  1. No, it's not. But you can still edit most policies through the registry editor. I've tried it on an XP home computer. Some parent got ticked off at their kid for always locking the computer as they didn't know his password or have any clue how to unlock it. Now that user can't lock the computer, thanks to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System!DisableLockWorkstation
  2. I am putting this in the Windows XP forum because it's on a machine with Windows XP. If it should be moved, please let me know. All of the USB ports are out on my laptop. It is not a hardware issue, Dell Diagnostics confirms that - my USB key lights up and is fine, and the diagnostics utility says they're fine. However the device manager says that the drivers are not working - that there's a problem with the drivers. I looked into this, and apparently this is maybe part of the issue: Driver details for all of the 5 drivers shown (there are only 4 usb ports, so this makes no sense). All the driver details show several microsoft-signed drivers and a non-signed driver in the following location: I researched this driver and found that it is a USB driver for Virtual Box. I attempted to install Virtual Box on about April 2nd or 3rd. It didn't work - the computer did a BSOD on me. I don't remember the error code. So anyhow, after I rebooted following the BSOD, I went and looked and apparently nothing had been installed - there were no Virtual Box related folders in Program Files, it didn't show up in Add or Remove program files in the control panel. It appeared that nothing was done. But, there is this driver on the computer that might be part of the problem. I am fairly sure it is from Virtual Box. I have since installed MS virtual PC. I do not think it is related to that. Now since Virtual Box was never installed, I can't uninstall any components - like this rogue driver. Other possible causes/relevant info: I first noticed this the 4th. I hadn't used anything USB since about the 1st or March 30th about. There have been microsoft updates since I last used USB, and they may be related. A patch for the .ani bug was released on Tuesday, out of cycle, and has reportedly broken some things elsewhere. I don't think this is related but it could be. Here is the system info: Type: Dell Inspiron E1505, about 4 months old OS: GENUINE Windows XP Media Center 2005 SP2 Processor: Intel Core Duo RAM: 1gb Hard drive: about 60gb 4 USB connectors, none of which work Anything else you need to know? I have seen on other (inferior to MSFN ) boards talk of this happening. It seems to be happening mostly to Dells. Any clues what might be going on? This is a big problem for me, as I use USB devices a lot. Camera and memory key, mostly, which I use very frequently. I am considering maybe trying to install Virtual Box again, and if it works, uninstalling it to maybe remove the said driver. Any suggestions on what the heck I can do? Here a re couple of screenshots, one of the device manager and one of the details for one of the drivers.
  3. Two funny nerd jokes, both true stories changed to be funnier, based on what a friend of mine said about a day at school recently. The first "nerdy" event happened in P.E. They were playing volleyball. The person with the ball walked up to the nerd and said "Do you want to be the server?" The nerd replied "Who me? No way! I'm a workstation, not a server!" The other kid looked at him with a blank stare. "huh?" "Oh, never mind," said the nerd. "No, I don't want to." Later that day in math class, the teacher was talking and said "Now, open your books and turn to page 404." The (same) nerd, without even opening his book, replied "I can't find it!". The teacher didn't understand, "Just turn to page 404! It's there... the one after page 403!" The nerd quickly responded "but I'm not allowed to go to page 403!" The teacher, getting mad, was about to come over and show the student where the page was. "never mind, here it is," he said, rolling his eyes. OK, that's it, any other nerdy stories are welcome!
  4. Yay! It worked just fine. Thanks all!
  5. Aren't they the same thing... the number on the COA?
  6. Well well! In safe mode, it did work. Not sure why, but it did!
  7. Well, I tried it in Virtual PC 2007 (since I wanted to "practice" first and not screw up my computer). I replaced the original winbrand.dll, but it didn't work. Now I know there's supposed to be a copy in dllcache that I replace, but I couldn't find dllcache on the VM computer. Not there. So now what? It didn't work.
  8. Well, XP Media center right now, but soon some kind of linux in a VM, but I haven't decided what distribution or anything yet... looking at Ubuntu - any suggestions?
  9. Well, define crash. Freezes? Occasionally when I have a lot of ram-sucking apps open, it will freeze. But I've only had a bluescreen once. I was installing - or trying to install - Virtual Box, and it BSOD on me. Booh. But my XP hardly ever freezes, and the whole system like never goes out. But the old windows 98 sitting in my living room... don't even go there.
  11. Or just get PowerPoint, or if you don't want to buy it, get the free PowerPoint viewer from Microsoft. Powerpoints aren't supported natively, but you can get pp viewer for free, so why not?
  12. Try this: Right-click on the desktop. Choose "Graphics Properties". If it's there, you get controls for things like which monitor to use as default, etc. If it isn't there, try right-click on desktop, choose "properties" and under the settings tab, mess around.
  13. Almost but not quite like Pro. Some differences as mentioned above. But if you want it to look like Win2K: Turn off the stupid Welcome screen so you can have the Windows Classic logon prompt. Go to Control panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on and off > Uncheck Use the Welcome Screen > Press Apply. This will make your logon look like Win2K rather than preschool. Also, it will allow you to lock the computer and such, which you can't do with the welcome screen. Use Windows Classic theme. Desktop > right-click > select Windows Classic > OK Turn off Simple File Sharing. My Computer > Tools menu > Folder options > View tab > uncheck use Simple file sharing
  14. I'm curious and confused. I have MCE. Does that mean I can "downgrade" to XP Pro? Somehow I doubt that since Dell wanted an extra $150 for XP Pro which is why I don't have it. So could I find an XP Pro CD and use my XP MCE key to install Xp Pro? If so, and if it's legal, I'd like to know... that would be good for me!
  15. This is lame, and only somewhat relevant. Someone said it on Slashdot a while ago, modified slightly to make sense and be funnier... ---------------------- "Arguing with an Engineer is kind of like wrestling with a pig in the mud... after a while you start to realize that they're actually enjoying it - a lot." ---------------------- Funny, lame, and totally true.
  16. Everyone where I spend my weekdays (as in "work") writes their passwords down on post-its then stick them on their monitors. The never lock the computers, either. It is somewhat interesting to go in there when they're gone and leave it open and to send an email to themselves saying "Hi! My name is %person%. I write down my password, leave my workstation unlocked and do other unsafe things like that!" They sometimes do something about it, sometimes not. People just don't get it sometimes... oh well. I've started an education campaign to inform people about computer safety. I steal their password sticky notes and throw them away, replacing it with one that says "don't write down your passwords. Now look on the back of this to get your password, then go change it. I mean it. I will be back." And also leaving little sheets about how you should lock your computer on their keyboards if they leave. Gets the point across to some of them. Hah.
  17. OK, I got MS Virtual PC installed, and made a new virtual machine, it launched and doesn't do anything. I apologize for my ignorance , now do I put in the OEM Reinstall DVD? I think that's what it wants me to do, but I'm not sure. And will I have to activate Windows? It would be nice if there were a way to just boot up the already installed XP into the VM as a separate one if you know what I mean, but I don't think that's possible.
  18. Sounds like a bunch of FUD to me. I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) but I think that you can legally downgrade to XP from Vista. You could maybe try installing XP, use your Vista product key, do an upgrade not a fresh install, and then maybe that would work? I think that's allowed, if not, DO NOT do that. No illegal activity allowed.
  19. I tried installing Virtual Box. The system Bluescreened during installation. :realmad: Until I find out more about what the heck happened and why, this is all on hold. Any ideas why this happened? I'm kinda not so happy.
  20. It does seem to work! Thank you thank you thank you! Maybe it didn't for you, but it did for me, in Firefox, IE 6 and Opera. Thank you thank you. Stupid me, I forgot the darn units. Should have known that. Thanks again.
  21. Would I need a new XP license? I've never used a VM. Could you tell me a little more... please? I'm kinda clueless about this... What do you mean by a "test install"? I have an OEM copy of Windows XP Media Center, just for the record. UPDATE: I found the Virtual PC 2007 website, and it says I would need Windows XP Professional to run it... since Windows XP Media Center 2005 is based on XP Pro, would it still work, or not? I have yet to look at VMware, and will go do that now. UPDATE: It looks like I would have to buy VMware, I don't want to do that, so I guess Virtual PC is my best option, if it will work. Anyone have any suggestions?
  22. This is what I have before <html>: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> I tried changing <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> to <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?> but it still didn't work... I suppose I could just forget the whole validation/doctype thing for that page, but I don't really want to...
