  1. yeah if you want to try it i would use this method: http://www.msfn.org/board/Tutorial-Clean-W...ed-t102095.html how you get your hands on the installation media is the part that we dont discuss here.
  2. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343#method5 http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers...p;uid=190778932 Its an IDT driver (not Sigmatel) and its for the Gateway One but works just fine on my Gateway FX400X on Vista x86. will prolly work for you too (looks like it has x64 drivers in the download)
  3. Ok i talked to a user today who somehow decided that they had a trojan horse. They of course called IT but unfortunatly, i was stretched pretty thin so i didnt get to it till near the end of the day (didnt sound like a legitimate and our distributed Mcafee AV said the system was clean) by the time i got there the user had locked up their office but they told me they had already 'taken care of it themselves'. fearing the worst, i asked how they took care of it. Step 1. Searched google for "trojan horse" (i guess i should be thankful they used Google and not MyWebSearch) Step 2. found 'some enigma thing' that said I had 2 trojan horses (i think this is the software in question hXXp://www.enigmasoftware.com/spyhunter_more_info.php) Step 3. installed said software -please dont ask why they have admin rights -it not my decision (though this will be added to the reasons why they shouldnt) Step 4. bought the software because it said it wouldnt remove it unless i paid for it -thankfully it was a personal creditcard (not my problem) I have to look at the machine tomorrow and im bringing the big guns (icesword, RKu, HijackThis, etc) and the system will of course be cleaned of all crap (including this "product") but my questions are: Has anyone here ever heard of this company? Is this software actually worse than the viruses that may or may not have existed in the first place? anyone wanna go talk to this user instead?
  4. I have 110 machines all running the same basic image. patches have of course been applied to all of the machines since they were built. the machines have all been frozen using deepfreeze when not patching so i cant account for this odd change. today i migrated the last room full of them onto AD they all applied 60-70 updates from wsus and are now 100% up to date. they are all subject to GPOs that automatically logs them on at boot 109 of them have no issues but 1 of them displays this screen for about a minute before processing the autologin information from the registry (s***ty pics courtesy of a Motorola SLVR) normally, machines on the domain without an autologon policy will display the Ctrl+Alt+Del to logon screen (a GPO that applies to the whole domain tells it to) but machines with the autologon policy bypass that screen entirely ill prolly just reimage this machine to make it the same as the rest but im curious if anyone has ever seen this type of behavior on XP?
  5. I prefer Vista over XP but around the office I never call it Vista i call it 'Windows XP Shiny Edition'
  6. is this another one of those purposely biased polls or just broken? i selected the bolded options and got: plus when you say compatibilities i think you mean capabilities. In my experience Vista will run anything XP can with very few exceptions.
  7. <-- Premium Sponsor and adblock user heres my take on it: using adblock = good bragging about using adblock on a community supported by ads/donations = bad taste
  8. AFAIK, the only options available that will do that are DeepFreeze or steadystate. steadystate is good stuff its kinda like a very basic version of Deepfreeze with a 'Group policys for dummies' interface as a bonus. for a small cafe setting, Steadystate is the best option. If you are going to scale up past 30 workstations deepfreeze has a few features that will help. the only other option that comes to mind would be using a linux+vmware+Xp type situation but unless youve got a linux guru hanging around, setting one up might be overkill.
  9. Really? do you have a link that confirms that? I'm not calling BS I would actually like to know -as I mentioned our software licensing guy keeps us as in the dark as he can about what we have available If you can provide a MS link about it i can include it when i request the newer CD with communicator on it (hopefully i can get one with SP1 integrated as well)
  10. i dont know if itll do throw gestures or not but this one will give you buttons to swap monitors http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/ also there is an attempt at the same type of functionality in the nvidia drivers PS: in vista with aero activated the buttons arent always visible
  11. great. now i have to talk to our software licensing guy -last time he mailed me our office 2007 because he didnt know what an ISO was. thanks for the assist. I knew there had to be a reason why it wasnt there.
  12. okstate has pretty complete coverage and a lot of info about it too http://it.okstate.edu/students/wireless.php
  13. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/FX101674041033.aspx I have a full install of 2007 Enterprise but communicator isnt in my start menu its not on the disk either Access.en-us Admin autorun.inf Catalog Enterprise.WW Excel.en-us Groove.en-us InfoPath.en-us Office.en-us Office64.en-us OneNote.en-us Outlook.en-us PowerPoint.en-us Proofing.en-us Publisher.en-us README.HTM Rosebud.en-us setup.exe Updates Word.en-us i even tried setup.exe /admin to see if it was deselected but didnt find it there either
  14. the problem is in http://www.personalvacationassistant.com/i...les/Page399.htm on line 117 <form action=--WEBBOT-SELF-- method=post> this tell the form to submit to --WEBBOT-SELF-- which is a variable used by Microsoft frontpage extensions to make a page post back to itself. it should be replaced on the webserver with other data if you have frontpage extentions enabled if you goto this URL http://www.personalvacationassistant.com:2...3/fp/index.html that should link directly to where you can enable frontpage extensions on your server. (only if your server admin allows it though) there could be additional issues with the form but making sure FP extensions are enabled would be the first step.
  15. ive had that happen on a few machines that have had a power failure sometime during the install process (i assume it was during the patching process at the end of install but i wasnt in the room when the power failed.) anyways, the problem sorta corrected itself because WSUS installed SP1 again the following night on all the machines so i would try just reinstalling SP1 and that should fix it.
  16. I used to run a bunch of sites but really i only maintain one of my own these days (and thats the one i didnt link) http://voicesinmyhead.net/ (nothing on the main site but lots of behind the scenes stuff is still there) http://hostduo.com/ (was gonna resell off of it but never did) -functions as my host for my friends sites -most complaints go to me first and then to the real host) http://distractionguild.com/ (a now defunct wow guild) My sons website (just a picture album but im not linking it cause itll get spam commented again and im too lazy to delete them) I swear i have others too but i musta deleted them outta WHM
  17. I wouldnt do that. even if you have a 'bundled' copy of nero 7.5 i can guarantee the license does not allow you to transfer it to everyone on the internet.
  18. I would say you shouldnt buy either. Nothing against Nero. Its good stuff but I use free software whenever possible. http://www.imgburn.com/ for data CDs http://www.burrrn.net/ for audio CDs http://www.daemon-tools.cc/ instead of Nero ImageDrive
  19. similiar gadget: http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/06/magstay...sing-abilities/
  20. 15.4 laptops typically max out at 1280x800 (maybe 1680x1050) i dont know why anyone would want a laptop with a 15.4 screen that ran at 1920x1200. anything less than 20ish inches at that resolution makes text difficult to read.
  21. 1. 'unsigned' theme support out of the box. (ideally this would be like the gallery for sidebar clutter) 2. logon screen and boot screen customization (ability to bundle with the theme would be nice too) 3. ability to modify flip3d/minimize/maximize effects (bundling with themes/online gallery would be a nice touch) 4. native ability to change shortcut arrow for all shortcuts and ability to disable either per shortcut or all 5. always display the largest icon available for every icon. icons should never be scaled up always scaled down. implementing a gallery for this would be awesome (image if you could search online icon libraries natively) 6. better dual monitor support (MS should just buy the company that makes ultramon and roll it into 7) 7. remove every single 'access denied' prompt and replace it with an escalation prompt (UAC-like for home users, Username/password for domain) 8. allow an option for the 'All programs" menu to pop out of the start frame without haing to revert to the win2k style menu 9. make webdav work like it did in XP (wait i take that back i would prefer that it work properly) 10. ok Microsoft, blue is your thing. I understand that. just because you enjoy parading around in baby blue everything doesn't mean everyone else does. the only thing that youve skinned in the last 10 years that doesnt look like the boys section of a Babies 'R' Us exploded all over it is WMP11. Aero was a step in the right direction but i still have to hack 100 freakin' .dlls to rid myself of all the **** baby blue. Awesome. like most 'give your idea' threads I respond to, I started off constructive and end up ranting like a lunatic by the end of the post. Im making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
  22. nah its dead ram. it was in a friend of mines pc when it was hit by a pretty good surge that burn almost everything in the system. he wanted me to test it in an old board to see if it was any good. it was not. which means the only thing inside the case that survived was the DVD burner.
  23. Taskbar Shuffle 2.2 - http://www.freewebs.com/nerdcave/taskbarshuffle.htm
  24. i noticed something funny in the firefox searchfield today when i was hunting for the uninstaller for IE7 when it doesnt show up in appwiz. i typed "uninstall " and this is what i got try it for yourself: http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en seriously, how bad does your free program have to suck in order for it to be listed not once, not twice but 3 times in the top 10 suggested search list? the fact that norton is at the top of the list made my day only thing in that list that I wouldnt want to uninstall is flash (though there are days i think the web works better without it), mcaffee (if its not an ent version), and vista (I could argue that no one truly uninstalls an OS)
  25. i dont think thats considered a shortcut. I think its a really odd use of the Start Button OEM Link looks like the original idea may have come from here but the method they use to add to the start menu should make it appear under the 'All Programs' popout menu at the top with the windows update, windows catalog, microsoft update and 'open office document' shortcuts appear.
