  1. er....did i miss something? What was the solution? hehe Cheers and congrats Regards, N.
  2. Have you tried just burning it to a brand new normal cd-r? I've experienced problems with CD-RW's and installing XP but using CD-R media seems to work every time. Just a suggestion (and yes, I'm sure CD-RW's work for most ppl but hey, to find out, it costs next to nothing lol) Regards and let us know if it helps, N.
  3. just a thought but are you plugging it into the front usb port's on your pc? what happens when you plug the device into the back usb ports on the motherboard? I've seen this happen on some machines. Also, the screenshot indicates that the device is USB 2 but not the USB ports themselves btw Regards and welcome to MSFN. Nath.
  4. You have to share at least one folder (not hidden) usually in order for the machine to be viewable and browsable (just to let you know). This would definately apply to previous OS's also Regards, N.
  5. I agree with the others - "Incredimail sucks" - and IMHO, there are plenty of better mail clients if you dont like OE / Outlook. The only thing I can suggest is if you have bought it, is to call their technical support...if its the free version, get rid of it - its bound to contain some sort of spyware hehe If you really want to use it tho, try uninstalling it cmpletely again (if it asks to keep the user files or something similar, say no - you will probably have to remove every trace of it in order to use it again) and then try looking through the hard drive to find folders where its files may still be looking. - C:\Documents and settings\<yourusername>\Local Settings\Application Data\Incredimail - C:\Documents and settings\<yourusername>\Application Data\Incredimail - C:\Program Files\Incredimail are a few places to look. I couldn't tell you where to look in the registry but they may have more information on their website - I'm not gonna look on their site as no doubt, I'll get attacked by spyware lol Good luck. N.
  6. ok.... try the MS one [after install, update it and then run a full scan] and use SpywareBlaster (if you dont already). Also, keep all the antispyware programs updated too (i know its obvious but best mention it too) as spyware is more of a problem than anything else these days. Is XP Pro SP2 an upgrade on top of XP Home SP1 (just to gain a bit more info)? Try and tell us as much as you can regarding the issue you have too - althought seaching through folders is gonna be difficult to expand upon of course lol But info regarding is it a custom built install or is it from a company? ...etc Regards, N.
  7. right.... Talking about firmware here yes? Do you mean that the system has been working fine but recently this has started happening without any (obvious) changes to anything? If so, its likely to be - from the latest firmware that its installed - or you have spyware/virus on your system. Cool. Its odd that the PSP doesn't support WPA - being a new device on the scene - but maybe they'll issue a update for that Just have WEP (highest level you can) on then until WPA is avaliable for PSP. Regards, N.
  8. You may have Spyware/virus problems. Also, make sure you're fully up-to-date with Windows patches, hotfixes and updates. Try a system cleaning program like CCleaner and registry optimising programs like ERUNT. Keeping a system healthy is a big help towards a happy system Welcome to MSFN btw Regards, N.
  9. seems a little odd - not sure of this. hmmmm.... i wonder whether your router is renewing the IP address every 10 mins. Can you post the settting you have regarding DHCP on your router? If your just running a few machines at home and dont really understand IP addresses and so on fully, its best to have it on in the router if possible. If you look at the setting called Lease Time (names of sections and settings vary from brand to brand bear in mind) - it may be set on 10 minutes. You'll probably want to set it higher to a day or two - even forever maybe. Also, its pretty important to do the following if your router and wifi card allows, turn on some sort of wireless protection i.e. WEP / WPA (use WPA if you can as it is better than WEP) You never know if someone else may be in range of your network You may also need to update the router's firmware although you may want to try updating the wifi card's drivers first i.e. look up the manufacturers website and see if they have a newer version of the driver/software than you have installed. Let us know any more info and how you get on. Regards, N.
  10. Its by design I believe. I take it you haven't read this article then.... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;314058 specifically, the Restrictions and limitations of the Recovery Console section. It nicely documents the commands you can use too. If you need to do more than you are able to, i suggest using something like PEbuilder - http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ - most the plugins you wont need so follow the instructions to make up a basic cd you can use. be careful when altering stuff as you could render the install of XP completely useless Regards and let us know how u get on, Nath
  11. just of the top of my head... Are you running any sort of DCHP setup i.e. in a router or anything? Even if not, so long as your IP addresses on each pc are using the same network segment i.e.: IP - 192.168.0.x Netmask - 255.255.255.0 then it should work fine so long as you username/password is the same on both machines, and you have the correct permissions set (i know you say you have but still lol ) Both PC's are running XP right, and are they Home or Pro? Is "File and Printer Sharing" exception in the Windows XP Firewall (SP2) ticked on both? The properties of this partcular exception shouldn't need to be changed btw but just make sure its ticked providing the firewall is on and you aren't using a 3rd party firewall program i.e. ZoneAlarm, Norton Firewall/NIS, Mcafee, etc. Hope it helps - regards, Nath.
  12. Hi guys... I'm sure there has been plenty of topics and posts on activation with XP - have you searched and browsed through past topics here?? I know its not much fun but you *should* do it first! Here's one that may apply later on on the topic: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...ndpost&p=319894 @oliska mainly but probably applies to reefer4411too: boooggy may be on track with this one, although I don't believe he's exactly right. I "think" that you can activate the same copy/Product Key up to 4 times a year i.e. This *doesnt* mean you can stick it on 4 pc's or give it to your friends, its in case of a problem - thus allowing you to reinstall your OS again and reactivate. I also believe that you can't activate a few times in a row too - i.e. if you have installed & activated xp (to test a custom/unattended XP CD) and then create a new cd and repeat the process again within a week or so [this is speculaton more than anything] so if you have, this may be why. Also, if your unattended cd is setup that it skips the welcome to XP introduction part, you may not get the phone numbers and so on, although I can't remember if this is the case or not - but you can use the Sysprep tool [do a search on that if interested] to reseal (make the machine reset to a end-user factory state i.e. like you would have when you buy a machine from a company) it and then if you try activating after going through the usual Welcome screens, and try activating then, you should have more luck and get the phone numbers then. The Product Key may not be appropriate for the "OEM slipstreamed installation" (depending on what that actually is). You should only be using such a thing if you yourself made it. If someone has given you it, then they (and you) are breaking the EULA, as although you are allowed to customise your own CD for reinstalling purposes, you may NOT distribute it to a 3rd party i.e. a friend. The only exception would be in a organisation where, for example, an administrator would give a copy of a custom CD to a technician who was gonna be installing it on a machine. And of course, if the media is a "dodgy" or "illegal" copy, then you a) shouldn't be using it and B) it's probably not gonna work - you should use the copy that CAME with the computer. um.....make sure the letters/numbers you are using are correct. Also, try to make it without the key in - it wont be fully unattended then, but it may make it easier for you. Of course! I'm sure any MS number can point you to the right number if you call it Hope it helps. Regards, N.
  13. Just for curiousity (as I make up a cd front end for updating/fixing stuff in windows combined with the lovely booting 911 Rescue CD) - what sort of front end do ya use? I looked for a decent, easy to use, CD Menu system but everything i stumbled upon either cost money or didn't have the features I wanted/needed. Also, are you allowed to distribute a cd image containing software from companies - even if it is freely avaliable? I was gonna offer to host, but ppl downloading that size all the time wud really hit the bandwidth allowance i have with the hosting company lol Regards and looks good Nath.
  14. Please follow the rules - you have already posted the exact same topic yesterday! Regards, N.
  15. Hi there I think you have posted this in the wrong topic. This is for programming matters, not Internet & firewall problems. There's plenty of topics discussing that on the other parts of the forum. Try browsing the sections a bit or using the search facilities. Regards and sorry if you meant downloading via a local/internal website of some sort (maybe post being more specific would be helpful), Nath.
  16. can't remember mate - haven't looked at those machines for a while (plus been off work for 5 weeks lol so not gonna see them til next week) but I shall have a look [when i get a chance] and let ya know Cheers, N.
  17. nice sript - look forward to trying it out on the pc's where i get trouble with WU. cheers. No, what 2N3xu5 refers to describes what I see happen on a few pc's at work - i cant remember the exact detail but the updates dont install, and in my case, wont install if you visit WU too But I'll be giving your little script a blast to see how it goes Thanks Nath.
  18. Might be able to help you in the future - should be getting Exchange 2003 within the next month or so. It'll be something I'll be looking into myself so do a bump in a month or so - if you find out in the meantime, please post some info back too Cheers, Nath
  19. I know what you mean N3xu5 but I've never tried fixing it yet - it happens to a few of them at work. I believe (but can't confirm it) that part of the WU software is/has become corrupt and causes it to stick. Please someone say if this isn't the case, but as I said, its not something I've fully looked into yet. Just for info: - are you running SP2? - if so, did it come with SP2, installed manually via file on a cd/HD, or through Windows Update? - if you can use Windows Update manually, is there a list of them that are avaliable? i.e. ones that should have been downloaded to the machine and then it would have asked you to install (or custom) them - If there are some listed, does it download them and install them correctly? You may want to try running all the usual scans (A/V, Anti-Spyware) along with registry cleaners/fixers/optimisers (as it maybe down to corrupt settings in the registry) and also clean out temp files and prefetch (using a tool - not got the link to one handy but other topics on here should have it) and see if that makes a difference Please post back as I'd like to know whats causing the prob too so I can fix it in the future. Regards, N.
  20. lol indeed, although I cant think of any situation where I would use "software" raid.... hmmmm.... too much can go wrong in my opinion Hardware RAID (with backup solution) or buy another HDD is what I'd suggest. Regards, N.
  21. have you tried looking up XP takes a long time to boot (or something similar) on the Microsoft Knowledge Base? You may be able to find something relating to your problem If you do find something, please post back to your topic here so others can know thanks Good luck, Nath.
  22. As I remember (not having done the repair option for a long time) you'll always get it asking to Activate Windows. As you said, its only a trail and you either enter your legit product key into it, to activate it, or you wipe it completely (repairing does not give you another 30 days if thats what you're thinking) to have another 30 days. Its as simple as that. Regards, N.
  23. er.....according to the info in the config you have there, it appears you have a few HD's/partitions and multiboot different OS'. Without you listing what OS' you currently have installed and on what partition they are installed to, i wouldn't like to suggest you do anything to the config lol Also, as you are on about Longhorn, you should have posted this in the correct board really. Regards, N.
  24. but be warey that if one HD dies, the whole partition (i think) will be lost i.e. you'll lose everything Its probably best to get a new HD with enough space on it for what you want. Plenty of topics on that already so i wont suggest any, but if its a IDE style one, then they are dirt cheap really. All the best, N.
  25. My Acer laptop (see sig) was thankfully *NOT* loaded down by a load of crap. Just some essentials like PowerDVD 5 (shame it wasnt 6 but still works well) and NTI CD & DVD creation software (which i'm not familiar with that much, but works well - love nero tho) It asked to backup the system to a DVD when starting the system which was interesting so i decided to update windows and stuff first hehe All the drivers are avaliable from the website but i'm a tad nervous when it comes to wiping laptop's that aren't cheapo custom ones as this has a hidden partition thats used for something. I haven't looked at my CD's yet that came with the system properly. Dunno whether the XP CD is a "normal" oem CD or not yet lol The system was performing nicely so didn't really wanna wipe it. I wont now after installing a load of stuff onto it and using it as the main pc Just a few cents here (anyone know about this hidden partiton at all? I know its for some sort of restore process but If I completely wiped the HD, i wonder whether i could get it back - or if i need it at all) Anyhow... Regards, N.
