual lan connections. i also dont see myself buying two video cards in the near future. suggestions? im thinking about the Asus A8N-E, i currently have a A8N-SLI SE (but its most likely fried see my 'horrible problem' thread) would this be a downgrade without regards to SLI?
  15. extensively tested everything else, i forgot i had another socket 939 cpu layin around, that wasnt the problem. i also tested the PSU output with a voltmeter and everything was on par, looks like its either the motherboard or the ram. most likely the motherboard, its a shame its only a year old
  16. awesome collection, would be great if someone could make those into a program that you can select ones that you want and it spits out a reg file. i took me forever to delete/comment out the tweaks i didnt want
  17. WD was primary master, maxtor was SATA, and the drive i took out of my computer was the secondary master, and the other dvd drive was the secondary master (i believe the info about the dvd drives are correct, i can never rememeber) neither of the HDDs are "technically" bootable, since windows is an a** and places the MBR and all of the necessary files on the first HDD it sees, which is the SATA drive and doesnt contain any actual operating systems (its a storage drive) while the WD contains all of the operating systems (xp/vista/ubuntu). once i get this straightened out i might actually change that around to avoid further aggrevation, the only reason i did it like that was because of the transfer rates (sata being 150 and PATA being 133) did that with both harddrives and both dvd drives, still the same result. dont say that i dont wanna spend another $100-150 on a new mobo wierder things have happened
  18. ok so here is the simplified version of what happened: my dads dvd drive wasnt working so i took out one of my two dvd drives while the computer was off and then placed it in my dads computer, and all went well from there. A few hours later i get done messing with my dads computer and go to turn on mine, i notice that the HDD activity led is blinking constantly during POST also at this point theres no display on the monitor (it waits for a signal for a few seconds then goes to sleep), so i turn the computer off and turn it back on again, same thing. I let it sit for about 15 minutes and try again, it reads the HDDs very little during POST and everything seems to run fine but yet I still dont have a display. Also to make things even worse my computer speaker doesnt work, so I cant hear if post will give me any error beeps. I remember once upon a time seeing a pci expansion card that when plugged in would give you various info about the post, IIRC through leds and possibly sounds but i think it was around $100 and I cant seem to find it anywhere. Anyone know of any troubleshooting hardware like this? Heres my specs (All of which are a little over a year old, excluding the HDDs which are about 5yrs and 2yrs respectively): Asus A8N-SLI Motherboard (No Onboard Video) AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200 w/thermaltake polo cooler Western Digital PATA 80 GB Maxtor SATA 80GB 2x512mb Kingston DDR Nvidia Geforce 7600 Liberty 500watt PSU Heres the things I've tried so far: Tested both HDDs in my fathers computer, both worked fine. Tested the video card in my fathers computer and it worked fine. Tested the monitor and it works fine. Took everything out of the motherboard and reseated/reconnected everything. Cleared the BIOS Checked the VGA cable from the video card to the monitor. Unplugged the Slave DVD drive to see if the computer was looking for a secondary master but could only find a slave Put the DVD drive back in my computer, its reading the HDD(s) like crazy again, im gonna let it do that for a little while to see if anything happens what could be the problem here? I've tried everything I can possibly think of and nothing works! Ive been troubleshooting computers for about the past 8 or so years (not professionally) and usually I can figure something out within a few days, but this one has left me in a quandary. Any Ideas?
  19. i figured this was the best place to put this.. i wrote a batch script that deletes my install folder and various other things after the installation is complete. i just found out now that you need to add the switch /S for it to delete the contents of sub-folders. my problem is how do i get rid of the folders themselves? this is the command im issuing: del /S /Q %systemdrive%\install
  20. i dont think nlite would have anything to do with it, i think its the 64 bit version of xp since some of the keys are slightly different. have u successfully tried them on xp 64?? also there werent any error messages, it installed fine and the files are in their respective locations.
  21. how did i not find this earlier?? i always wanted something that would toggle hidden files on and off easily, this is awesome edit: sadly out of cmd prompt, file ext, hidden files, and sub menu only cmd prompt works. im running an nlited version of xp64, can anyone get this to work for me? it would be awesome
  22. well then is there anyway that i can get this to work?
  23. yep ive tried XP Pro (32 bit), XP Pro SP2 (32bit), XP 64 Corp, and my Nlited XP 64 Corp how do i do that?
  24. vlite wont run because it says it needs me to install the stuff for the file system filter manager, so i tried every XP cd i have and every 2003 cd i have and none of them seem to work, what can i do about this?
