  1. @mo832: NeauCloux implied that BlackWingCat had looked at it and given the issue a solution. So I searched his blog. This article at BlackWingCat's seems to point to a solution that permits to keep v4.5, while restoring it's ability to work Ok (= not always on red flag). So, since you have nothing to lose, why not try it before removing v.4.5? In case it works, we'd learn something, and you'd avoid removing/reinstalling MSE, right? So, do the following: Whether the problem gets solved or not, let us know. Good luck!
  2. The problem with keeping to v. 4.5 is exactly that: it'll be always showing the red flag. So, although it updates and works all right (but for that), you lose the warning feature (red meaning something wrong like a malware found or definitions out of date; brown meaning system scan too old; green meaning all well and blue meaning updating, IIRR). Removing it and going back to version 4.4 fixes all that and has no known disadvantages. That's all.
  3. If the idea is to just set up an isolated file server, then NetBSD or TinHat Linux should be the best options, IMHO...
  4. Never mind, LoneCrusader, it's solved (and as per your suggestion, BTW):
  5. Might this or this be of help?
  6. You really manage to be terse, now, don't you? What those floppies correspond to in your hardware? Which 9x are you on, presently? Efkharistó polí!
  7. C (with some C++ and even less C#), with some Assembler tossed in here and there.
  8. Of course! It's just a common window! Thanks! And then, on to remove KB3035583 (at the very least), of course!
  9. BTW, since my experience with that message is nil... is there a way of dismissing/cancelling it without clicking either "Upgrade now" or "Start download, upgrade later"? Or, once it shows up, the only way to go is to redeploy a previous image?
  10. maximus-decim probably just lost interest... But... the latest IE6 upadate for 2k, findable through tomasz86 list/site, should be usable to update m-d's last cumulative update and bring it to a more current, albeit not very current, state. Of course, I don't have the slightest idea whether it actually is worth the effort, but the only way to find that out is by doing it, as you all do know well.
  11. It does work. But you may have any of a number of other problems that prevent you from even installing. In case you really want help, you shold describe as completely as possible what exact happens, since "it does not work" is way too vague to allow any meaningful help from our members.
  12. BlackWingCat has just released his unofficial root certificates update, which works on 9x/ME. Those are the very latest certificates. Do give it a try, and let's find out whether it improves things somewhat or not.
  13. All single-core AMD processors (including the great Athlon XP Barton family) also lack SSE2.
  14. The quote below lists some motives for one to keep on Windows 8.0 (for more info just click on its jumpback link):
  15. If you had already installed one of the later updates that superseded it, the installer would tell you it is not applicable to your system. BTW, you don't use the Flash Player? Really?
  16. Well, here's a possible explanation... KB3134214 (MS16-018) is the Low-level MS Graphics Component, which was replaced by KB3139852 (MS16-034) in March, then by KB3145739 (MS16-039) in April, which should be still current. and, likewise... KB3135782 (MS16-022) is the Adobe Flash Player, which was replaced by KB3144756 (MS16-036) in March, then by KB3154132 (MS16-050) in April, which should be still current. The others I didn't follow, but may also have been superseded, or maybe even they weren't relevant for Jody's system. This is just my 2¢, of course!
  17. Of course! You failed to edit the .inf as directed in the post above. If you hadn't, it would contain: And cause no such message. Instructions should be followed, not ignored.
  18. Sure. Then again, he did warn people to use his "archive" link instead...
  19. True, but making an effort to spell correctly shows respect to users and interest in what one's doing and talking about. I can see you do it, and I do it, too... and neither of us is a native speaker of English, AFAICS...
  20. Roffen, with all due respect, whatever benefits the SP4 might bring you are obviously outweighted by the amout of grief you've already got from it. Were I you, I'd reinstall SP3, make a full backup, apply all availble updates, make a second full backup, then add the POSReady trick and add the newly available updates, make yet another full backup, store the backups in a safe place and call it a day... Of course, those are just my 2¢.
  21. @FranceBB: You want to learn something? Get yourself the latest version of WildBill's 2k kernel32.dll rewrite (it's functional but not fully debugged yet) and study it dilligently. And while at it, do also muse over why has it taken so long for WildBill (who is in the real big league) to write it (and why he decided to rewrite instead of just adding functonality to the existing MS one) and to debug it to the poit it reached (which is early beta)...
  22. I stand corrected in that the correct file for you is mpas-fe.exe, not mpam-fe.exe. That said, the patching method I described for one applies equally to the other.
  23. IIRR, mpam-fe.exe also updates Windows Defender. So I think my solution should work for you, too, all right. It's quite well behaved, though, so that if it does not find what it thinks it can update, it just finishses silently without having done anything. Whatever the result, do keep us posted, please!
