  1. sysprep is just a 'best practice' sort of thing. I Dupe with a hardware duplicator, PING, and Altiris and i dont sysprep on any of them unless i have issues duping them
  2. wow that takes me back. my guess is they got pulled cause only the .. was useful inside a gui since the . could only serve as a drag/drop target (and why not use the blank space in the window) as for the .. id like to see it make a comeback (especially in vista since somebody at MS decided that back was the same thing as up)
  3. according to nortons site, you dont need to uninstall before running the removal tool http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039 so that cuts you down to 2 steps however there is also an official yet unsupported utility from symantec called NoNav that is supposed to scrub everything related to norton AV from the system http://www.mickelson.org/files/zips/nonav.zip (found via http://www.mcse.ms/message1638323.html ) that might take things down to 1 step

  6. http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/0,1000000...39290393,00.htm What i want to know is how many of the people that felt it was necessary to sue seagate actually have the brainpower to utilize the 'lost' hard drive space for something other than storing their emails about how 'bill gates together with myspace.com will cure 1 child of aids for every time this email is forwarded' If you feel you were wronged and have had trouble sleeping since you purchased your retail drive between 22 March, 2001 and 26 September, 2007 you may fill out the form at http://www.harddrive-settlement.com/secure/fileNew.aspx and fianlly get a good nights rest.
  7. Should be just a matter of changing the following in winnt.sif [GuiUnattended] ProfilesDir="C:\Documents and Settings\" to [GuiUnattended] ProfilesDir="C:\Users\" http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/19/ any properly coded install program should install stuff that would normally go in c:\Documents and Settings to c:\Users I dont know the variables to remove all the 'My 's from the pictures, documents, etc but you can kiss 'My Computer' goodbye Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}] @="Computer" "LocalizedString"=hex(2):43,00,6f,00,6d,00,70,00,75,00,74,00,65,00,72,00,00,00
  8. Theirs an update on the blog about it WDS update revision follow - up If those comments dont make you split your sides with laughter, then you should read the guaranteed to be 100% impartial journalism here: More gnashing of teeth after Microsoft update brings PCs to a standstill (you can tell how impartial they are by the headline) and in 'related news': Windows update brings down TV newscast I love the register. they can take anything blow it way out of proportion and blame it on microsoft. They are 1 step away from reporting on batboys social life and oprahs weight.
  9. My guess would be that they might be copied at different stages of the install process for example: say $1 is copied first and you have a special win.ini you wanna use (just as an example) so you stored it in $1\WINDOWS\win.ini then more setup stuff happens and the win.ini file is extracted from the cab and overwrites your c:\WINDOWS\win.ini (or errors out -not sure which -this is all hypothetical) then $$ is processed but your win.ini file isnt in it so it doesn't get copied. end result = you don't get you modified file but the windows default file instead. but thats all just guessing. they might just be legacy variables leftover from an older version where they had some distinct difference.
  10. how many versions of Directx 9.0c do we really need? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en Somebody needs to either explain to me why the version # never changes or inform MS that it might be time to bump up to directx 9.1, 9.01, hell they could call it 'DirectX 9.01a November 2007 Professional Ultimate Edition' for all i care -as long as they increment the version #!! Im sorry but having 5 different versions of DirectX 9.0c doesn't make sense. Guy 1: <New PC Game> runs like crap! Guy 2: Do you have DirectX 9.0c? the Readme says you need it. Guy 1: Yeah didnt that come with SP2? Guy 2: No that was DirectX 9.0a -well they didnt call it 9.0a at the time, but thats what it was called when DirectX 9.0b came out. Guy 1: 9.0b? Guy 2: Yeah i never saw it either but i have seen DirectX 9.0c so assume there had to be a 9.0b Guy 1: How do i tell if i have the latest DirectX 9.0c? Guy 2: Download it, Install it & reboot. Its the only way to know for sure. Guy 1: Screw it. Im going to play Zelda instead.
  11. Its You!! Sorry, but your topic made me think of MAIN SCREEN TURN ON! now i have that stupid song stuck in my head. Just a shot in the dark but id guess that your PC isn't entering hibernate correctly. I'd check the bios to see what your power options are set to. Normally id try updating chipset drivers but vista usually has good drivers already included or available through WU but you might try that anyways. You could also check to see if your manufacturer has a newer BIOS.
  12. SO you wanna repair computers? Remember the most important rule: End users lie a lot more frequently than log files. Red flag phrases are 'for no reason', 'it just started doing this' if you hear any of these thing from your end user, its usually best to just tune them out and check the log files (if no log file available, you may have to revert to listening) The End user doesn't need a reason to lie. They just do it not to be confused with the first rule <!-- ok attempting to be funny mode off --> I'd look at COMPTIAs A+ / N+ certifications http://certification.comptia.org/ now before somebody come in here bashing comptia read the rest of what i have to say and A+ certification will cost you $163.00 and if your already pretty knowledgable, you may not learn much but by the time your cert, you'll have better understanding of the field and whether you want to do that kinda thing everyday or find out if you want to go a slightly different direction. (ex: N+, CCNA) first question is a tough one because the best way is to 'learn by doing' just dive in (fix your PC, if its not broken, update it, tweak it, modify it) and remember Google is your friend. and secondly, Computer repair shops these days are designed that way the more 'served' the customer feels, the more they are willing to pay for it. For some reason the majority of people would rather pay someone money then have to learn something by listening (even technician talks to them in 'plain english') Well yes and no. There are special tools 'hidden' in windows but they are too numerous to list, and those are just the ones that ship with windows there are thousands of 3rd party tools/utilities I have a few A+/MCSE/CCNA/CISSP books lying around my office that I loan out to students but i'm probably a long drive from you -I'd check with the IT dept / CIS teacher at your local school / college and see if they might loan you one of their old ones. The answer to your first question is they are just normal people that put up with the academic process long enough to get a piece of paper that says they know what they are doing. Whether they actually do know what they are doing should be evaluated on an individual basis though because I've met people that have spent more time hanging diplomas than actually working on PCs that I wouldn't let touch any of my PCs. Those people wanted to get into a IT job for totally different reasons than I did. I got into an IT career because I wanted to find out how computers work and how to fix them when they don't. So I guess im still trying to figure out the answer to why people find these things mysterious because in my opinion they really aren't that mysterious.
  13. Oh i forgot to add, goshs way is probably the best way to go if possible. I just chipped in my 2 cents in case that doesnt work
  14. We use this ISO all the time to reset/blank the local admin password http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html but i will point out 2 things, the first of which is on that page and #2 if you change the password of a non admin account, it will ask if you want to add that user to the administrators group -dont do it itll corrupt the account everytime weve tried it
  15. no experience with either of these but they might be worth a shot http://www.mailingcheck.com/ http://www.efextra.com/filtertest.asp
  16. if the server supports IMAP connections you can change your account to IMAP, create a folder inside inbox, drag them all there and the server will make a copy of them then just move them from there to the inbox. ive done it before to move to another server if yahoo doesnt support imap find out if yahoo has an 'import from' feature from a service that does then upload them there and make yahoo import them
  17. wow sorry to hear that. cant you just call the uninstall string from a login script or something? found another thread on it: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost....96&SiteID=1 I saw that in 'Optional Updates' on a new XP box today and chuckled and thought 'that wont be there for long' but i was just being cynical. When will MS stop shooting themselves in the foot? Whats next, an update to Windows DNS that 'accidentally' redirects all traffic from *.google.com and *.yahoo.com to *.live.com
  18. *Quad cores exist only in a parallel universe where people have the 1000$ to drop on a CPU Unfortunatly, even in that universe windows explorer still locks up and eats all 100% of all 8 cores sorry nmX.Memnoch that asterisk with no corresponding footnote was bugging me
  19. press start and type msconfig and hit enter click the boot tab Find the one that says Current OS and click the other one(s) and then click delete reboot after system reboots you might see a popup windows that says you used a diagnostic utility to boot windows if you see that just check 'do not show me this again' checkbox and hit ok
  20. Looks like they have the drivers for the M2NPV-VM which according to their site has the same audio as your board http://www.asus.co.nz/products.aspx?l1=3&a...amp;modelmenu=2 look in the audio category on this page http://support.asus.com/download/download....;model=M2NPV-VM
  21. I use this code to execute a .bat from the login script without displaying that prompt" Dim WSHShell, oEnv Set WSHShell=CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") set oEnv = WSHShell.Environment("PROCESS") oEnv("SEE_MASK_NOZONECHECKS") = 1 WSHShell.Run("nameoffile", 1, 1) set WSHShell=nothing oEnv.Remove("SEE_MASK_NOZONECHECKS") WScript.Quit might work for you too
  22. I LOVE USB drives. I call 'em LIFESAVERS though I have a 2 of these: http://www.caselogic.com/2_capacity_usb_dr...m?modelid=66125 a red on and a grey one and 4 of these http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Catalog(11...lash_Drive.aspx grey one hold holds 2 8GB ones These hold just about every XP patch, Office 2003 and 2007, office patches for both, some Slipstreamed ISOs, one is bootable with an XP password recovery linux the other has a USB bootable XP (but its messed up at the moment) red holds a 2GB and a 4GB the 4GB holds My Build Software (antivirus, adobe flash/reader, other school software and bat files) and the 2GB holds all my spyware/virus removal tools and any possibly tainted user backups (the 2GB sees all the bad files) the 8GB ones usually stay in the office because i cant make them bootable password protect them but the 2 and 4GB ones are password 'protected' and are always on my person or in the PC next to me
  23. Thats because Windows ME wasn't actually released. It was chased out of Redmond by Microsoft programmers carrying torches and pitchforks. From there it was copied and released directly to the warez scene. Anyone that claims to have Purchased a copy from retail is lying. Because honestly, who would admit to that?
  24. also this site shuld be helpfull for disabling/enabling things http://www.intelliadmin.com/Downloads.htm http://www.intelliadmin.com/CDRomDisabler_Free.exe (CD ROM disabler) http://www.intelliadmin.com/DisableUSB_Free.exe (USB Drive Disabler -USB mice/Keyboards/printers still work) http://www.intelliadmin.com/FloppyDisabler_Free.exe (Floppy Drive disabler) but nothing to kill windows audio -could prolly just disable the sound card in devman or stop/disable the windows audio service
