  1. ...furthermore, are both laptops on the domain and setup the same i.e. have the same config's, user/passwords, etc.? Does one laptop have a fixed IP addy and one has DHCP-assigned IP? Is the LAN/WiFi card switching off after being idle? - on the lines of the rather annoying setting "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" setting in the driver properties Just following on from sy89 harka13 - Please reply if you/we solve it so others can benefit too Regards, Nath
  2. @gamehead200: U using one of your unattended/custom CD's? If so, try your original copy of XP - maybe the laptop is fussy booting from a cd-r/rw (seen it before before someone flames me lol ) Regards, N.
  3. You failed to mention "what" you are using in order to back up XP... i.e. What program are you using?Try to give us as much info as to what you are doing and what you are using too. Also, are you using DVD-R or DVD-RW? Have you tried both types? have you tried using a + type instead of a - type? If your refering to creating shortcuts on the Quick Launch toolbar on your taskbar, then you can simply browse to: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch (replacing <username> with your username lol) and add or remove shortcuts there easily. You can even add folders to there and split the shortcuts up if you prefer. It's simple enough though just to drag any file or shortcut onto the Quick Launch area (next to Start button in most cases) and position the arrow between the icons already there - you'll see a black line appear. Release the mouse button and a shortcut should be created there - if you slip and highlight one of the icons, the icon's program you highlighted will run instead hehe There's no need to unlock the taskbar first. Regards, Nath
  4. Hi all @Nilfred: Firstly, it works with English version I've been playing with a few different methods myself, and in order to install the lot with the reg tweaks, the only thing so far i could come up with is wrapping the finished acrobatreader.exe with IExpress and using a post install command of: regedit -s ar701.reg which worked well. If anyone wants the finished installer, you can get it from my site *here*. Note: this installer gives a progress bar on the extraction process, creates a log - C:\ar701.log and has the registry entries mentioned in the first post - inc tweaks. The only snag with this process is that the Add/Remove Programs entry only displays Adobe Reader 7.0 (with no indication of an update) but its not too much off a problem right? Regards, Nath.
  5. Server 2003 all the way - the Standard version will suit most (look at the Microsoft website for the differences in versions of 2003) and its stable, looks and feels good, and is so easy to configure (that a blind rabid monkey could set up a DC with ease ), performs multiple tasks efficiently (dependant on amount of load on the server etc)..... ...in all - well done MS lol Linux maybe for webserving - plus sql db - and basic file serving needs, but I prefer 2003 for anything else. Netware - ......well..... still have a netware 4 server dying here lol trying to remove its usefulness i.e. get the work/modules off it so it can be wiped and/or scrapped. Regards, Nath.
  6. PS note - prev post was before the thread had been moved. Cant seem to edit my stuff out of it now :S Regards, N.
  7. well how about posting to the correct board first of all. There is plenty of info on different routers - try searching google and failing that, try searching the forum - in particular, the hardware section. No offense meant by the way and welcome to msfn N.
  8. hehe because simply putting /S is not good enough (no offense but haven't you read the previous posts?). killing the tasks it doesnt post-install can be irritating when the solution you have doesn't allow for the correct time afterwards, work everytime, etc. Repacking took me all of 10 mins. This one was a doddle - thankfully. Less to go wrong with a decent repack Regards, Nath.
  9. Don't use the Pro version so can't say for sure, but from what I've seen on here - it does the same thing at the end when silently installed. The non-pro version is best solved by repacking (or by using my repacked version found *here*) but as i dont have the pro version, i cant say for sure - but i'm sure its the same for the pro version. Regards, N.
  10. Read the forum rules please. Posting the same question in the same day no less!! Please be more patient. Regards, N.
  11. I dunno 'bout always lol but thanks let me know any changes, suggestions, etc. Offtopic: I knew u'd like it lol notice the partitions r in FAT32 - unsure about formatting or converting coz theres a hidden partition on the drive (recovery partition) but OS isn't too cluttered : ...... Regards, N.
  12. Can a admin change the topic title to something like "ad-aware SE professioal 1.05" as its a bit misleading and theres plenty of topics already - even tho they cover the same topics. Regards, N.
  13. there is nothing customised about it, only repacked with a different installer and that it wont do the irritating things of the normal installer thats all. Just use it with /silent and away you go, tho like i said, I have only just made it so haven't tried it with a cmdlines/etc type install. I could probably make one that doesn't need the silent switch, but at least you have the option this way regards, N.
  14. just a quick reply here... hows this for you: *** EDIT: Visit *this* post where you can log on to my site and get a ready made file to use *** Using the packaged version, in order to silent install, use /SILENT and it will show progress bar while installing and create the icons for you - it ont open, try and update or show the help file at the end of the install NOTE: I haven't fully tested it, so be careful with it. Its probably best to uninstall the version you have installed first and then install this, as it may not detect a previous version. I works smoothly on XP SP2 and I promise that there is no spyware, viruses or anything else in the package. All the files within the package are from the original 1.06 package Please PM or post with comments, suggestions and whether it works for unattended use (XP UA) and on other OS's. Regards and if anything feels I should start a new topic for it, please say and I shall do so Regards and enjoy, Nath
  15. @zaskar01: isn't there something in the sysprep.inf answer file that is like the "run once" aspect of a unattended xp install u could use? So long as you are NOT charging the customer any extra for installing AVG on the machine you are selling them AND the customer is a home user, then I'm sure it is fine regards, N.
  16. I think raza was refering to the topic i.e. wants to know how he/she can test Microsoft Update... I think its by invitation only - there may be an option to sign up but I'm not sure - anyone know? Regards, N.
  17. I got a few (sorry)... PC = RA3 PS2/3 = FF XII GC = Resident Evil 4 (I know it's out but I haven't bought it yet so looking forward to it) And hopefully a new SSX if and when they make another.
  18. [grrrr just lost the reply i had been writing lol so excuse this messy reply] I agree there - I'm known to be a tad paranoid but usually, there's reason behind my paranoia. I was awaiting such a comment from someone Whether it's freeware or not, isn't the point (although your'e quite right about open source programs - I'm sure theres no problem there). If you modify the installer of a program, then surely its just the same as modifying the contents of a installer correct? Regarding "hacking" - this is a bit of a general term really, but if you are refering to altering the contents of a package, then I agree - but some packages do do this, and - although they are not for any illegal reasons - it may not be proper to offer such packages. Also, try not to abbreviate terms that others may not know. Call me thick (yes, you may ) but whats DMCA? Please could some of the "older" members of the forum comment on this (no offense) to help me/us all clarify the legality of modified packages? (I know this is a bit vaugue but I think its useful for users new to modifying apps to know what they should and shouldn't do) *** EDIT: Just to show I'm not a complete a** here's one of the packages: - Firefox 1.0.4 Automated Install / Update - (only tested on XP SP2 so far - and dont worry if your icons start blinking lol but it works fine and contains no spyware or nasties I promise) [Feel free to comment on the package if ya like via PM] *** Regards, Nath.
  19. I agree there - i'd never charge for a modified package (unless allowed by the company of the software in question naturally). But isn't the modification of the installer classed as modifying the software tho? Cheers, N.
  20. Hi all I'm just wondering after seeing alot of links to modified version of programs (modified in order to install it something silently mainly) whether its legal to actually do this. Take SpywareBlaster 3.x for example... They don't provide a option to install it silently, so we all have to modify the package in order to do this. Of course, doing it for our own use is still modifying it (which I'm sure they wouldn't approve of but aren't overally bothered about) but when people distribute it i.e. a link to their personal site/host etc, isn't this kind of illegal? I've made a few of these modified packages for easy-of-use in the field and at work, but isn't this kid of wrong? Please don't flame me for this one, but I just thought I'd bring it up for a discussion on it. I'd love to provide a link to some of my modified creations i.e. Firefox 1.0.4, SpywareBlaster 3.4, Sun Java RE, etc. but I'm a bit worried about companies knocking on my "virtual" door saying "ummm.....you do know that you shouldn't have done that?" etc. Whats the word people? Regards, N.
  21. ...and most likely, you wouldn't want to as they probably contain elements of the virus/spyware, which would be brought back onto the system if you were to recover them. Disabling System Restore (as you probably have done) deletes all the restore points. Regards, N.
  22. also Qashlan's suggestion most likely will work, I imagine that there is a quciker, simpler way. The virus/spyware has probably altered some registry settings.... Can you answer these questions for us?: - Are you using XP Home or Professional? Do you have the latest Service Pack installed (SP2)? - Do you have anti-spyware software running? (as in MS AntiSpyware) and have other scanners installed also? i.e. Spybot, Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster [just for infomation in case you are wondering why I ask] - Have you been into Safe Mode to see whether you get the same problem happening? [in safe mode, try both the normal user account you use - and also look at the Administrator user] Be mindful that although the above Repair option may indeed fix it, it may cause you more problems as it imports/uses the existing registry i believe and may end up not solving anything and may cause other things not to work. Regards, N.
  23. he's already tried the other hard drives in thr system - please read all the posts. Envoi - mobo change i think mate - i doubt its the graphics card IMO, but stranger things have happened. Regards, N.
  24. yep.... I'd say either do it after the installation or use: [UserData] ComputerName=* which will give the computer a random name, based on the "Organisation" name. Regards, N.
  25. @genex: I agree that do to all fully does take a looong looong time.... I use both method's: - Ghosting [at work] when it comes to mutliple PC's (of the same model) is very VERY useful, and is useful too as a backup to a working system @ home. - Unattended/custom XP CD(s) is mostly likely the best way when you aren't setting up multiple PC's. What you could try is a basic unattended CD that automatically installs XP, with all the hotfixes and stuff included - and then have a script that you can start from ...say a USB HDD or large USB Flash device, which then installs things like Acrobat Reader, QuickTime, etc. silently/automated. You could customise the script appropriately to log the output and even have user choices too Thats kinda what I do, not having the time for fuly getting into fully unattended "everything" XP install's Regards, N.
