  1. Have you tried Tri-SLi? It doesn't scale well at all. Its probably 2x faster than just the original GPU. Easy. Send it to the (now sterile) user's lap.

    1. This is the Windows Vista forum. You can see that by reading the titles above the forums. 2. This is not a Vista issue. 3. You do not even have Vista as indicated by your sig. 4. This is a very vague question. There are hundreds of solutions to your problem.
  3. You have two options: Option 1: Router Easy. No hair pulling involved. Pricier More information available if things go wrong Option 2: Bluetooth Very difficult. Free. You already have the hardware Little if any troubleshooting information. Option 3: Buy an ethernet cable. Very easy. Cheap Lots of info available. Only problem is you have to hide the cord. Or not.

    Startup

there are 2 types of startup, fresh and from hibernate. fresh should be the same speed every time hibernate will vary in speed since it saves the last thing you did. when it starts up you don't see the vista boot screen. you see a bluish aurora screen that says "resuming....." the more applications you had open before hibernate shutdown, the slower it will be.
  5. no its not faster. its also a beta, so don't come crying when you find issues with it. p.s. paragraphs are your friend. i only read the title as will most people responding to your question.
  6. disable all of the entries. if they're needed then enable them one by one. i'm pretty sure the alps device is just a toobar notifier, the device driver would be elsewhere on the system and can only be disabled by device manager. are you using the google mail notifier? on the toobar. that's the only one i would keep. also, do you have the vista sidebar disabled? check your toolbar tray for this. its got a little logo of a gear, and it has that black gradient on the right side of the desktop.
  7. Wanna bet? Get a stopwatch and a copy of XP & Vista. Just because it 'feels' slower to you doesn't mean it is.
  8. Slow file transfers have been fixed awhile ago with Vista Service Pack 1.
  9. Does the noise happen when the cover is off? Could be a wire on a fan. Which area is the noise coming from? Get your head close to the computer and inspect.

    XP after Vista.

C: cannot be formatted. Ok, did you try to delete the partition/allocated space first and then to format with NTFS?
  11. You're suggesting troubleshooting. I'm suggesting possible optimizations for optimal performance and responsiveness. You're right, troubleshooting first. OP: We still need those startup items. And disable sidebar since it is known to cause issues like you mentioned with too many gadgets.
  12. Ohhhh..... Yeah. Rootkits can do that. I don't know the circumstances, maybe EAs rootkit found something it didn't like and tried to disable/change the entry leading to a corrupted registry. It is known to disable CD burning, and emulation tools like Alcohol 120%, Nero, Daemon tools.
  13. I don't believe your registry got corrupted because of a restart. I crashed games before when OCing my computer and never anything this bad. Do a virus scan/malware scan. Try: AntiVir classic Adaware Free Edition Spybot S&D It might find a pest which broke the system. You will still need to re-format and install the OS. Hope you have a disc handy.
  14. 37.27% Oh well. I like science and I'm a business major!

    XP after Vista.

    1. You need drivers. 2. You need an XP install disc. Follow the instructions. When you select where to install the OS. you are given the option of formatting the drive first. You can do a full format, or a quick format which is actually just an erase of the drive.
  16. Explain. What does the processor family have to do with the ram cappacity? The P4 series had a bunch of chipsets.
  17. Aero Baisc is using the CPU only, meanwhile the GPU is just sitting there doing nothing. Put the full Aero back on as it is heavily GPU based, then disable transparency if you are worried about battery life. You can also disable Min and Max animations for window resizing, and disable show contents of windows for extra responsiveness. Your computer should run Vista very well, so the problem looks to be software. Do the following: Start > Type in "msconfig". Go to the Startup tab and give us a screenshot. It lists the software that is loaded on startup which usually runs in the background. Also, how many gadgets do you have running in the sidebar? If you don't need them, get rid of them and disable the sidebar. It is a resource hog. Also, you have enough memory. Enable superfetch and prefetch and leave them alone. Indexing you don't need to disable it, you can configure it to index only certain folders like "Documents" or your user folder. This way you get the benefits of indexing with a negligible performance drop.
  18. Not like tat, its a computer.
  19. You bought a generic laptop. Whitebox notebook. ^ What he said. This doesn't solve the issue of: What does the motherboard support? You want to do a system scan and maybe get a motherboard name. Use Everest Home Edition, and SiSoft Sandra. Give us a readout of hardware listing in both programs. I know you used PCWizard, but its not a good application.
  20. If you can't buy it and its no longer supported, then its abandoware. You might be able to find a free copy of Office 5 if you search the net on abandonware sites. Beware the legality issues, its kind of a gray area. BTW, wouldn't selling your software be a breach of the licensing agreement between the user and the software maker?
  21. You need to learn how to search properly then. Here's a hint: Do a search for "Windows 3.11 Exel" OR "Windows 3.11 Spreadsheets". Google.
