  1. It's OK! We should start looking whether it's possible to port the "Primetime Content Decryption Module" to Pale Moon for Atom/XP, for the sake of future-proofing... of course, this is just my 2¢.
  2. Nothing's wrong with Chromium. They don't want XP anymore. It's their right. Nobody ought to keep supporting any OS against their will.
  3. Look at my list (Post #1)... the undesirable updates included in KB3125574 are now marked "(also in CR)". Then you tell me what you think I think about roll-ups in general, OK? However, in particular, this KB3156417 seems to be harmless, AFAICS.
  4. Don't hold your breath... KernelEx was never meant to work with drivers (neither VxDs nor WDM), so that's by design.
  5. An undocumented solution has been found, that allows FF to play all kinds of videos... or, on other words, it has been fixed already!!! Read all about it here: Enable MP4 (H.264 + AAC) HTML5 video in Firefox on Windows XP without Flash. Isn't it great? We don't need Chrome for anything, anymore!!!
  6. @blackwingcat: Your PM box should be working OK, now. If not, please let me know.
  7. browser.exe is not a MS file. browser.dll is a MS file, but has not that version number, for sure. Are you having a dll name collision? The browser.dll on my Windows 7 x64 Ultimate is v. 6.1.7601.17887 (win7sp1_gdr.120704-0720), dated 2012-Jul-04 ...
  8. Is it this one?
  9. Welcome to MSFN!
  10. That's why this new MS strategy (= shoving Win 10 up people's machines) is better for MS than any other: once it's there, it's incredible how many people'll prefer to just leave it alone, even it they don't like it, so long as they don't hate it with a passion... and then MS's 10 adoption numbers grow fatter and fatter!
  11. No way! No Win 10 in any of my machines.
  12. Nothing. It's great and it just works! Long live, XP!
  13. It's OK, really! Like I said, we're much better safe than sorry. There's no such a thing as "excess zeal", in matters like this one.
  14. Use Fernando's modded drivers, then change the Start to 0, then reboot and change to AHCI in bios. I think Fernando gives more detailed intructions (either somewhere here at MSFN or at his own forum), but that's the gist of it. Then, after all the effort involved, you may realize... ...it's not quite worth the effort (IMO, YMMV). Good luck!
  15. Which disks are you using (brand, model and size)? Are they AF? Are they SATA-300 or SATA-600? Meanwhile you may try this (KB922976)...
  16. It's there already! But thanks anyway, we must keep eyes wide open, all the time.
  17. I've checked the lists published here and, considering them accurate, I stand corrected: it does not include any of the GWX thingies. That said, it does include various telemetry thingies, though (viz. KB3068708, KB3075249, KB3080149, KB3081954) and the Universal C thingies... so I've updated my list, by adding a -- rather cryptic -- "(also in CR)" note besides those update numbers, for easy reference. It also does include the rather questionable update KB2882822, which is not in my list, but might perhaps be there... So this is what I think I know (do we ever?), ATM.
  18. It's quite simple, really: a number of those updates are part of the telemetry system or the update to win 10 (GWX) system (check my list)... hence they are a convenience for MS, not the users, as expected.
  19. Because things tend to fall by themselves into the memory hole, given enough time.
  20. Error 0x80070005 means "ACCESS DENIED"... Something is failing to write to something else. I bet the problem is with access rights... Something may have changed some somewhere... Try running as SYSTEM. You may use QwertyLab's runassystem for that. A cmd box with SYSTEM privileges should be able to write anywhere, in principle.

    No Updates!

@Yzöwl: Are you sure you've got the latest WindowsUpdateAgent? You might as well update it, if in doubt. It's harmless, if not needed, you know.
  22. Sure. And, despite what MS says, it works equally well for Office 97, too. However, one must take care to avoid GIFIMP32.FLT 2003.1100.8327.0 from KB2479871, which refuses to import GIFs for Office-97. GIFIMP32.FLT 2003.1100.8165.0 from KB924090 is the last one known to work with Office-97, and must be used instead.
