I stopped at early 5 and don't even know what they looked like later. I only use software that support dark themes (for vampires). By any chance, what was the last good looking one for XP, without Windows 10 UI, but with dark theme? I see 5.5 from @Saxon's screenshot is fully white, which won't do for me. Thank you!3 points

yeah, a major nuisance and one of the reasons my "old posts" will show DEAD images.2 points

Looks like 360Chrome 13.5 doesn't display mediamarkt.de properly either. It displays in Edge 94 (the oldest "modern" browser at my disposal). They are not needed anymore after RegExp updates. Man, these people are nuts. A new (smart) TV was bought couple of weeks back and its web browser (Chromium 85) is obsolete straight out of the shop. Secondary function, but still, these lyrics come to mind: My new computer's got the clocks, it rocks But it was obsolete before I opened the box You say you've had your desktop for over a week Throw that junk away, man, it's an antique Your laptop is a month old, well that's great If you could use a nice, heavy paper weight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpMvS1Q1sos Released in 1999 xD2 points

Hello @UCyborg! Thank you very much for sharing your "mediamarkt.de | saturn.de quick fix" userscript! I tried it in New Moon 28, Serpent 52 and 55. Although there are issues with images in the item lists as already reported by @VistaLover, it works and makes these websites readable again. In Palefill 1.27, martok also made fixes for mediamarkt's login area. Nevertheless, I hope there will be a solution of all these issues one day coded in NM and SP themselves. BTW, I am a customer of Media Markt's online shop and I am glad to be able to use this site in NM and SP again. Thanks again!2 points

Thanks indeed. We do have some very helpful members here at MSFN that spend a great deal of time in assisting with enquiries. Unfortunately, we also have a growingly large number of members that will call those helpful posts long-winded or refer to them as A4. Guess we just have to take the good with the bad and learn to live and let live. Or something like that...2 points

Hi @WSC4, welcome to the MSFN forums (the last "stronghold of XP-diehards" , as someone in another forum called it), best greetings to Oz ... In general, as posted already by another member, it's not a good idea to "try" financial services in "legacy" browser engines & OSes, because these institutions usually expect the "latest and greatest" in both departments (to generate a "sense" of security for their clients...); but we'll try to help, if we can; then, it's up to you to follow any offered workaround ... For starters, when I load the posted link in my FxESR 52 copy, I get a "warning" banner: Since you wrote already that FxESR 52 "works" for you, I'm inclined to disregard this "update" warning ; however, following the "Learn more" link it contains will land one on: https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/online-banking/support-faqs/supported-browsers/ Reading that article immediately gives the impression it hasn't been updated (pun intended) for quite a while; Fx>=52 ? Chrome >=58? In the OS entries, no mention of Win8.1/10/11 (?); if it's minOS requirements, then it's obvious they don't support WinXP anymore (but you said FxESR 52 worked in your WinXP SP2 64-bit machine ) ... If we take that table "seriously", then UXP-based browsers (NM28, St52, etc.) have engines far superior to the one FxESR 52 has... Based on my small analysis above, and without having any failure details from you (Web/Browser/Error Consoles of NM28), first thing I'd suggest is a SSUAO (site-specific-user-agent-override) on NM28 targeting that bank, in the hope they're simply rejecting NM28 based on its default user-agent string (a practice known as UA-sniffing) ... If you had been lurking here "silently" for more than a year, perhaps you're already familiar with the procedure; if not, then: 1. In NM28, open a new tab and in the URLbar type about:config - press enter, and then press the "I promise to be careful! button"; you should now be inside the advanced preferences interface 2. Place your cursor inside the existing entries and right-click, invoking the context menu 3. from the CM entries, select New -> String 4. in the preference name field, enter general.useragent.override.westpac.com.au and click OK 5. in the string value field (in the second pop-up), enter Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/52.0 and click OK Done! You should now have created a new entry that looks as below: Restart your NM28 browser (just for good measure ), then try your "bank" site anew; this time, the bank's software will think you're visiting with Fx52 on Win8.1 ... Tell us how it went! Cheers ...2 points

Correction - I see the issue. My setup is "unsetting" some of the position: absolute's and that fixes the overlaps and also restores "missing" images. I didn't need to "fix" any CSS Reset, I only "unset" <picture> elements' position: absolute.1 point

Facebook is heavily dependent on IP, and will load its features (or not) accordingly. We don't know which country you're from, if you're from Russia, Iran, or North Korea, some (or all!) servers will surely be blocked, so it won't show you everything, if all. Try VPN. For me it works fine, I can't show the screen, I don't have an account, but I see the start page just fine, That said, I don't live in any of those countries. So try VPN and report back.1 point

You are most welcome ; of course, it was impossible for either of us to know that a post on that same subject was about to be submitted imminently by another member, while in the process of putting the "finishing touches" on an already composed post of ours ; so, actually, nothing to apologise for ... Since you are a new member here, I was uncertain of the level of your "tech know-how", so I was somewhat more verbose in my reply to you; this post of mine, while proven unnecessary towards the resolution of your predicament, might still serve other people with similar issues ... Best regards .1 point

Does "Use another browser" count? Just for the contrast how broken it is and that the "New CSS Reset" is actually the smallest problem...1 point

It all depends on the place where you live and your ISP speed, for me it's instant, which is no wonder, since Holland has one of the fastest ISP providers, I'm sure the same is for @Dave-H. Try to test with uBlock ON!1 point

OK Mister Pedantic, they didn't actually load 'instantly'! They certainly didn't take over 30 seconds to load as was cited earlier though.1 point

To be picky (as I am) it depends on which GUI path you take, the same thread you mentioned shows also the Settings->Recovery->Advanced startup uses "firmware" like the command line, and BTW the "Advanced Options" -> "UEFI firmware settings" you are referencing is "backwards" (it only tells you that the PC will restart in the "final" screen). It's 2:1, command line+GUI1=firmware vs. GUI2=UEFI firmware, democracy at its best . All is normal and the usual way the good MS guys are historically used to mis-label things in their OS's (and documentation). As a side note, the given link: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5831-boot-uefi-firmware-settings-inside-windows-10-a.html says, (last choice about shutdown /r /fw) : so maybe it is not just UEFI, but also BIOS (i.e. firmware is more appropriate) It would need to be tested (by someone with two installs, one in BIOS and one in UEFI or with similar machines set in the two modes to be able to make a comparison), I think that the feature uses some specific UEFI (surely described on one of the more than 2,200 pages of the specifications) parameter/switch/whatever but for all I know it could simply stuff the keyboard buffer with F2's (or whatever key is used to access the firmware at boot time). jaclaz1 point

CAupdater - An alternative Root Certificate Updater There is an alternative tool for updating Root Certificates in Windows XP. I totally forgot to mention this here as a single program. The creator was @Thomas S.. It is called CAupdater and is available in version 1.0.0.1. I use it for years, and it works great. Here is the link to its original post: It is also embedded in @Thomas S.'s HTTPSProxy package which can be downloaded in the section 11.2.1.2. Downloads related to HTTPSProxy of my main article "ProxHTTPSProxy and HTTPSProxy in Windows XP for future use". In his original post linked above, the download link of CAupdater as a single archive file doesn't work anymore. Therefore, I will provide here a download link of this single archive file as soon as possible. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

To force the installer of DreamMail Pro 6.6.6.2 to use English instead of Chinese as the installer language, I updated my small loader that does this when it calls up the setup program. ... Leave that envvar empty/don't use it at all, so that your ISP connection is used DIRECTLY for the cert revocation check (which is performed over plain HTTP); in any case, only the secure connections the game attempts should be redirected to the TLS proxy, i.e. ONLY the HTTPS_PROXY envvar should be used... Just my 2c, of course... Agreed! Do not use http_proxy=localhost:8081 and try again! BTW, the address https://ms.kartkrew.org/ms/api does not exist, neither in IE8 nor in New Moon 28, i.e. leads to the well-known 404 error: Same error in your logs!1 point

Can you demonstrate how to get this working with ProxHTTPSProxy? Or show your settings inside SocksCap64? It doesn't have a HTTPS proxy setting, only HTTP, which doesn't work for me. I am trying to use programs that do use HTTPS but don't use the system proxy server (including programs that use libcurl.dll, or have curl static compiled into the executable). Simply updating root certificates and enabling TLS 1.2 in IE is not enough, I get a mis-matched hostname certificate error when trying to run programs that use curl (or go on certain sites with IE when ProxHTTPSProxy isn't enabled, for that matter). Also, redirecting requests from curl to plain HTTP is not always possible because the server does not serve plain HTTP and only uses a 301 redirect to HTTPS regardless of the URL. Hello @Snowshoe! I tested SocksCap64 with some browsers and it worked perfectly. You can try any other application but there might be some which won't work properly with SocksCap64. It's always trial and error. Anyway! Next time I'm at my desktop computer, I'll take some screenshots of my settings and post it here for you.1 point

Don't quite understand what do you mean. Users of old OSes are already having problems with absense of security updates. Adding closed source hacks makes this problem only worse. Maybe you are talking about making patches open source only when they are completely ready?1 point

It's a very long time ago, I used IE6. When IE7 came out, I upgraded to that version and later to IE8. Anyway! As far as I can remember, it has something to do with the signing process of certificates (SHA-1 vs. SHA256), but I have to check that once again if more time is available. Try instead ProxHTTPSProxy 1.3a! You can find it in the section 11.1. Archived Downloads (obsolete) in the first post of this thread. The more recent proxies such as ProxHTTPSProxy 1.5 and up are too "modern" for the old IE6. But actually, you should upgrade to IE8 in any case, only if possible, of course.1 point

LOL! We used to have two types of 'round pin' plugs when I was a kid, 5A ones for lower rated stuff, and 15A ones for heavy stuff, the latter were really big and heavy! I think the idea behind the present 1960s replacement 'square pin' plugs (the pins aren't actually square of course, but that's what they were called!) was that they were powerful enough but light enough not to need two different types. They were fine for the heavy stuff like electric fires, but not too big and heavy to use for the lighter stuff like table lamps. Whether they got the compromise right is a matter of opinion of course! The other plus point was that we got rid of reversible two pin plugs and sockets, which could be dangerous with the 'live chassis' TVs and radios which were still around at the time! I don't mind the European standard ones, but the American standard 'low current' plugs and sockets always seem really flimsy to me! Anyway, this is completely off-topic!1 point

British, of course ! Brits conqured the world, there's nothing else to add. Not to mention it's convenient. The only thing I don't 100% like is their wall plugs. Too brutal, too big. Hello , I'm having a really hard time understanding what are you trying to suggest to this fella by saying this ? It means he just needs to obey any "directive" ? Of course , I'm sorry in advance , if I made a wrong assumption . Though , you may want to know that directives (even federal) are not federal laws . https://www.dailyleader.com/2016/06/02/myers-federal-directive-is-not-law/ And this is regarding EU directives in particular. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directive_(European_Union) "Directives normally leave member states with a certain amount of leeway as to the exact rules to be adopted..." So again , directives are not federal laws. And , as a citizen , he supposed to obey federal laws . Let him write to the bank and demand to show the >federal< law , which clearly states that this form of identification is required.1 point

The goal of this thread is to build a complete archive for the official updates, hotfixes and utilities of Windows 9x and NT 4 in all languages. I started to collect them in 2010 but unfortunately due to the sickness of laziness and the busy life of being a student, work was stopped after the English updates and the updates in other languages are not available anymore when the work resume in early 2017. Have tried to salvage them via hotfix request service before they shut it down but sadly only a few of them can be saved, most the updates from 2003 to 2006 were exclusive to the Windows Update site of 98, 98 SE and ME and only stored on the servers for v3 and v4 Update site, although some of them are probably still online right now, you can't grab them unless you know the exact hash value of them, and you can no longer access the Update Catalog from the update site as both of them have been decommissioned since mid-2011. Also for NT 4, the updates are available for download from the Download Center but most of the files and pages have been taken offline in 2015. Link to the my collection archive: https://mega.nz/folder/PGxXyQDR#4_BX8FWdQkMlY53DkGbAQQ There are two root folders, important and optional, the important folder contains the critical updates which were offered by the Windows Update v3 and v4 sites back when they online, meanwhile the optional folder consists of updates, utilities and hotfix that were available from the product homepages from the Wayback Machine as well as other updates which were not classified as critical. Due to the amount of NT 4 updates, a dedicated folder has been created for English updates. The English updates of 98, 98 SE and ME from the Windows Update Catalog are also included within the Important\WU\v4 directory. All the files are taken from MS or the Wayback Machine. Here is the speadsheet that listed the updates included in the archive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16Uai21TIyIsnSrMU5jC7zlQ_JPd98Ugd/view?usp=sharing When the character 'd' is marked with the updates, it's done and included. For any contribution, it's marked with 'c'. If you have or you know someone have any remaining bits of them which are missing form the archive, please kindly share them or try to ask them to share, I will create an index below for any contribution. In addition, I have recorded some short videos when browsing the v3 and v4 update site back in 2010, if you are interested please head to this playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFqzRmfBPvV-nTjtsGn6USNqAUA8-Nvxk. Any comments and suggestions are welcome. Thank you!1 point
