  1. I never could get windows remote assistance to work consistently i use remote desktop, VNC or logmein.com instead
  2. ok first thing: open task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) on the processes tab, find mrofinu572.exe and end task on it then this might be tricky without process explorer or icesword but we need to find the svchost.exe that is running under your username (NOT SYSTEM or NETWORK SERVICE) and end task on it as well check taskmgr again and see if these processes restarted themselves if they are working together, we will need other software if they are both gone from the list, then re run hijackthis! and check the following: C:\WINDOWS\mrofinu572.exe C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (yes this sounds like something you wouldnt want to do but the real svchost is in C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe NOT C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FAE15F7F-939C-4E3C-B4F5-F81576FE72C6} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\hoqezigo83122.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FB93CED7-E0D5-4351-A6D5-0691903AD813} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [runner1] C:\WINDOWS\mrofinu572.exe 61A847B5BBF728173599284503996897C881250221C8670836AC4FA7C8833201749139 O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iESet] IExplorer.dll .dbt O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [iESet] IExplorer.dll .dbt O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [iESet] IExplorer.dll .dbt do a fix checked on those then wait about 5 seconds and scan again to see if all the items were removed or if we have a porcess running still thats adding them back for us. if everything else goes well, run a complete virus scan with anything but Norton (AVG is free) and reboot.
  3. I dont know of any that will signal to the pc but we have a bunch of "APC Smart-UPS 1500 XLM" that can turn off their outlet groups selectively in the event of a failure -just put your 2 PCs on there and they would go down -not soft but they wouldn't leech your power. the other idea I had is to wire the output relays directly to the motherboards power on/off button. but the drawback there is if the alarm is triggered once, the pc would soft shutdown but would start back up if it was triggered again (power comes back on but goes off) I doubt that UPS is the same size you'd be looking for your desktops (theyre buly as heck and weigh a ton) but i know that those 2 features exist on that model. If either of those ideas work for you just look for a workstation class with controllable outlet groups or output relays
  4. setup a proxy server (squid and SARG) and pipe their net connection through it -then you have an exact log of what sites they visited and the times we use that to restrict/monitor our computer labs we have also used a piece of software called desktop detective that works quite well. Its not free but its not expensive -contrary to what youd think by reading the google results it os NOT malware but it IS SPYware. you can make it send reports/screenshots to you via email or if you can connect by ip to the machine directly, you can view the activity real time and see a screenshot every few seconds. there site used to be http://www.bitlogic.co.uk/ but it looks like they might be defunct
  5. try this: open document 1 by doubleclicking it launch excel then open the 2nd file if you double click them both, they can sometime open in the same window (depending on office version) but if you open them like this, they should always show in 2 windows
  6. Disable 'simple' filesharing would be the easiest way (im just guessing that its on) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874
  7. Xpize can modify the files of an XP ISO and they have a SDK so you could roll your own http://www.xpize.net/?page=home
  8. Heres my current one: its kinda overboard on the carbon but i was just playing around in paintshop
  9. confirmed. its doing it to me too -it just keeps downloading the old list and then prompting that theres a newer version try this list until jcarle figures this out http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=103342
  10. if you just want the Microsoft Zune theme or Royale Noir, its not necessary to patch your uxtheme.dll the microsoft Zune theme can be downloaded from microsoft Here
  11. look at it this way, now you have an excuse to upgrade that 40GB to a larger drive
  12. Im a minimalist when it comes to antivirus software If i see a popup window from my AV i want it to tell me it detected a virus, and depending on severity, either zap it without confirmation or ask me for input. That is the only time (post install) i want to see my antivirus I will not use an AV that: thinks it needs more than 1 systray icon (liveupdate&engine on some nortons, liveupdate, engine&'antispyware' on others) Hooks itself to every part of the OS -I'm waiting for the Norton Antivirus IE Toolbar so i can 'conveniently search for viruses on my system while browsing' has a Gui that is skinned -to me this is like seeing a 300 pound doughnut eating police officer. AVs are not supposed to be a resource hogs. they are supposed to hide in the background until needed and save your a** just in the nick of time and the number 1 reason why I hate norton AV: It keeps deleting my Angry IP Scanner from my pen drive because its a 'potentially unwanted program'
  13. it did the same thing to me once. I didnt recall changing it but i assumed it was caused by the same leprechaun that lives in my house and moves my desktop icons around while i sleep.
  14. Might try the info from Howie in this thread http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-5...P-Home-OEM.html
  15. click options at the top right of the thread =and choose 'switchto: standard'
  16. http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/vista grab 165.01, Extract it, then replace the nv4_disp.inf in the extracted folder with The Modified INF run the setup.exe in that folder and tada! you have the latest nvidia drivers on your Geforce 4 card You can also use the INF enhancer to create a custom INF that will install the drivers with some compatiblity/performance tweaks http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/enhancer --EDIT-- sorry redxii, didnt see your post there
  17. Its back. In glorious 3D and this time is more than 256 colors (though it only needed 8 -it was that awesome) http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots...?group_id=85144 (the screenshots dont do it justice) About the original for the kiddos: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scorched_Eart...omputer_game%29
  18. well I assume you have windows install at the moment so if you can locate the type of SATA controller in device manager, we might be able to help but since dell doesnt tell us who manufactured the sata chipset on that board (I assume intel) but if you could provide us with the full name od the SATA controller then we could attempt to locate the TXTSETUP drivers
  19. IF your seriously thinking about using a non hard drive device as a hard drive, you should probably buy a device thats at least designed for the stresses youll be subjecting it to. As Zxian mentioned, Flash memory has a limited amount of read/writes built in and will likely fail faster than your current drives. I would recommend downloading a HDD temp monitor program such as hdd-thermometer and see what temps your reaching. If your burning through drives and keeping your temps right, then switch manufacturers I use Maxtor, Seagate, or Western Digital and avoid everything else (Especially IBM 'Deathstars') But in the interest or answering your question: Sandisk. period. thats the only manufacturer I would consider trusting for the type f use youre looking for
  20. I assume you are looking for a "TXTSETUP" or "F6" driver for XP setup because your windows XP setup is not detecting any drives. dell doesn't list a SATA controller driver for a 4600 or 4600C on the site. is the SATA port on a card that may have not been included with the system? If it is, are their an model/part #s on it that might let us know what manufacturer/driver we need
  21. no but if a machine had a password stored that was now incorrect (it wont store it until it works once) then windows will sometime connect using that information and return an access denied error instead of asking for credentials. have you tried mapping the share to the server via loopback? Start->Run->cmd->net use x: \\127.0.0.1\NAMEOFSHARE try creating a new administrator level account user on the server called 'sharetest' and give it a password and then map a drive on the remote side using it Start->Run->cmd->net use y: \\192.168.1.XXX\NAMEOFSHARE /user:sharetest /savecred and use sharetests password when prompted if that fails, try adding sharetest to NAMEOFSHARE on both the share and security tabs of the share properties I've been assuming that you are accessing the server but getting a legit 'access denied' error but since errors are not always what they seem, you might try troubleshooting it as though the PC isn't able to connect to the server and the 'access denied' error is leading us in the wrong direction do you have a firewall running on the server? is port 445 open for TCP and UDP locally on the server? Start->Run->cmd->netstat /an look for lines like TCP 0.0.0.0:445 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING UDP 0.0.0.0:445 *:* is port 445 TCP accessible remotely by the client? Start->Run->cmd->nmap.exe NAMEORIPOFSERVER -p T:445 Interesting ports on NAMEORIPOFSERVER: PORT STATE SERVICE 445/tcp open microsoft-ds If you haven't noticed by now, i'm just guessing but maybe well find something by tossing (somewhat)educated guesses at it
  22. this seems to be a reoccurring problem http://www.google.com/search?as_q=wzc+nlit...ch=www.msfn.org from what i found your best bet is to use an alternative WLAN utility or rebuild your Nlite CD, take out less, and reinstall http://www.msfn.org/board/Wireless_Network...256#entry453256
  23. from what i can find its usually associated with an IRC "chat" program called Mirc or vincula but it can be any application that uses an installer that doesnt recognize long file names. look in you c:\ folder for a file named 'Program' if you open it in notepad, it will contain the rest of the path that the installer was supposed to use and may tell you what caused the problem in the first place but the easiest fix is just to renane the file or delete it.
  24. sorry that part you quoted wasn't directed at you it was kinda a passive aggressive comment toward the few people that usually follow mine anytime I mention that one of my PCs might BSOD/Crash/Lockup
