  1. Hello.. I created an account here to thank you for this awesome browser! Used PM years ago (stopped when they dropped support for xp) and stumbled upon this place just a few days ago and glad I did! Working quite well so far! Take good care everyone and glad to be a member of the forum :)

  2. Auto Screen Capture supposedly needs at least Windows 8. It turned out that application doesn't depend on anything that only newer systems have. Here's the fixed version that will happily run on XP/Vista/7 (.NET Framework 4.0 required). These were required code changes.

  3. I thought that the good ReactOS guys were "slow" and (sometimes) a tad bit fixated on the minutiae (said in a friendly way , I know that their resources are scarce), but compared to this Open VMS people here, they definitely seem kids. Of course I am perfectly ignorant of the difficulties involved , and definitely a "hairy reasoner" (and a grumpy one, while at it), but more than two years and the thingy doesn't even boot to print on the screen "Hello, world" Cannot say why exactly, but the apparent pride with which they enthusiastically announce their first two "proof points" somehow makes me cringe. Don't get me wrong, I hope that the remaining difficulties will soon be overcome and that the road map will be respected, but even if everything goes according to plans, we have a full year before the start of the (maybe) availability of the new OS. jaclaz P.S. I am not sure which is the latest-latest roadmap, but I believe it is this one, instead: http://www.vmssoftware.com/pdfs/VSI_Roadmap_20180605.pdf

  4. Sure , but that wouldn't be "MS style". Sometimes I wonder if they have some internal competitions where employers/programmers that manage to (slightly) harass users/customers in the most subtle ways win a prize. There is no doubt whatsoever that the "slightest&subtlest" prize is won every year by the people that write their documentation (or that mantain it) as it is invariably almost accurate while still vague or fragmented enough to lead to misinterpretation. The guys that write the new error messages since 8 (you know the type "An error occurred" or "Something didn't work as expected") try every year to win but surely they are always disqualified for not having understood the "subtle" part in the title of the competition. Programmers sometimes are friends of the documentation guys, a recent example (JFYI ): https://www.forensicfocus.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=16852/ https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/fc85630e-5684-4df6-ad2f-5a128de3deef/260-character-explorer-path-length-limit?forum=windowsgeneraldevelopmentissues jaclaz

  5. If you're still using Windows Vista (like me) and would like to play games with the XBOX One Controller, then you're pretty much out of luck.. Right? No! You can actually install the Windows 7+ XBOX One Controller driver on Windows Vista without modifying anything. You just need to extract the .MSI installer and install the driver via Device-Manager. But you don't need to do all this since i already uploaded it for you.. DOWNLOAD DRIVERS Have fun!

  6. I didn't think it was possible to get the xbox one controller to work on vista, thanks for sharing.

  7. I managed to get the installer to run in Vista, but beyond that the software would not launch, due to missing Win7+ functions: So getting the software to work in Vista would require stubbing calls via a Proxy Stub DLL, similar to what @smeezekitty did to get Adobe Reader DC to work in Vista, or it would require a compatibility layer... both are far beyond my knowledge and ability and it's hardly worth doing it just for Skype since there are far better alternatives, IMO. On another note, I noticed that after nearly 10 years, a new version of HxD Hex Editor has been released, which fully supports Windows Vista, so I have re-added it to the list: SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JULY 21, 2018: Re-added HxD Hex Editor to the list in "System File Viewers/Editors" section. Added ContaCam to "Video & Photo Editing Software" section.

  8. I second what @burd said, thanks GTAGAME for sharing this information! I will have to add it to my new Compatible hardware with Windows Vista thread. I'll be sure to link to your thread and credit you for this

  9. Several people (me including) gather at ryanvm when MSFN goes down to scratch our heads, it is seen as pretty much a sister site, yes (AFAIK).

  10. The only usable version of Windows 10 that exists is the Server 2016/LTSB 2016 variant because (you've guessed it) it had almost 2 years of constant patching. Those versions don't have any UWP processes or telemetry (if tweaked properly) running in the background. They don't suffer from annoying bugs, like basic Windows mouse functions being completely bugged out (7-Zip and even regedit suffer from this in the latest 1803 version)! These kinds of basic usability bugs never seem to get caught by Microsoft unless someone explicitly makes a fuss of it on social media (and even then...) When even Windows can't implement the Windows API properly you know something's f***ed: https://sourceforge.net/p/sevenzip/discussion/45797/thread/e730c709/

  11. And it works, of course! But one must be careful to search all needed strings and replace (using u152 as the old one and u181 as the new one for the sake of this example): "jre1.8.0_152" by "jre1.8.0_181"; "8.0.1520.16" by "8.0.1810.13"; "1.8.0_152-b16" by "1.8.0_181-b13" and "11.152.2" by "11.181.2"... All the needed version numbers are easily findable in the File Properties of java.exe and javacpl.cpl, of course.

  12. (In reply to Jaclaz) Yes, but so far as I can see the ONLY improvement over Windows 8.1 so far in Windows 10 is better ability to manage multiple monitors at different DPI scales. The latest Windows 10 releases don't tend to lose icon locations as often as their predecessors. Other than that, the concept the that OS is to be improved after release is simply not ringing as true as when Microsoft thought developing the next generation operating system was a path to success. Seems to me all they're doing now is just hanging more and more application software all over the kernel. 120 running processes to support an empty desktop? :-O My *LATEST* complaint is that Microsoft is systematically making all the documentation for programming less and less usable. Note, for example, the definitions of the function parameters in this: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/api/winuser/nf-winuser-drawtext Thing is, they're doing this and it doesn't raise a big stink in the world because most folks are users and don't care about such things. But it WILL affect the new applications being developed. Microsoft is systematically - and not surprisingly - forcing people out of "legacy" development. -Noel

  15. You actually don't need to remember even you own name, provided you install Nirsoft's fantabulous WinUpdatesList aka wul. Do give it a try! It's a pity it's not as useful for Windows 7 (not worth installing, in fact), but for XP it's a real must!
