Subsitute for Terminal Services/ VPC/ Server acces
tarquel replied to Bad boy Warrior's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
@un4given1: well slap my rear and call me sally lol I don't know why I suggested it lol You're quite right of course. I forget that my stuff is "very well shielded" at work - and that running vnc isn't going to comprimised by anyone - as noone will ever reach it lol. Waiting for the county to set up a vpn myself - its taking ages but i guess the best things come to those who wait. Just make sure tho, that the user in question has a good, protected setup (AV/Firewall/Active Spyware Protection) at home as you dont want viruses and other nasty's/hackers creaping along the VPN connection to your server. Not having used a vpn connection myself yet, cant say what you can do with it yet, and I cant really go into specifics of how I will be controlling things from home - tho u can probably guess. I like the idea of tsweb through a vpn. un4given1 - is that a good way of doing things? (for me that is - good old vnc through the vpn is what they suggest lol). @Bad boy warrior: I imagine point 3 & 4 could be achieved via GP and/or access right permissions for the user you are going to set up for him. Regards, N. -
@Taggs: Niiice. Dont fancy throwing a few ones my way - although its taken years, I might (will lol) finally be able to get a exchange 2003 system up and running instead of our old NGFL eudora box (you don't even wanna go there lol).I wish we had the budget for such things - looks like Labour ar winning... they best give education the cash we desperately need All great stuff, tho I've never used a Sun system, but I'm sure I've heard/read that they are well handy. No network would be complete without one lol Go for the in-place CX600 upgrade - you know you want to Again, lovely stuff - i cud do with it if you do want to buy a brand new one lol You dont run the system's at a Uni by any chance (ps, you dont have to reply to that/or pm instead if ya like)? And if its a certain Uni near me, you dont have a network admin/engineer job going do ya? I need something a bit more challenging lol and paid better (which wouldn't be hard lol) plus working with other IT literate people would be heaven compared to - "oh, so whats this IP address thing mean then? Is that the boot thing or something?! .....*sighs* lol Regards, N. PS 2003 Std/Ent/Web/Datacenter are possible options you might like. 2003 is a dream - I never had Server 2000 and we went from NT 4 (bless it) to Server 2003 which I found pretty easy (even tho I was a tad nervous at the time lol A bit of a buzz for a second was nice). Cheers.

Certainly is (see my rig) Used it to play a few DVD's in the past, when the PS2 was playing up. S-Video > Scart lead and used the soundcard's output to the 7.1 speaker system. Not bad at all Just haven't bothered with the Remote Wonder remote controller - as I've got too many lol Regards and glad it worked out for you. N.

Cool... I knew that it was possible... If you have a /re-find the link, please post it @Rayza: I did try pointing it out in my earlier posts lol but never mind Quite true enough, but how many onboard chipset's support EAX3 and gaming sound features like that? not that there's probably *that* many games that have EAX3 but there we go - I cant afford them all lol It does make a difference when you use Steinberg & similar companies apps tho, as it does with my 7.1 speaker system. Of course, we're not all after audio editing etc., but games do great on a quality setup & soundcard lol Quite true - although with a Shuttle machine, I had to connect up a floppy drive to the floppy connector unfortunately. Lucky in a way we didn't get 20 of them in the end lol Regards, N.

Subsitute for Terminal Services/ VPC/ Server acces
tarquel replied to Bad boy Warrior's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I assume you need IIS installed also with that yes? Thought I'd add that two cents there. Also, its worth mentioning the alternative as tguy said - VNC - search google for UltraVNC (although any of them should do the trick). http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...ndpost&p=312447 This post that I made may give you a bit more info on it. You could then set up a restricted user - allowing/dis-allowing whatever you want then and the VNC connection will allow him/you to remotely connect to the server. Regards, N. -
Basic functions just stopped functioning
tarquel replied to BigDaddy's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
forgot to close the tag there eh? I thought there was both 2000 and 2000 Pro but never mind, after all, having a pro version without normal version seems odd lol Yep, I think that its Server 2000 and Advanced Server 2000 also now that you mention it. Cheers, N. -
RIS install. Need to uncheck "Reboot Automatically
tarquel replied to Skeeter6755's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Not yet lol I was thinking it would be the same process as it is in XP - must be a reg key you cud import at the end of the setup - if that cud be done via RIS or not I dunno, having not use RIS. I dont think there's a option for it in winnt.sif and sorry i dont know what the reg key is, but it may give you an idea what to search for If that made any sense lol Regards and welcome to MSFN. Windows Server Post Setup Security Updates
tarquel replied to lyledg's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Hi, welcome to MSFN. Haven't had this yet (is this a result of installing 2003 with SP1 slipstreamed already?) but it may be a requirement - tho i doubt it. Surely it is documented in the deployment pack of 2003 SP1 (deploy.chm) although they probably haven't updated the tools & manuals etc yet (well, haven't released them yet) although if they have, can someone post a link? I'm sure they'll be some setting you can set in a answer file to help unattended installs - which is probably the easiest way (that is if you use a answer file lol). Regards, N. -
Without more info, its gonna be hard to sort out I'd say. You "may" have to wipe it and start again - I dunno how much trouble it is, but thats the problem with NT 4 that although its was nice for its day, its too old to get the proper support you need from MS. Like Taggs says that if the data is corrupt and there's no MS fix for it (have you looked up the error on the MS KB site?) then the "start again" option may be quicker than trying to fix it (unfortunately). Any more info, let us know and as I didn't say it before, Welcome to MSFN P.S. Is it powerful enough to run Windows XP on it yet? If the software you use is compatible and you can justify the costs of it, it may be worth the upgrade, though you would need the Professional version most likely and it'd be better to get the full version as opposed to the "update" version (does that version even do a in-place update in NT 4 anyone?). Regards, N.

What Proliant do ya have? I ask only because I have ML350 G3's at work. Am very happy with them, like I am with all HP stuff generally - never gives me trouble. Interesting to know about the new version of the support pack tho. I installed the SP1 without problems - that I'm aware of. Is it the HP management tools and stuff that have issues with it? (need I even ask? lol) Regards, N.

Hi there. Sypathise with you, coz like all of us, I hate these type of situations too. First off, updating the BIOS is a must if you're having a problem. You may find that if there is a bios update, it may cure the problem as I had all sorts of hell with one motherboard and memory - but once I updated the bios, windows installed fine and touch wood, the machine is working fine in one of the classrooms. Certainly do it sooner than later, or you'll be kicking yourself if it does work lol If that doesn't cure it, and althought its been mentioned already, you should test the memory too using the above program memtest86 - is handy to see what the output is. Also, try resetting the bios (yep, again) and making sure that the timings of the RAM are relaxed as the RAM appears to be a stock/value PC3200 from Corsair (as you haven't shown the timings of it) and as suggested, reseat it physically too. Regarding the PSU, what watt rating is that? I only use Antec stuff generally in making up PC's as they never let me down and are good system's - both the cases and PSU's. I doubt its a PSU problem, unless it aint feeding the system enough power of course. An underpowered machine is a unstable machine as we all know You may have a duff one tho so i guess its worth a change to see. Looks like a nice setup - the mag I get has been mentioning (and half mocking) Fatal1ty and his branded stuff - and some of it looks nice. You didn't mention what "some" of the messages you've been having are? Got any to hand? um... I hate morning's so I'm fully 100% or I'd have more stuff to say but let us know how you get on and I hope the motherboard's firmware update is easy. Just make sure that floppy disk hasn't got any bad sectors on it Lastly (for now) - when you say "different copy of Windows" you're refering to a different CD media or different OS? In any case of those cases, it rules out the CD but like mentioned doesn't rule out the drive. I hate DVD-ROM drives - loads of them (both new and old) have given me hell when installing windows so its worth a try. Just try a good quality CD-ROM drive for now or lol if you don't have any, a decent working CD-RW drive is worth a try too Hope this rambling helps you a bit and if no-one has said it already, welcome to MSFN! Regards, N.
-
You could have the old drive in the machine to get the work off - surely it will appear in windows as drive D or whatever. Just make sure that you set it to boot off the new/primary hard drive in the BIOS. Not 100% on this if you get "unknown partition" tho - although I think thats been corrected ...er..right? Probably no good to ya but I am a little tired this morning hehe Regards, N.

Hi and welcome to MSFN ummm.....not sure what you mean here. Whats BDD? I understand that not every company has the finances to throw money at training but its a bit much to ask this of you isn't it? I mean, are we talking "starting from scratch" here or what? It's also a bit much to get a full, detailed, explaination on everything you need to do. I can't say I fully understand what you are wanting - you need to be a bit more descriptive too I'm afraid. Like what server OS? What deployment software? What hardware are you using? etc. and if this is a server question, it may have been easier to post this under a different section but never mind Could you give us some more details on what you have and what you want for any of us to "try" and help? (not saying we will be able to that is - it depends what you're ask of us) Really, they need to send you on training for what they want/expect you to do so you can understand how to do it and what you need in order "to" do it Regards, N.

I agree with azagahl. I don't know of any "RAMdisk" software solutions and I highly doubt of what good they would be really - performance or otherwise. Just follow azagahl's suggestions is your best bet, although if you do try out nlite, be careful with what services your removing otherwise I could make windows (and you) not very happy Be sure to post in the nlite section of the MSFN forums tho for nlite related things. I don't know if your aware that certain motherboards allow you to boot from a USB Flash drive. Maybe a 1GB/2GB version with a minimal install of 98SE could be a possible solution, although I've never tried it but its bound to be better than any software you could find. Admitedly, you're not gonna get that much room to play with so is it really worth it tho? I imagine Windows would boot extremely quickly tho lol and I'd love to see that Also, I've heard of motherboards that have SD / Compact Flash sockets on them directly which you could do the same sort of thing. Alot of motherboars have brackets for a card reader bay, so its quite possible you could one of those too, although I doubt the system would know to boot from a card reader, etc. - only dedicated socket ones perhaps but it's one to research. Let us know if you find anything please and also tell us more info & how its coming along as I'm sure others will be interested. Regards & good luck, N.

Welcome to MSFN. Not that I've used nlite, but isn't there a section on here for nlite (Member Contributed section I think), you should post in there i think. If the above quote is refering to unattended installation then there is plenty of info on the forum about it. Please use the search facility. winnt.sif is the file you'll want to research, unless nlite has a way of doing it itself. Take a look at the link at the top of the page (Unattended CD/DVD Guide) Regards, N.

Exactly.. and HyperHacker - you know that you can call MS for free if you have a problem installing a SP? Not that I've called them - have never had a problem (except with my own once lol) SP is good...period! Regards, N.
-
Odd... just to clarify - are you running XP SP2? You should have DirectX 9.0c in dxdiag if so. There maybe a switch you can use to "reinstall all components" of DirectX when you reinstall it from the downloaded install you have. Make sure you have downloaded the full redist package of 9.0c tho, not any other version or a express style one. Let us know if that makes any difference. Regards, N. PS Welcome to MSFN btw

Agreed. I know a long time back there was a thing called WAH (Work At Home) rights license but at the time, and still continually up to now, we never have had the money to do it. In truth, its hard in our county as we have very limited resources and there's only usually 1 technical member of staff in each high/secondary school. We get our licenses (mainly) through the county MS vol (Select) license but I have tried to get some sense out of them - which is hard at the best of times - and they have given me zero feedback on this when I asked many months ago. I'm not sure which Select license it is precisely, but I "think" it is Select Academic or some Select govermental vol license. If anyone in the UK knows a bit more, please PM me as all of us techies in the county would like to know about this. I'm sure it wont be free though lol nor would we be giving out our vol key's either lol Regards, N.

Never done it myself but I believe you can premote a BDC to a PDC but I'm not sure the process to do it. Also don't know whether the PDC has to be working and on to do it (can someone give us a hand here?) Ummm....isn't it just enabling a screen saver and ticking the password protect checkbox? Regards, N.

er..... none of this actually matters because we've (I've lol) kinda taken it for granted that you are using a server OS.... when I dont think you are lol but anyway... 1) The server - usually called a DC (Domain Controller) - holds the Usernames & passwords (and more) in a role called a AD (Active Directory). The client machines are attached to the domain (which the DC has been setup to create) and then users can log on to the domain, not the local computer(s). Primarily, this is an advantage as then it can be set up so the users save work to the server, using shares, home directories & profiles - handy in that of course, all work is saved in the same place. Also, it makes more sense from a management point of view in that only the administrator (especially at home/small offices) there is no need for anyone else to be logining on to the local machines - thus saving hassles with setting up user accounts on each machine. Thats all I'm gonna say - especially as this isn't what you started the topic about. 2) You wouldnt need more than one for this so no point going into it lol 3) Has to be either "NT 4 Server" / "Server 2000" / "Server 2003" for a DC / "proper" server system. 4) It depends what you want it for, but as you dont have it, I think the cost wont justify the usage. Try to be more clear when stating server - tho I'm sorry I didn't think to ask sooner lol Regards, N.

Basic functions just stopped functioning
tarquel replied to BigDaddy's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
small question but isnt there: - 2000 - 2000 Server - 2000 Professional - 2000 Professional Server? Or am i confused because I haven't really used any of them? lol BigDaddy: Adaware isn't a cure all - its good, but in the past, no single product has got rid of all spyware on certain machines I've fixed thats all Regards, N. -
I use a process at work similar to [b]bookie[/b]s which is a collection of large batch file(s). Parts of it are manually clicked, but its sooooooo much faster than finding the files, loading them, etc. As we are (well...I am) trying to make the move slowly but surely to having all machines running XP, its kinda making my batch files seem like a a waste of time lol I plan to work on them some more when i get back to work in just under two weeks but I'm not 100% sure that I'll have any time spare to work on them. [b]@Rexx72:[/b] How have you progressed in things since your last post? It'd be handy to hear your thoughts again. Your script for repartitioning, etc was really good and something I have ben meaning to do, but as always, no time or better, more urgent stuff was priority lol Regards, N.
-
er....right. This is a bit confusing - for one, if you are installing Windows XP, then you should be posting this in the appropriate section of the forum, even if you're making a dual-boot setup (ME & XP) not that I've bothered with this so can't really help with that side of things. Is this a old pc or something as it seems to be all over the place? with things not working and so on. What I recommend is using a boot disk by your "hard drive" manufacturer that can analyze the hd - fix any problems it finds (yes, they can fix "some" problems) - even low level format it (only if there isn't any information you want on the hard drive of course) and with a tool like Maxtor's MaxBlast book disk, you can even make and setup multiple partitions so that if you are going to install multiple OS's by partition, you have the partitions all setup (or even if you just want a seperate data partition, its another handy way to do it). There's plenty of info on dual boot/multi-booting OS's if you search the forum for it. Let us know how that goes for you and give us a bit more feedback on the situation please Regards, N.
-
Dunno if this will help at all as it seems like you've done alot to get it sorted but..... You been to windows update and got all the updates? (after installing A/V & Spyware protection) Regards, N.

Hi Can't quite work out whether you've managed to boot to a dos prompt or not properly lol so Ok, give this a blast... Visit the following site for a Windows ME boot disk - try the OEM one first which should do the trick - and download that and create a Win ME Floppy Boot Disk: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm You can download the .dll in question from here (which you need to unzip to get the file) and then see if it will fit on the disk you created above. http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?shlwapi Once done, put in the target machine and (making sure that the floppy drive is selected as the first bootable device in your bios settings) boot the disk. [You can skip any enable CD support type-option as we dont need that right now but choose default options if you dont know whats going on - I can't remember the exact options having not used a boot disk like this for quite a while lol] After the boot processed has finished, if it doesn't finish on >A:, you need to type: A: [Enter] <--- the button [Enter] , NOT type that in hehe You should also be able to type: C: [Enter] Type DIR [Enter] to confirm that this is your Windows partition i.e. you'll see a list of directories and a few files too, etc that you should recognise (Program Files, Windows, etc.). Right, providing you have got the right drive and the right partition that is the Windows partition is C and you have the shlwapi.dll file on this floppy boot disk, follow this: A: [Enter] COPY shlwapi.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM [Enter] (Dont worry about caps/no caps - its not case sensitive) If it says: 1 File Copied without a error then you should be good to go and if it asks you to replace the file, then say yes [Y] as the file is probably corrupted - thus the error. If you get a error message with invalid location or something similar, check that the Windows folder is called WINDOWS and not something else - yes, I've seen them be named differently on purpose a long time ago (to supposedly avoid viruses infecting windows hehe or because of other reasons - preference etc) - and change the above CODE statement appropriately to reflect where windows is installed too. Once done, try a restart and see what happens. Let us know how that goes either way. Regards, N.
