  1. Wrong, it won't change the HTTP/2 Fingerprint (akamai hash), for example. Besides, it will make you unique, so you again gave a bad advice on MSFN.

  2. My grandma, along with hundreds of millions of other users, won't do it. So yeah, it's a new fingerprint standard.

  3. Just so you know, for the future, DirectX11 for video is only Win8 and up, but I won't go into details since it's obviously off-topic here!

  4. Of course it's "less resources" for you simply because Windows XP doesn't support DirectX11, it never did, run DxDiag to see, hence less depth and the weird brightness, there's simply no acceleration when you choose DX11 on XP.

  5. I tested MPC-HC 2.1.2.18 more deeply. Under my hardware conditions, the jetaudio video decoder does not do anything better than the LAV filters. Generally, I like this player but the best of all for Windows XP is still the PotPlayer which is able to play subtitles and lists all available YouTube streams while playing a video so that the user can select their favourite one easily.

  6. Comparing to Celeron, Pentium is of a higher tier, especially if we compare desktop to notebook (Toshiba). Besides, my laptop had 512MB of RAM, it was the highest possible amount for the early 2003. Later I upgraded it to 1GB of DDR ram. That was the max. amount the chipset allowed.

  7. My Windows XP Professional received the SP3 service pack as soon as it was released. My system was already fully updated in 2014 with all updates after SP3. From 2014 to 2019, my system received all POSReady updates. My 32-bit CPU is a Pentium 4 with only 1.5 GB SD-RAM. So very weak hardware. And yet my system runs excellently. By no means worse than when SP2 was still in use , but much more up-to-date.

  8. I'm obviously not an XP expert anymore, if I ever was, but something tells me, those updates are no longer that important anymore. The times and the threats, they were written to deal with, are long gone. When was the last update for XP, a decade ago? I even find the first release of XP64 to be faster than the second one, so I maybe port MPC-HC on it someday.

  9. This Service pack 3 is heavily bloated and slow. It was always the case with my Celeron Toshiba (2003) or any other right era hardware I used. Possibly later, when the first Core Quad came out, it became less apparent. I can relate to those people who prefer to run MPC-HC on SP2.

  10. BTW, it wasn't meant offensive. It was just an observation I made when reading your comments. I'm someone who likes to say what I think, sometimes very directly. And as for Rammstein, I'm sorry to say that I've never been a fan.

  11. I assume all your random crashes are related to the already reported gkmedias.dll issue. Right? If so, you can replace this file with the previous one without having to completely revert to the previous version of New Moon 28. I mention this as I have been testing the new release the last hours. After replacing the gkmedias.dll file, this new release of New Moon 28 seems to be working fine so far.

  12. Confirmed. The gkmedias.dll file (8.496.128 Bytes) is faulty. I replaced it by the previous gkmedias.dll file (8.623.104 Bytes), and the error is history. I can confirm the same problem in the most recent release of New Moon 28 (2024-10-11). I replaced gkmedias.dll file (9.862.144 Bytes) by the previous one (9.989.632 Bytes), and the error is history.

  16. Sad news for everyone here at MSFN. One of our forum supervisors, Dencorso, passed away on October 24th, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Apparently he was still upbeat and optimistic about the future a few weeks before he passed. My memories of Den go back quite a few years. He was incredibly helpful to me with technical problems, which is what this board is all about of course, initially mainly with Windows 98, and latterly with Windows XP. He was immensely supportive too when I first became a moderator here, something I will always be grateful for. He was definitely one of the good guys, and will be sorely missed here. Please add your memories here of working with Den. Thanks, Dave.

  17. Took me a year and then some to find this out. Maybe I shouldn't have. Would've thought everybody was here, as always, him included. Would've thought everything's just fine. But there it is... One of us - another one - has left for a while; just for a little Eternity and a day, and then who knows, maybe there will be a full board up there somewhere... Useless to repeat all the good things that have already been thought of, written, and/or spoken about Den. We all know how he was and what he did here. We will all miss him dearly. May he rest in peace! 🙏

  18. It can, if someone makes a mistake, or simply doesn't know what his OS real capabilities are, that user tried to run the player in DirectX11 mode, that is only Win8 and up, the player ignored that setting and switched off the acceleration completely, thus resulting in a poorer picture quality. The only thing that works on XP is DXVA version 1.0. Addition, obviously a DXVA supported GPU is needed, too!

  19. Most probably nobody will bother to test their ports for Windows XP without SP, without SP fully updated, with SP1, with SP1 fully updated, with SP2, with SP2 fully updated, with SP3, with SP3 fully updated and with SP3 + all POSReady updates, fully updated. Tests under SP3 are logically the most likely.

  20. I found the system requirements for MPC-HC 1.7.13 on the old, abandoned homepage: https://mpc-hc.org/faq/#what-are-the-requirements-for-mpc-hc Due to the fact that MPC-HC 2.1.2.18 is a port for Windows XP, it is completely unclear whether it has ever been tested under SP2 or is supported there at all.
    1 point
  21. I don't know what the exact system requirements of MPC-HC 2.1.2.18 are with regard to Windows XP, but many programmes require Service Pack SP3 to be installed if they are compatible with XP at all. Thus, stucking at SP2 doesn't really make much sense and is not really a good idea, IMHO.

  22. But there's something else I keep asking myself. Why is your Windows XP 32-bit running SP2? After SP2 came SP3. And then hundreds of updates for SP3 and additionaly hundreds more POSReady updates. This means that in total (SP3 included) presumably at least 1000 updates are missing from a Windows XP SP2 system.

  23. Yes, a great tool. I also have been using it for years but an older professional version. And there is a further one from Nirsoft called BlueScreenView.

  30. I am so sad. He was a great person. I knew him since my first days on MSFN, many, many years ago, and besides the public interactions on the board we had a lot of correspondence via PM's, both on computing and on a whole range of different topics, from cinema and TV to art and linguistics (he could read and understand very well Italian and I can understand a very little Portuguese, we had a common interest in Latin - as root of both languages - and we often exchanged opinions on these and many other things), I considered him a friend. I will greatly miss him and our exchanges. Besides his great work in helping and advising other people on technical matters, he was always polite and just (as a moderator), while often managing to keep a veil of humour in his posts. He told me about his illness, describing it as a "a quite mean cancer", from the tone of his latest messages he was fighting fiercely against it, and was hoping to defeat it only one month before, at the end of september. May he R.I.P. jaclaz

  33. I personally disagree with this sentiment. We are a like-minded community with a common interest. We are allowed to stray every once in a while, who freakin' cares, go off-topic AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE as far as I'm concerned. Within reason, of course, let's not throw politics in the mix, so to speak, but come on, who freakin' cares about so-called off-topic setting in once in a while! I actually sometimes feel like I'm talking to a Holy Roller thumping his Bible at me whenver somebody feels they have to proclaim such an "apology" for going "off-topic". But I digress... And, um, "apolgies for going off-topic"...

  36. Search the registry for any entries relating to the mypal executable (presumably mypal.exe). Just delete them and it should come good. Back up the registry first of course, just in case! That's one of the problems if you can't uninstall properly, the program's registry entries are still there.
