  1. ahhhhh....that makes more sense hehe if its a "proper" server and not a custom one, then it may be something software based - unless the HD thats been used appears ok but actually has faults on it, or the ram is some horrible cheap unbranded rubbish which has been added to the existing ram that came with the system. Actually, they would apply to any system so you could mention this... as I'd say that would be sure-reasons to cause that sort of problem. Has some peice of software been added/installed on it, that isnt comptible with 2003 (i imagine that this could be quite likely)? Has he installed the SP1 for Server 2003? Is the system overheating? Has he got some sort of diagnostic software or can he see if a fan isn't spinning? ....*pants*....outta breathe now hehe Try some of that and see how it goes. Regards, N
  2. I had the same problem (as i remember) although I put it down to the server being a NT4 server, but apparently not. I think there are things you have to do in order to accomplish it - certain services to enable, a certain type of user to enable/create and give certain permissions - sorry i cant give specifics here but it was last August/September so its a little unclear in my head, but it should be in the documentation. I couldnt get it to work because certain things just werent there in NT4, so i decided to not bother importing the passwords. There was some other options like reset them to a specific alphanumeric phrase or something like the first characters of the usernames or something. I choose that, even tho I had users this year come up to me saying that they haven't been able to log in since before september!!! If they dont come to me, then i dont know they cant get in hehe Anyhow, hope it helps... Regards, Nath.
  3. not that this is any help but i decided against migration in this way - for the difficulties you run into. It was a long time ago so i cant remember the precise way i did it, but i created a new domain and "imported" the users & shares across from the old NT DC/domain and moved all the user files & other resources over manually. Worked a treat and helped not import any problem settings from the old DC. Not much help but good luck with it. Trusts are odd ...by the way, you didnt choose the ...(not by my server now so forgive the lack of proper terminology)... new 2003 domain when setting it up to run as 2003 native mode (or whatever the mode is that doesnt see older server's like NT & 2000) as this might be not helping the situation. Just a thought... Regards, Nath.
  4. what exactly do u...does he... mean by that? is it a domain server or is it just a standalone machine? (really dont see why people use 2003 as a desktop OS - i bet the software aint legal in that case) i dont know how forgiving 2003 is on a custom built system - if it is indeed a custom built one. I've only ever used proper purose-built server machines for NT/server 200x There's a few questions to translate back hehe Regards, N.
  5. ...and what actually stops working when u get the blinking lights after 2 hours?
  6. no problem. you'll have to weigh it up, but it all depends on what intensive apps u mean. Even tho the highest Pentium M you can get is a 2.1G -ish, the performance it gives is great, and most apps will be happy enough with it. You could hang on for the new AMD mobile-based laptop's coming out - rivaling the centrino/intel stuff. They could be pretty good and being 64bit, you'll be able to have the 64bit ver of windows on them too All the best. Nath.
  7. hehe what a fool I wudn't call a shuttle a cube lol with or without a side window lol hmmmmm....wonder if the OS and software is legal lol ...*sighs*... N.
  8. unless u get a duff one (praying that you dont now lol) you wont be disappointed - just be careful with the platinumsecret thing (you'll see what i mean when you get the laptop) Regards and i hope you like it, Nath PS God - think i should work for acer lol or at least get some commision. Any Acer employee's looking at this??
  9. ...also, if the device isn't gonna be recognised by the operating system, when you put the cd/software in to install it, it doesnt work because the device/current driver is in use. Not a very good explanation but there's a few reasons why you should install the software/drivers first (as a rule, unless specifically told not to) and then plug the device in. In some cases, if you do plug in first and not install the software first, you 'can' (tho this is not generally the case) make it unable to install the software, even if you install the software afterwards, or uninstall the device (to help remove any trace that you put it in) - install the software - then plug it in. In a worst case senario, you might have to wipe xp and start again - i've seen it before. I've even seen some odd things happen when pl dont follow the instructions given - some customer had managed to install something as something completely different - of course, they denied all knowledge of it (as they do) but it was hell trying to get the thing installed. In short - the warning stickers are usually there for a reason hehe Regards, N. PS hope it made sense but it is 4.40am here
  10. hehe Wish I'd seen your post Gouki earlier before I started ranting on a different topic For those who want to read more, click the following: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...ndpost&p=310940 Regards, N.
  11. hehe I did get carried away with my post - I was only meaning its good for gaming too. I (after i put all the stuff on it i need - only had it a week heh) use it for browsing, chatting, gaming (as u know lol), office stuff, networking, development work, and web designing and so far, its made me happy every step of the way That seems a little pricey compared to what i got it for, but i'm not too good on exchange rates and so on. Also, I'm not too hot on what suppliers there are out there in portugal altho a friend of mine who runs a pc business is: www.epadvancedcomputers.com (tell him "Nathan from Wales sent you his way" and/or to anyone who gets in touch hehe) and I have a friend who lived out in portugal for while - tho it appears he's sleeping right now, or i'd ask him, but there we go. I had...er...a little fun with the smartcard stuff hehe but i'm not gonna go into detail here hehe after all, we're sort of off topic here... @Evil Homer: Sorry dude for digressing - got caught up in the moment of lovely laptop hehe I'm not a expert in laptop's - and unless there's some really rich ppl on the forum, i'd wager that not everyone has got more than one to to make a comparison with. I'd have to say it all depends what you want it for.... I wanted a decent performer (not just in games) coupled with a great battery life - as i see it, no point being mobile if the battery wont even last a trip to somewhere hehe I believe the P4/AMD Sempron/64's are 1.5-2 hr machines - powerful but not very mobile, while the centrino machines overall can be pretty powerful but have a lot higher battery life. Again, I'm not saying this is the case...period., but just the general feel of it all. Take that in mind - have a look at some good review sites and even look at some online shops that have customers review's on them to see what's hot, and whats not. Hope this helps, Many regards, Nath.
  12. I dont think i could properly answer this as..... I couldnt have just one dream machine lol It'd have to be: - a Intel Pentium/Xeon based machine for the hardcore working, digital video editing, etc etc - a AMD 64bit CPU based machine for the untimate gaming machine The spec's would be fairly obvious to most and as to each component...well....I wouldnt like to get myself all excited for nothing hehe - unless your gonna be buying it for me Regards, N.
  13. good - its a great machine. I pitted it against the recent new Dell laptop and altho i obviously couldnt match it regarding screen size and vga RAM, to get the same stuff as i got with this laptop wud have upped the cost by a 3rd or more of the price of this lol to have bluetooth, a smartcard reader and a card reader inside it was some great extra's. The widescreen is great for watching DVD's I had a operation recent so its so great to be able to lie here and have everything i need in front of me. ....i cud go on all night about it, but i wont. Gaming it performs admirably too - its better than my desktop rig lol The widescreen stretches some games tho - LOTR:TBFME & C&C:Generals-ZH get stretched, but its minimal so long as you up the resolution high enough. Cant say the same for all games but its great to have a few machines on it and have a main desktop pc for games. I got plenty to do on it besides gaming hehe The security features are good to.... Just buy it lol wireless thing *is* annoying - minimal for general browsing, but annoying for my uses. 5.5M its changed to now!!!!! Its running off AC too lol with all the settings boosted for max performance (Intel settings that is lol) Anyhow... Regards, Nath
  14. Just to add my two cents.... All the big leaders are as good as each other in terms og reliability - they have to be in order to compete (amongst other reasons of course). Myself, I've stuck with Hitachi in the recent years as....cant remember the model number off-hand...the type I saw reviewed amongst aload of other drives won on performance and cost - so i started buying them - and havent looked back since. I've yet to have one, but as mentioned along in various posts here, WD's Raptor drives are really speedy and stable, but at a higher cost p/gb than the rest. If you can afford to, get one of them - otherwise - check out a recent hard drive review-fest and pick a winner Regards, Nath.
  15. hehe Thanks - I know. A little annoyance that i've posted here - which doesnt affect ur general browsing of the internet, but is more annoying for other stuff. I still wholeheartedly recommend it hehe Regards, N.
  16. Hi all Just wondering if anyone knows why my built-in Intel Wireless/PRO 2915ABG card in my Acer TravelMate 8104WLMi laptop changes speed for no real reason. I've adjusted the settings to try and prevent it switching but to no avail. It has the latest drivers running from Acer's site - Intel's generic ones have the same driver version's too. Here are a few points to consider before replying: - The router is 2-3 meters away from the laptop and is in the same room - no walls in the way - The router is also set to 11g mode only (instead of mixed mode) too, to try and stop this - i may try the "Long Range Mixed 11b + 11g" to see if that helps but i doubt it - more router info below) - Signal strength is Excellent - Everything (except the next bulletpoint) appears to be running normal. Disabling and re-enabling doesnt make any difference. - I do get an odd download speed - its half of what i get on my desktop pc. 2M line @ 250/260KB/s - on the laptop i get about 100KB/s :S The router model: 3com OfficeConnect ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router (3CRWE754G72-A) running the latest firmware v1.29 (Jan 13 2005 14:18:55). I'm using "WPA-PSK (no server) - tkip" with a custom PSK. Anyone got any ideas or is it the waiting game for a better driver? Is this common? is it just one of the usual annoyances of a wireless connection? Regards, Nath.
  17. it's a sound choice Gouki *points at his own signature* I decent machine - get the extendeed 3 yr warranty with accidental damage if ur budget will allow it its better in the long run. I cant stand touchpads so i got a usb optical mouse which works great without any 3rd party drivers (remember there's no ps/2 port's on the model i have - unless u buy the EZ dock) Regards, N.
  18. dunno how much the import fee would be / if they send abroad, but i got one that works really well from www.play.com Can't remember the exact link but its easy to find Regards, N.
  19. just an additional two-cents question here had been using the command choice for 9x and 2003 and was a little annoyed that there's no choice command by default for xp... is there a timeout for the set /p command? i.e. if the user doesn't answer in x seconds then option x is chosen by default (like the choice command does) Many thanks, Nath.
  20. just a quick note regarding getting the .msi from the .exe package... If you use WinRAR, you can right-click on the .exe and extract it to a folder. The msi will be in that extracted folder. Regards, N.
  21. I hate it when the unknown system bug happens and you have to try literally everything again :S Here's a few quick things off the top of my head (sorry if i mention anything you've tried already but we've all forgotten things sometimes hehe): 1) Is your BIOS fireware up-to-date? 2) Are you using the latest drivers for your hardware? 3) Have you "tested" the HD's in your system with the manufacturers diag tool(s)? * 4) Are you overclocking your system? / Try running the system at default BIOS settings - appropriate to the default speeds of the components 5) ... [will add more as i think of them/get a chance to, or post again]... * I've heard of machines that experience "odd" problems and turn out to be a seemingly normal, working fine HD. When you install Windows, is it on the RAID HD's or are you using the RAID to store stuff, etc? [Just For information] Good luck Regards, N.
  22. agreed also... just make sure you get a decent PSU like a Antec (hehe no i aint plugging it here hehe) or as mentioned a Enermax with a good rating of at least 400/450 - dont get a cheap one as it wont help your system at all. And your dealer obviously doesnt know that much about power consumption so trusting his/her advice again regarding some things may be costly. Make sure you research what you're after before you buy - i know its a pain and more time-consuming - but you're more likely to get a happier system if you do. There are tons of good review sites on the internet and try and check more than one before you decide on anything. Good luck. Nath.
  23. I've no idea what country you're in, but if you're in the UK, this should do the drick for you: http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpresenta...t_id=GBYOA03OCQ I've had a brief look at one of the suggested US sellers on the gigabyte website: http://www.giga-byte.com/Peripherals/Where...ributor.htm#USA Try these if you're in the US. Regards, Nath.
  24. Can you give us any indication as to how you "f*cked up" you USB stick? It may be also worth posting the exact model number / product number too, as people may know of a solution for it Regards, N.
  25. sorry - maybe i was unclear in my PS but either way, you still didnt tell me anything i didnt know hehe the est release date of srv 2003 SP1 was all i meant. anyhow...back on topic.... @dhs13: I plan to set out what is needed myself soon enough - except that it'll be in about 2 weeks time. I plan on installing Srv 2003 and going to windows update in order to find out the current list. Then manually grabing them by searching for their associated KB numbers and getting the full downloads from there. Then I can remake the cd via XPC with these hotfixes installed, only if SP1 is coming out soon (thus the question about the release date of it), then this will be pointless as we can slipstream the service pack into the CD build and its all done. The way to continue all depends on if you urgently need it built now or not, or if u can hang on for a bit until I get to a position where i can help ya with the latest hotfix list for you - or SP1 gets released hehe Regards, Nath.
