  1. If you read the forum rules, you might notice it asks you to search first, ask questions later....Of course, people dont follow this all the time as it is easier to post than get a good search result, but thats not the point We all cant be here serving up info all the time lol Also, take into consideration that it wasnt vitally important, need-to-know info that second-type of post i.e. it wasn't highly important compared to someone's server going down and they need advice etc, which of course would be more important lol And, everyone isn't on at the same time of day to you remember. This would probably apply to any worldwide forum so keep it in mind. PS I'm sure you would find most of the info on what you asked on the MS website somewhere - maybe the technet area - regarding the features you mentioned. Have a nice day, N.
  2. I find that a little irritating too so wouldnt mind an answer on it. Also, is there a GP setting somewhere to flip it (for domain users)? Regards, N.
  3. hehe
  4. hehe I know - its odd, but its true. AV - use one product ASW - use 3-4 lol Regards, N. PS You may have a clean one but its still best to check first.
  5. Did you choose "No forwarding" when you got to that bit of the Configuration Wizard for setting up DNS? I can't remember it exactly - tho I shall be doing it soon Regards, N.
  6. Individually, anti-spyware programs wont "get" all of the spyware. In many cases, you need to run (and update the definitions of) the following: - Spybot - Search & Destroy - Ad-aware SE Personal (which you have) - Microsoft Antispyware Also, you may need to use CWShredder - if it crashes when you run the Fix, then you know you have spyware as the spyware causes it to crash cleverly lol For protection, in addition to Spybot [immunize] & MS Antispyware, SpywareBlaster is the best at blocking the infections before they do anything. Once you have done that lot, then you should be clear of spyware lol and can pretty much say there's no spyware on the system Regards, Nath
  7. Just a stab in the dark but... if your NIC is 1000M only, then you have made sure that you are connecting it to a 10/100/1000M (or 100/1000M or 1000M only) switch port right? Connecting it to a 10/100M wont work properly/at all tho if its 1000M only ...er...right guys? Also, as I havent got any 1000M connections, is there a limit to the CAT5e cable when using 1000M speed? Just a few random things out of my head Regards, N.
  8. Is this kiosk attached to the internet at all? Have you got proper, up-to-date AV & Antispyware software running? Could something nasty have crept into it by any chance? Is it fully updated with all hotfixes etc installed? Visit to Windows Update if not. I loved NT 4 (*sighs*) - It worked well for me Regards, N
  9. At least with MS, they will sort it after the event at least, where some companies dont bother lol Regards, N.
  10. I believe 2003 server has a proxying service, tho I have never needed to look into this myself - and probably wont need to either lol But good luck lol Nath.
  11. Can you clarify what you mean in those two comments? If you have a 200x server running (not as a workstation heh) then you have a server, of course, you may not have it set up as a domain I am assuming. Try and tell us a bit more of what you mean but....(I'm guessing now)... If you changed the Administrator account username to Tom or whatever, then you aren't gonna be able to see \\mojca as your credentials dont match. If you were to login to the remote machine as \\MOJCA\Tom then you should be able to carry on as you were. Creating a domain situation makes it alot easier I'd say, though parhaps not if you aren't used to using domains and the settings that go hand-in-hand with them. Regards, Nath
  12. I, also, use the "folder redirection" on certain user groups on a GPO they have, along with preventing C viewing & access, but it seems to be working ok. Even tho its using the local profile as a cache (for other aspects), it doesn't keep the work stored locally and the default (in most programs) points to the home dir which is their network drive - H in this case - it works great. I might be able to help more in two weeks when I should be back at work and can help shed a bit more light on things (my memory of the settings etc aint *that* good lol) Regards, N.
  13. Haven't used the "new" version of it yet so I dont know whats what lol but here's a link to both the old and new version : old = http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en new = http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en I'd hang on to the installer but remove all traces of the old version from whatever pc's you might have it on, and stick the new version on it Regards, N.
  14. Right, then try these: regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (from the command prompt) and have a look at the info here: http://www.theeldergeek.com/delete_pic_and_fax_viewer.htm (the second part of that is on about restoring Picture and Fax Viewer functionality) Please post back if it works so others know Regards, N.
  15. hehe At least you got it eh? No big deal ...but now they know where you live lol Regards, N.
  16. I just lost the post I was writing.... try: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...tools.list.html They may have chinese versions or language sites to help you remove the listed trojans. If you can, try to protect the removal tool(s) by having them on a read-only media/device (to prevent the trojan/virus from tampering with them). You may also need to go into Safe Mode first. Good luck. N.
  17. Just wanted to bump this with an additional question.... Anyone know of a way to backup the installed game? (to a big archive or something with a reg file of all the installed reg entries) The reason is that I am quite likely to freshly install XP every now and then - dont we all? lol - and although the install process is fairly annoying, the updating currently took me 2.5-ish hrs!!! and thats with a 2M DSL connection (unsure why it took so long to be honest but still) Has anyone tried this and can anyone suggest anything? I dont want to fiddle with this, just in case I mess something up and have to do the same install and update process i did the other day all over again lol Regards, N. PS Off to play it in 5 mins - tarquel is nick and I'm in the world Lakshmi
  18. having no firewall is probably the reason. You haven't mentioned your setup i.e. - do you have a router? is it firewall capable and is that enabled? - Do you have a static IP from your ISP? Is it at all possible that you've been on "naughty" sites which may have logged that IP... you can guess the rest ...there's more I'm sure but my brain is starting to hurt a bit now lol Make sure that you dont have any physical LAN/Internet connections when install the OS. Also, if you can get a stable happy system work, make a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD or slipstreamed 2000 SP4 CD and get the firewall & AV software on it (and updated where possible) BEFORE you attach any lan/internet connections. Unless there some software that you are putting on after installing windows that has spyware in it - this is quite possible - then you shouldnt have any problems really. Pls someone post stuff I've missed (if I have) but I've been posting since this afternoon and I'm kinda drained lol Regards, N.
  19. Yikes lol Always, always install A/V software. AVG is a good choice (as mentioned above) You may have to do a fair bit to repair the damage (unless you're gonna just start over). Keep posting your progress back. Regards, Nath
  20. er.... please be more descriptive... What plugins are you talking about? Regards, N.
  21. instead.... take a look at this: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/tcpview.shtml and: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml That (i think) is sorta what youre after Regards, N.
  22. do you get anything instead of it now? when installing certain versions of microsoft office, it gets turned off if you install certain components of office - namely Microsoft Photo Editor. If you right-click a image that you want reassociated to it, you can follow this to (maybe) sort out the problem: - Right click image file - Choose [Open With] > [Choose Program...] - From the list that appears, find and highlight [Windows Picture and Fax Viewer] - Tick the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" And repeat the process for each image format you want associated to this viewer. Unless the program has vanished or become corrupt somehow, you should be good to go. Even if a virus made this happen, this should still cure it but make sure all traces of the virus has gone before repairing your system. Regards, N.
  23. re-sult glad to be of some help just be careful what you remove in nlite next time lol regards, N.
  24. [god I'm slow at posting lol] @ BigDaddy - Had a discussion with the-matrix in another topic somwhere. We all know that the server OS is stable, but XP can be just as stable if looked after properly. eval ver of 2003? Its a fine OS - I never had 2k at work but from NT > 2003 was pure bliss. MS - I salute you (in this case lol) Regards, N.
  25. @the-matrix: We've had this discussion before so I'm not gonna start again lol Remember it was just my opinion and also, its just your opinion too My XP machine has been running continually (no restarts or crashing) for 3-4 weeks. I only restart it when after a install/configuration change. So stability (yet again) isn't a reason. You're post is a little messy, but I'm just gonna say this for your own sake to be careful what your buying there. If he really is a MS partner, then he should know what he's selling you - he should know whether its 2003 SBS, Std, Ent or web. Regards, Nath.
