Try StartupLite

I second geek's suggestion. It would probably be much easier in the long run.

Happens to me too. Just hit refresh. It's probably a session timing out.

It's like saying Server 2003 is more of an update than a new product.
-
Now if that was true, then you would not see all of these third party update packages (that violate the Microsoft EULA for hotfixes) all over the Internet and on forums. Right now, Windows XP and Vista are the most up to date and secure.

BenoitRen, sorry but you must simply accept fact that even on this forum Win95 users are in minority. You're very correct. For Windows 9x/Me, usage doesn't even total 1%. In fact, there is a steady decline. The ranges from 0.48% - 0.58%, and W3 Counter reports 0.96%, though the four others (Net Applications, XiTi Monitor, OneStat and Median) seem to have the more normalized range. I want to upgrade from Me to Server 2003 -how?
Tarun replied to esecallum's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I agree with others here, if you are going to go with XP (or 2003), format and do a clean install. -
Your best bet is using a free Virtual Machine such as Microsoft Virtual PC or Sun xVM VirtualBox. If you want drag and drop, use MSVPC, if you can live without it, Sun xVM VBox works wonderfully!

need to reinstall xp with a dell disc on an hp computer
Tarun replied to hmunster123's topic in Windows XP
Call HP and ask them to send you a restore CD. Tell them you never got one. Seems strange you have a Dell restore CD with an HP notebook. -
Title fixed. You may want to review the Forum Rules. 12. Very often we see meaningless subjects in topic title. They give no clue of what the posts are all about. For example: - Oh no! - Help - I'm mad - Please help - Question - I need your help - Hmmmm .... This should be avoided. Users should enter something more specific in topic title so that it is easier for others to help. A few good examples: - Strange problem with DirectX9b redist - RunOnceEx install problem (double installation) - Change Internet Explorer's Icon back to default

As geek said, keep this discussion clean.

Why the UL post-install SP2 isn't available...?!
Tarun replied to gicamuci's topic in Windows Updates Downloader
There are already fixes for the HP AMD issue, including a hotfix from Microsoft. SP3 is still good to go -
patching uxtheme on xp pro sp2 build 3790
Tarun replied to dandin1's topic in Windows XP 64 Bit Edition
I overlooked where this thread was, since I clicked it from the frontpage. Sorry about that, dandin; my mistake. -
I completely understood where you were coming from. Just letting you know that Microsoft is not to blame; all of the information one would need is present in that article, and it is detailed quite nicely. Btw, you do an excellent job with the English language.

You should update to SP3 and then use damian666's UXTheme Patch. -
Actually, Microsoft did explain it to you in plain English and quite clearly I might add. They also very nicely explain exactly how to delete registry values: Both of those quotes come directly from the MSKB that you linked. Now for what you want to do, it's be exactly as GrofLuigi has said. Let's say you have a test application that you want to stop from starting up with the computer for every user account. You would put this into your .reg file: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 = Windows 2000 and up REGEDIT4 = Windows Me and below. So since you're working with Windows XP Pro x64, you would have: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "MyStartupApp"=- I would advise that you slow down and read through things thoroughly before jumping into things. When you edit the registry without knowing what you are doing, there is a great potential to cause problems. If anyone is unfamiliar with the registry, it's best to leave it alone.

Best Spyware Protection for Windows XP
Tarun replied to Uméesh's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
Unfortunately there is no single one that will do the trick. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender, RogueRemover and many others help. [ Moved to Malware Prevention section ] -
Happy birthday dude!

If you've got a router that would be quite easy. If you don't have a router, you may want something like a Linksys WRT54GL. You can load it with custom Tomato firmware which has excellent restrictions. Watch this Access Restriction (2MB) video

If you're going up to Windows XP you'd be best getting a fresh start. You can however put the hard drive from Windows 98 in as a slave. From the two items you listed (scandisk and Clean9x) you won't need real DOS for those. Windows XP has chkdsk and you can use CCleaner and other useful tools. I completely agree with others about giving XP a try at least. You can quite easily achieve uptimes of weeks to months from the stable kernel. And when I say stable, I mean you'll most likely never see a blue screen again. Plus you get better memory management. When I used Windows 9x/Me I had to reboot at least once a day due to reduced resources from usage. You never have to do that again with Windows XP. When I was using Windows Me I thought it was the best. Yet, when I got my a new computer with Windows XP Pro on it, I haven't looked back once. You can very easily enjoy Windows XP with 512MB of RAM and go as high as 4GB of RAM (for 32 bit). It's a very enjoyable OS. I cannot stress enough how great it is, from memory management, to the stability, immense number of programs (and freeware), everything just works so well. You won't have to stress with drivers and other things from the Windows 9x/Me era either. Everything just works. If it needs drivers, they're very easy to get and install too! Your son sounds like he's trying to help you by setting everything up. As mentioned, use the classic theme if you want it to have the Windows 9x feel. I bet there are even icon packs to have the Windows 9x/Me feel.
