  1. Yes. I do. But I can remove the things by just using the standard USB transfer if necessary. I don't need any drivers at all for the computer to recognize the card reader? That surprises me. Remember, this is built in, not USB. Thanks. PS: I forgot to say, this is a Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505 laptop.
  2. OK, I'll do that. It'll be a couple days. I have (obviously ) no USB support on the machine and no CD burner either, so I need to use a floppy, then get to a computer that has a floppy drive and supports USB, too, so I can use my flash drive to move it over to this computer. (neither of the two "new" computers I have regular access to have floppy drives). I'll upload it hopefully by Wednesday, maybe sooner. Thanks again for the help.
  3. Hiya! don't feel bad, I don't know ANY c++. But I do know a lot of HTML, JavaScript and CSS. CSS is cool!
  4. How about something along the lines of "An error occurred while attempting to shut down Windows. Click Help for more information, or click cancel to terminate the operation." and in the second dialog (help) "Try restarting your computer to resolve this problem."
  5. This may have been reported before, but I didn't see it searching MSFN, so here goes. If this is a dupe, fo ahead and remove it, mods. So! Apple has this great new product called the iRack. Try saying it out loud. See this hilarious video about what it is and what happens. Best viewed with other people, and without food in your mouth. I was rolling on the floor when I saw this. Not for supporters of the iRack - i mean Iraq - war. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0ahfEufHAw Hee hee! Enjoy!
  6. Well, what's your setup? I'm curious. I'm using a laptop, so I have only one screen - the built in one - but I sometimes connect another when there's another available. I do use virtual desktops though. They're the next best thing in my opinion.
  7. So I have a Dell laptop with a built in (as in in the side next to the usb ports) 5-in-1 media card reader, for SD cards and the like. For the first time since I got it in december, I decided to try and stick in my SD card. Nothing happened. I tried again. It was in the right direction, it was snug and all that. I don't have any other media types to try, sorry. Here's the info: --Computer-- Intel Core Duo 1gb RAM CD/DVD reader/writer Built in wireless 4 usb ports 15.4 inch widescreen LCD and a VGA port on back with nothing connected Windows XP Media Center 2005 SP2 All windows updates, etc. applied A non-functional 5-in-1 media reader --The memory cards-- Three: 512 mb Lexar SD cards One: 128 mb Lexar SD card --What the Device manager says-- So here's what I expect is the deal: there's no driver for SD cards, or else not for this brand of SD card. Does anyone have any other ideas? I guess I'll go looking on the Lexar website for drivers, but in the mean time, anyone have an idea what's going on? Thanks in advance!
  8. Don't think the cd still is around... it may have never existed, actually. The machine's an ancient Compaq and had windows 98 pre-installed. Could I find the necessary file for upload on the computer somewhere (like C:/windows) and copy it over here and upload it? I will look for a CD, but I doubt I have one.
  9. Pardon my ignorance. What file do I need to find? Any old version of systray.exe that's before 4.10.2224? What do I do when I find that file? I would greatly appreciate it if someone made a windows 98 fe package or something, and I'll get that file for oyu but I need to know what file... Again, I'm sorry for the hassle.
  10. Yes/no. Not if you just put the .ppt or .pps file on a cd. But what version of powerpoint do you have? In PowerPoint 2003, and possibly XP and 2007, there is a presentation cd feature. Open the presentation you want to put on the CD. Click file > package for cd. It will let you choose options including whether or not to add other presentations, add any linked files (like other ppts or pdf or videos or whatever), etc. It will also include a copy of the powerpoint viewer. You will be able to open the powerpoint (but not edit it in any way) from any PC with windows 98se (i think) or later. I have verified that it works on Windows 2000 and XP, but I don't know about vista. This WILL NOT work on a mac. I highly advise against using the same presentation on macs and pcs, or between different versions even. Big problems surface, trust me. You may want to look into converting the final presentation to a .avi or better yet a flash video. That way you could play it with any media player or with flash player. Good luck!
  11. If you use Windows 98 NOT second edition you must replace systray.exe 4.10.2224 with older version. What? Sorry, maybe I didn't explain well. I want to be able to use USB storage devices, like a flash drive, on Windows 98, non second edition. The info on the first page said they were for window 98 se. Are there any usb drivers for windows 98 regular is my question.
  12. I tried that on someone... they got mad and hit me back.
  13. I saw something like this below on the web... it was a low-res jpg though, so I made my own better png version. I don't think this is even possible, but it's a darn funny thought - a BSOD crashing.
  14. What's he/she using it for? Windows XP home is fine for most home uses like email and web browsing and some word processing and stuff. Windows XP Media Center is the best choice I say because it's built on XP Professional, so you get most of the XP Pro features. It also comes with all the media stuff. Windows XP Professional if you need to connect to a domain, etc. This is essentially the only XP Pro feature left out of media center edition. I don't know if you can still get XP Media Center. What OS is currently on the computer? I know you can still get XP Home and XP Pro.
  15. OK, true, I just think people should be careful. Glad to hear there were no problems for you.
  16. Nnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why why why would they do this? I've been waiting for SP3 for a long time. How can they do this to me? I am NOT going to vista, so if they refuse to support windows xp, I'll say to h*** with them and start using linux. Actually, all this panic may be unnecessary. On their life cycle page they say windows xp media center, which i use, will be supported until 2009. Surely there will be a service pack in the next two years? After that... well, I guess I may be using it for a bit longer than they support it. :angrym: :(
  17. Solaris. ReactOS. BeOS. OK, sorry, I have never really heard of those. Make sure you back up any files you want before you go and put linux on there.
  18. No, but kinda maybe yes. I know of no other FREE operating system. But if you go to a college, you may be able to get Windows XP from them for free or very little. If you are a US government employee, you can potentially get windows through your agency. They have a deal with microsoft. If you live in certain "third world" countries, you can get Windows XP Starter edition for very little money, but it's ridiculously watered down. Or you can get linux. It's not really that bad. I've used it some, never extensively, but as I said, I'm working on changing that. No other ways to a free upgrade I assume. Unless you pirate, but that's a big no-no. I advise against it. But think about it this way. How much does windows xp home cost? A $99 upgrade. How much do you use your computer? When you look at cost per hour of computer use, it's not as expensive as it seems. Of course, I'm not rushing to buy anything expensive, so I'm being hypocritical again, but it's a thought. If you can't, I understand. So ask your employer or school or something if you can get windows xp or even windows 2000 would be better. But don't get vista. Ugh.
  19. Or you if you can't afford a new operating system, GET a new operating system. By that I don't mean pirate, I mean get Linux. Free, no DRM, open source. Granted, I'm being a hypocrite - I use Windows XP not linux (thought that may soon change!) But seriously, a machine that doesn't work with Windows ME (and what machine does?? ) will work considerably better with Linux - I've seen it happen. Faster, less buggy, no BSODs ever. Just an idea.
  20. I have a similar issue. I have a SanDisk U3 Cruzer Micro, 512 mb. I want to be able to use it on an ancient Windows 98 machine in our house, but I can't because there aren't any drivers. The driver mentioned here - would it work with Windows 98 NOT second edition? If so, I'll try that, otherwise, does anyone know where I can find USB drivers for Windows 98 for the mentioned device, or better yet, all USB devices? Thanks in advance.
  21. What OS are you on? If you're on Windows XP (as the host) DO NOT USE VIRTUAL BOX!!! For me it killed the USB ports and gave me a BSOD. I advise you find more info or don't use it.
  22. WARNING! Do not use Virtual Box (not to be confused with Virtual PC) if you have Windows XP. I got a bluescreen when I tried, and it screwed up my USB devices (see this post: here). If anyone knows more info, please post in the post mentioned above, but I highly recommend you don't use Virtual Box until more is found out. Virtual PC works fine, but it's Microsoft, and so it should work with microsoft software.
  23. Solved! It was, indeed, VirtualBox causing the problem. After hunting around on the Virtual Box website, I found the following info: Well, here's another case for them, then I'm not sure why this happened. It seems it was the issue with it not installing right. Now the issue is fixed, yay! If anyone else has an issue like this, I recommend you visit this webpage: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/User_FAQ I'm glad I solved this, sorry for wasting anyone's time. Hopefully this will be useful to someone else some day!
