  1. yeah I considered that, buut... the ATI HD 2900XT is a full 512bit and because of that my guess is it can use the bandwidth. That is if I get a second 2900 within about two years as a fairly cheap upgrade So does anyone know if you can run the ATI HD 2900XT in the 680i motherboard? Or well my real question is, what is a good mobo for approx $200 that supports the E6600 CPU, and the ATI HD2900XT in Crossfire mode with 16x on both PCI-e lanes...
  2. Alright I almost finished my computer research and was about to order my computer, including an 8800gts, when I saw the latest drivers for the ATI HD 2900XT. It seems it performs a lot better and as it is only 50 bucks more I think I will get it. Now here is my problem. I am wanting the Intel E6600 Dual core CPU. I found a pretty nice mobo: ASUS P5N32-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i Well see.... I could go for an intel chipset such as the Intel 975x, but when it runs crossfire it changes the PCI-e down to 8x not the full 16x. SO my question is... could I run ONE ATI HD 2900XT in the Asus P5N32-E mobo even though it is then Nvidia 680i chipset? Could I run two ATI cards in crossfire on this mobo? I am askign this because I want to be able to run the 16x on both PCI-e slots. I plan to get a second card and run either SLI or Crossfire in about two years when prices go down, as it would be an fairly cheap upgrade. I hear that the only thing making ATI cards only work with crossfire on ATI chipsets is software, so... are there drivers that are modded that would let me run crossfire on an Nvidia 680i mobo? If not, is there mobo for approx $200 that uses the Intel E6600 CPU, yet has Dual PCI-e both running at 16x that supports crossfire? Thanks greatly, as I can't seem to find the info even after hours of looking
  3. yeah the 120mm fans in front are cheaper also, it just seems that air directly on the computer parts would work really well. Thanks for the link, as I've never heard of SilentPCReview, it looks like it could help... Are the price drops going to be large ones? I have that case with two of the cages (six hard drives in RAID5). They're designed to not only cool the case, but to cool your drives. Some hard drives can run rather warm, which just adds additional heat in the case (obviously). The cages help reduce that by keeping the drives ice cool. The only thing I don't like about the cages is that you can only put three drives in each cage. Supermicro has some setups that allow four or five drives in the same amount of space. The system I have all of those drives in is my Active Directory domain controller, DHCP server, AD DNS, WINS, file server, etc, etc, etc. Right now it has eight hard drives in it (two in the upper bay, six in two iCages). Not that I move it that often, but when I do it's cumbersome because of the size and weight! so I've been asking around and doing more research, and I'm wondering... will an extra 120mm fan really cool it off more? I plan to run 3-4 hdds so I don't need the hdd space, just the cooling. Maximum PC had their "Target your Hotspots" segment, and they stated that they where surpized that... and I quote, "we were actually surprised to find that running the second 8cm fan up front didn't have an impact on the case's ambient temperature." The case they where using was the Zalman Fatal1ty FC-ZE1 so it isn't may case, and it is an 80mm not a 120, but... would it really change temps? My temps are good right now, but when I get my new rig I assume my vid card (either the 8800 series, or the ATI HD2900XT card) will run really hot so I am wanting to keep them cool. Processor won't be an issue as I'll use my Thermaltake Big Typhoon 120mm as it works in an LGA 775 and I plan to get a Dual core anyways... So what do you think? Will an extra 120mm fan or a 250mm side fan really cool things down at all? or cool them down enough to make it worth my money?
  4. Its actually a double dual core CPU. The two halves interface over the FSB. Its not a real quad core. Its a little faster than a dual core though. Not as much as you would expect from a real quad. yeah I know that it is just double dual core CPU, but it still does perform better then a Dual core. Sure not 2x faster, but if it is only 50 bucks more or something, or well... even 100 bucks more to get quad core I mean... sure they don't have a lot of programs that work on it but hey, I know Steam is working on Quad core stuff, and my guess is other companies are also... So what's the whole thing with Barcelona then? http://www.legitreviews.com/article/426/1/ http://64-bit-computers.com/amd-quad-core-...na-opteron.html Isn't Barcelona a real quad CPU? So are they scrapping it? I thought I heard Barcelona was delayed till September... I haven't heard any other info about the status on it other then that though...
  5. really!? awesome. I was just going to go for Dual core, but if a quad core is near $250 then I will probably go for it. I hope to spend about $1000-$1300 on my computer this summer. I take it you're getting a new computer this summer also? Oh off topic, Nvidia videocards run on ATI chipsets correct? That is in SLI...
  6. yeah the 120mm fans in front are cheaper also, it just seems that air directly on the computer parts would work really well. Thanks for the link, as I've never heard of SilentPCReview, it looks like it could help... Are the price drops going to be large ones?
  7. I currently own a Thermatake Armor Case, and as I plan to get a new computer in the next month or so I am looking for extra cooling methods to keep my new computer cool. I plan to go for either the 8800gts, or the ATI HD 2900 graphics card, but i'm not sure what one yet. Also I plan to go for an Intel Core 2 processor meaning I will be creating a lot of heat with my gaming machine. I am looking at either getting an additional 120mm fan in the front of the case or a 250mm fan on the side of the case. It seems many people tell me that you should have airflow simple: FRONT to BACK and only that. That side airducts mess up your airflow and will cause hotspots, is this true? I mean.... I would think a 250mm fan on the side would cool off my computer parts very well, and the 180mm fan in the front would handle my HDDs. Then my 180mm in the back and 80mm on top would push hot air out. Well... would it work better to just get the 3hdd cage with 180mm fan for the front, or get the 250mm fan for the side of my case? Side pannel frm Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-A2400-Sy...w/dp/B000HS6KGI Cage from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-iCage-A2...4654625-3479904 I don't think prices get any lower then the ones I found at Amazon. I plan to use my Thermaltake Typhoon 120mm CPU cooler for my processor so the processor should be doing pretty well, my main concern is keeping the chips on the mobo, the videocard, and the overall case temp down. Also I don't want to buy a PSU anytime soon, so... keeping that cool is nice
  8. I plan on using 802.11g connection, and from what I understand the distance is better with g, as apposed to b. So do you have an antenna at both ends then, or only at your end? because I plan on only having the antenna at my place, as my friend doesn't want to spend the money on getting an antenna himself... Ummm, I thought about getting a amplifier, but my plan is to see how this works first, so my real question is... do you know of a good card then? I found one that had the atheros core by dlink, but it was like $110, and well... I don't really want to spend a good 100 dollars on a wireless card. I suppose if that is the only way it will work, I might, but that is a good chunk of cash...
  9. Alright, I am one of those who are stuck using dialup at home, because the cable company won't extend their service by the 1/4 needed to get to my house. I looked into DSL, and it isn't available. I looked into satellite, and it costs to much, so my plan is to make a biquad satellite mod, and get wireless of one of my friends down the street. They live about 1000-1500 feet from our house, and the path is obstructed slightly by trees, but as it will be fall soon, I hope it will work well at least during the fall... I already made the satellite, and ordered the cords last night. I plan on borrowing a wireless card from a different friend to test this out. I assume it will work, so my question is... any advice on a good wireless card? I want one as powerful as you can get, while not spending more then $50. I would like to keep it like 30-40, but I am willing to spend 50 if needed. I looked into mimo cards a bit, but as I only have one satellite moded right now, and it would cost a good $60 to mod a second one, I'm thinking that a mimo card wouldn’t' do much good, as they are based on dual antennas. So does anyone know of a wireless card that has high wattage output, to get a better signal, and maybe getting the prism core, or the atheros core, as I hear they have "Special" things that other cards can't do. like.... shhhhh hack a network's encryption. I'd only want to do this if I lose my connection with my friend, and then I'd just have to get a connection of some random person who I can link to... If you have any questions as to what a biquad mod really is, this is the main site I used: http://meta.engadget.com/2005/11/15/how-to...-dish-antenna/2
  10. Yeah I heard that DFI is great for OC also, but also that they can have issues. Like some people's mobos die and such. You hear anything about how reliable they are for longterm? yeah I was thinking Asus or DFI also, and that the mix of PCI-e and AGP isn't a good idea, but I wasn't sure if there where any KNOWN issues from the comob...
  11. Alright, my uncle is wanting to upgrade his PC. He currently only has an APG 9800pro OC to the stock speeds of the XT, although as he is a big gamer (mainly FPS) he wants to upgrade his video card. He wants to move to PCI-e in this upgrade, and is thinking more along the lines of Nvidia 7600 or 7800, although he is really just looking for whatever works best for the price. My question is not about the video card in particular though, my question is about mobo brands. Here is the email he sent me about it. The reason he was looking at the AGP/PCI-e combo was because he wanted to maybe stick with his 9800pro for a little longer, and maybe wait out till a better or cheaper card comes out, although he realizes that there MIGHT be issues with the AGP/PCI-e combo. Anyone hear of any issues an AGP/PCI-e combo? How about each of the brands? What mobo would you suggest? Thanks greatly.... This is a part of what he emailed me: Asus A8N-E, MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, DFI INFINITY NF4 ULTRA, ASRock 939Dual-sata2 (this one has AGP and PCIe and can upgrade to the new socket for AMD too.) I think any of the four MB's will be good but just wondering what others thought too. I have been leaning towards the DFI but not sure about it's stability compared to MSI and Asus. Thanks for your input. Thanks any and everyone...
  12. I'm not sure what you are saying I should do with that. I should change my Autoexec.nt file using notepad to all of that then? Or is it just a bat file? I think you are saying change the Autoexec.nt file. How did you find this fix?
  13. Alright I did the EDIT command, and yes the MS-DOS editor does appear. No I am not running XP 64bit Not sure about any other dos programs, as I dont' have any that I know of. I thought that the Asus probe for my mobo (only like a few years old) was built in windows and wasn't 16 bit, could I be wrong? That file is not in my repair folder... any other ideas?
  14. Nope. Never even heard of notepad2. I did a ton of work with my Nlite disk though. I have all the patches slipstreamed into it, and a ton of other fixes, so I assume it just messed up, but I really don't feel like doing a reformat. The file was missing from my system32 folder. I put it in there, but it still doesn't help. The file was named "AUTOEXEC.NT_" so I renamed it "AUTOEXEC.NT" now I get this error:
