  1. I know Mandarin and by one chance I heard from zhihu.com (for those of you who don't know: it's Chinese counterpart of quora.com) that some simplified Chinese Windows XP users can still receive old Windows updates after SHA-1's switching off. But "can receive old SHA-1 updates" != "support continues and extends to a certain future date". I don't think extended support to 2021 is true for simplified Chinese Windows Vista users residing in China; dunno what source of the information is from. I did comment to some Windows Vista related posts on zhihu.com, that Windows Vista can install Server 2008 "R1" (or "original", if you prefer to call that) updates to receive several years of potential extra support. I do have a Compaq laptop that is used to run Windows Vista Home Basic and it was a simplified Chinese edition in my permanent home in China. However my relative (accompanied with a computer repair guy who commonly believes that "Vista is bad, a bugged OS in MS history and you should replace it") ditched the hard drive and installed an SSD with Windows 7 on it. So I can't test that anymore.

  3. Today I managed to install .NET Framework 4.8 on my VM with Windows Vista Home Basic x64, how did I do it? First to install it use the method previously used with the .NET Framework 4.6.2 and 4.7.x; nothing more than this time the procedure is longer since when starting any application designed for .NET Framework 4.x in Vista an error dialog appears for lack of instructions in kernel32.dll and ole32.dll respectively. In HxD edit the clr.dll file that was the library that calls those instructions, replace clr.dll with the edited version and, surprise! NET Framework 4.8 is compatible with Windows Vista! Even create a small application with Visual Studio in Windows 7 to see if it worked at all and NET Framework 4.8 works correctly in Vista. Instructions for installing NET Framework 4.8 on Vista (you need to have a minimum .NET Framework 4.6.1 installed) 1. With the method of previous versions on this page: https://msfn.org/board/topic/178673-tutorial-how-to-install-net-framework-472-on-windows-vista/ 2. After finishing the installation, replace clr.dll in "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319" and "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319" with the versions in the zip file 3. Do regsvr32 if necessary 4. Restart your Windows Vista 5. NET Framework 4.8 in Windows Vista! Link to download the parch: Download

  5. Hello from Romania! Was lurking MSFN Forums for a few years already, and have already learnt about stuff like the Ultimate Win98 CD (which was incredibly helpful for a handful number of i440LX and VIA693/694 builds) as well as the widely known KernelEX. Love to tinker with retro machines, and as such, have managed to build a broad range of machines. Socket 7, Slot 1, Slot A, Socket 462, Socket 370, you name it. Didn't get a 486 working yet (though I have at least three of them - a DX50, a DX2-66 and some Cyrix that the model escapes my mind now) because of those pesky and nasty barrel batteries, but I do have some rather "exotic" (if you can call them as such) Slot 1 and Slot A builds - one is a Soyo 6BA+IV based Glide machine (with a Voodoo3 no less) and the other is a EpoX EP-7KXA machine sporting a Thunderbird 750MHz (with a nice golden Geforce 4 MX440SE). Am looking forward learning more from your forums, and possibly share some of my findings in matters of retro hardware as well.

  6. Dear @IXOYE vandal-1.1.0-fx.xpi is yet another Firefox-targeting Web Extension that will not install on Serpent, because it's a type of WE called an "id-less" one... I have in the past, over many occasions, explained ad nauseam the "why" and "how-to" install such WEs on Serpent... https://msfn.org/board/search/?&q=id-less&search_and_or=or&sortby=relevancy For a more technical analysis on the "why", https://msfn.org/board/topic/177125-my-browser-builds-part-1/page/147/?tab=comments#comment-1164701 For a more "practical" read, https://msfn.org/board/topic/177125-my-browser-builds-part-1/page/100/?tab=comments#comment-1159013 https://msfn.org/board/topic/180462-my-browser-builds-part-2/page/133/?tab=comments#comment-1189182 perhaps could be of help... Bottom line is, you have to edit the extension's manifest.json file so as to add a gecko-id block; repackage and then it'll install in St52... St52 != FxESR 52.9.0, especially with regards to WE APIs, so installing in St52 won't guarantee perfect functioning... And, please, DO NOT follow the advice given by my friend @ArcticFoxie ; transplanting a Fx profile onto St52 (or, worse, to St55) is a sure recipe for profile corruption, often times beyond repair! People, for the millionth time since I've been a member of this community, FIREFOX 52.9.x and SERPENT 52.9.0 are two different applications that have diverged so much over time, that their profiles are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE anymore (without risk of data corruption); just don't do it! Always start with a fresh St52 profile and only transfer vital parts such as bookmarks and, where applicable, passwords... Re-install crucial extensions as needed...

  8. Its probably BS but if it were true by a small chance it does make one wonder how support was extended by full 4 years extra and that too for only 1 region.

  9. Wikipedia is editable by anyone; that bit you reference, was only added mere hours ago, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Windows_Vista&oldid=1025080050 https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Windows_Vista&diff=prev&oldid=1025080050 however I can't form an opinion on the validity of the added info, obviously only Chinese Vista users might offer a clue on this...

  10. Nothing older than KB4040973 (September 2017)!? There are two possibilities: (1) That particular update (perhaps in combination with the others installed on 1/14) superseded ALL earlier updates for .NET 4.6, including all that were released while Vista was still under extended support. Or else: (2) Windows Update cannot be relied on to update .NET 4.6 on Vista even with the MDL hack. Attempting to investigate (1) quickly produced a headache. There is no KB4040973 in the catalog, however KB4041086 is apparently the same update, however Package Details say it was later replaced (which might be why it isn’t in greenhillmaniac’s post-EOL repository), however it did indeed replace some earlier updates, however the replaced KB numbers don’t match VistaLover’s screenshot above and they skipped June 2017? I’m giving up on this myself.

  11. Certainly your version of Process Explorer. I don't remember where but I have explained in the past in the forum that versions after 16.12 malfunction in Windows XP. Try P.E.version 16.12, if then you get the same situation we will see in detail what to do next. P.S. I deleted because I'm sure you solve. P.S.1 For a more profitable use of P.E. it is better to set the software as in the image below:

  12. My favourite band is Scorpions . I see German bands are quite popular , I'm no exception. Scorpions are a German (Western Germany) rock band formed in 1965 in Hanover by Rudolf Schenker. https://www.the-scorpions.com My favourite Scorpions' albums are : almost all up to 1990 . In 1993 , with the release of their new studio album (recorded in New York) , the sound became distorted . Read here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war I guess the sound studio manager is/was deaf. They didn't need to change their recording studio. Before that the sound is/was amazing , the best albums in the 80's recorded in the Swiss Alps. I do own all of my fav. albums on original CDs , "made in Holland" in the 80's/early 90's.

  14. Somewhat OT, but since you brought this up here... @burd , could you be a sport and do this Vista community some additional good? Please, go to Windows Update => Installed Updates => Sort by "Program" => Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 (x) and then make a list of ALL the updates your restored WU fetched and successfully installed for .NET FW 4.6 ? If possible, you can divide them chronologically into three groups : 1. Till Vista SP2's EOL 2. Till WS2008SP2's EOL 3. Currently installed ones under WS2008SP2 ESU (i.e. including those for Apr 2021) The produced list can then be used to easily fetch the same updates from MUC and update manually a Vista SP2 .NET FW 4.6.1 install ... Thanks in advance to anyone willing to undertake this! Best regards

  15. Things change over time, get really into a band and then later it dies down. Some have a couple great albums and some I could notice that I just like the one or two albums and not everything they made. Metallica fits into this category. Some bands where all of their albums are good but some are just "ok" and I do not care about some albums (as opposed to the Metallica example where some albums are terrible) and a band like this would be Yes or Laibach. But for a favorite band, it would have to be something where everything is good and not just what I have heard like King Crimson or Emerson Lake & Palmer or Giorgio Moroder. And for that title I'd have to say it would have to be Morbid Angel.
