Update: After a reboot, it still isn't working. Any ideas why? And Yzowl, how did you do the original?

A .css. I killed explorer, relaunched it and still, it's not there. Then I logged off and back on. I'll see if restarting works. Yeah, I made it and put it in the folder. Anyhow, after rooting around a bit, I realized that this can be done (supposedly) from TweakUI, the power toy. When I tried, it sorta-kinda worked. It got rid of the ones I wanted gone, but adding this CSS doc didn't work. I haven't tried with anything else - yet. Here's what it looks like, in case you wanted to know anyone. Oh, and log in as an Admin to do this.

WARNING: Following these instructions could result in you not being able to use your computer. Be careful, and lock out someone else's computer, not yours! Want to drive someone nuts? Go into the C:/Documents and Settings/<some user>/Start Menu/Programs/Startup folder. Make s shortcut to "shutdown.exe -l" What happens, you ask? Well, don't do this to yourself. It will make you log off as soon as you log on. A practical use for this: If your computer boots slowly and takes forever to log on, put a shortcut to "rundll32.exe user32.dll LockWorkStation" in your startup folder. Then, you can log on and leave yourself to log on slowly and go get a drink or whatever. The computer will lock itself as soon as it's started up. EDIT Note: It does not appear to work in Safe Mode, so you can recover. But it's fun none the less!

In Internet Explorer, you can use the group policy or tools like TweakUI to customize the browser by... Adding "Internet Explorer Provided by <yournamehere>" Changing the little windows flag logo to a logo of your choice Is there a way to do this with firefox/ Obviously, you can't use the group policy as FF isn't integrated with the OS like IE is. But it would be nice to change the title bar and to change perhaps that little rotating wheel-like-dotty-thing in the upper right hand corner and on tabs while they load. Anyone know how? I suppose I could find a way to hack firefox.exe using resource hacker, but is there an easier way? I always love how my friends use my computer and say "whaa- how'd you get your name on the title bar? How'd you change that icon?" but now that I use FF usually rather than IE, I would like to do this there, too.

Well, you've never met me, I suppose. I have about a 4.2 GPA. On a 0-4 scale, thanks to having some classes with weighted grades. Also, though I don't know everything about computers, I know a lot more than most people (people on this board do not count as "most people" ). Good at reading and the registry . Now most people I hang out with are either somewhat good at school and ok at computers or ok at computers and real good at school. But I do know several who are good at both. So nerd could be either, I suppose. I smell a poll coming... nerd or geek? What do they mean to you? Oh, and my school isn't technology-focused. Hardly any tech-related classes. Intro to Microsoft Office! Yipee... all stuff I knew long ago. And besides, who uses office 2000 any more?

I get quite a few of those sometimes... Well, it's highly debated. Around here, we consider ourselves nerds. As in computer/technology-oriented people. What we have decided on is the following: Nerds are interested/focused on computers, technology and school. Geeks are the same, only they don't care about school so much, and they might even be somewhat stupid with the exception of technology. I don't mind being called a geek, but I prefer being called a nerd. It's never really been decided which is which, so I use them somewhat interchangeably. I can tell you're a geek (no offense, I don't think you're stupid ) because you wrote I think you meant to say you're confused, as in you are confused, contracted. OK EVERYONE! Bring on the other nerd/geek jokes! Anything that warrants a blank stare from Joe Average is pootential material!

I voted Opera because I think it's the best of those listed. However, I use Firefox on a day-to-day basis, because I'm used to it and I like it better for some reason. But Opera has a lot of features and had some of Firefox's features first, so I gave it my vote. Worst browser? IE by far.

I have already seen, and posted in, that topic. I need Windows 98 NOT second edition drivers. But thanks anyways.

Just FYI, saying "Powerpoint - I need help" doesn't tell us anything. A better topic title would be "Powerpoint to DVD - How do yo do it?" or something like that. Just a suggestion.

Answer to your question: you need powerpoint or else openoffice or something similar. Otherwise:

Check you don't have some odd animations set up by accident.

Make sure that file extensions are shown in Windows Explorer. The, right-click on the .ppt file, and rename it to filename.pps. Voila! To see file extensions: open explorer go to the tools menu. click folder options open the view tab uncheck hide file extensions for known file types - it's near the bottom Click OK

Just use the make presentation CD feature if you have PPT 2003. file > create presentation CD (or something like that). It'll put all the files as well as the powerpoint viewer on the cd for you. Automatically plays on any windows computer with windows 98se or newer.

What version of powerpoint ya' got? 'Cause in Powerpoint 2003, there's a restrict permissions option, but it only works I think if you're connected to an exchange server. So if this is at a workplace, it will probably work. If you're just sending it out to family and friends, it probably won't.

Stop. You can not realistically move powerpoints from powerpoint for windows to powerpoint for mac. It doesn't work. Heck, even going between ppt 2003 and ppt 2000 is a pain. If you made it on a laptop, your best option is to just bring in the laptop. fact is, it doesn't work to move between the two. I've tried. I've failed. Sorry, but that's the hard truth. Welcome to the world of incompatible products. Videos have particular problems... proprietary .AVI and proprietary Quick Time get all muddled up in the process. If you can convert the AVI to flash somehow you might have a chance, but really, it's better worth your time to just bring in your laptop. How long does it take to plug a projector into the back of the computer? Plus then you get to have your own computer there not some unfamiliar school crapple, er apple computer. Very sorry, but there's nothing to be done.

Well, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with opening up the computer... fact is, I have very little hardware experience, though I am planning on learning more about hardware when I get a chance. Also, I think that would void the warranty and the EULA in some way... I seem to recall something about not screwing with the computer components, you have to take it to an authorized fixer-upper. It's a laptop, so it's a bit harder to just open up. Don't know if I could even get to that part. But thanks anyway for the suggestion, maybe someday I'll have the guts to do this myself.

The monitor?

I HATE floppies... if they aren't dead yet, kill 'em, please! 1.44 mb? When my flash drive has 512mb? And I can get a flash drive with several gigs? Nope. Only thing I use those darn floppies for is transferring the odd file from an ancient windows 98 computer (soon to get USB support perhaps, thanks to MSFN). Oh, and they're cool to dissect. And then discard promptly.

I am thinking you are also assuming the original poster has Windows XP Home Edition installation source and key. Nope, I am assuming he SELLS his XP MCE and buys XP Home Edition, making a small profit in the process, since firstly, you cannot even buy MCE in shops and secondly, it is more valuable than XP Home because of the very features it has that he does not need or want. How do you know Idontwantspam does not neer or want features in MCE? Wholly #$%*! The whole thing is that it would be GOOD to have XP Pro without having to pay a gazzlillion extra dollars. I don't WANT Xp home edition. It doesn't really matter, I was just curious. Media Center works fine. It has the components I want, and I don't need to connect to a domain, so I'll just stay like this. I was just curious is all. Besides, it's a Dell OEM reinstall disk, so reselling it would be a big no-no. It says very clearly, both on the disk and in the EULA that the CD is for distribution with a new dell computer only, and is not for resale.

No... but this machine is NOT on a network, not on the web - it's all by its lonesome self. that's one big reason for needing USB - flash drives!
