Any place we would go to for refuge cannot be a place we just pick in this thread, but a place where the forum owner or admins allow us to go. That being said, MDL is not a place we can have an official relationship with due to the nature of the content they post there. RyanVM was a good place in the past as there was enough user crossover (particularly staff and older users) and Reboot.pro is a site similar in that way at least. They aren't always particularly reliable either and still somehow do not use HTTPS which may turn off a lot of people. The MSFN twitter was the first place I looked (out of habit for when a site isn't working) but it really hasn't been viable for things like this. With the exception to the tweet made 4 hours ago, there hasn't been anything done with that account since 2019. The only other official place I am aware of is the Steam group but it isn't utilized afaik.3 points

So what did happen this past weekend?3 points

I posted on Reboot.pro about it, but since Xper doesn't post anywhere, there isn't really a place to get reliable info relating to the server. There just are places we can congregate temporarily if need be.3 points

@Tripredacus @Dave-H Why do mods tolerate circular rep farming on social boards? Why do social boards add to rep on a technical forum? Asking for a friend who doesn't want to make enemies.2 points

Advance Notice: since there is no notable upstream changes, no new UXP based binaries will be released tomorrow.2 points

I guess forum software was updated, which will surely be appreciated by the fans of the old web browsers here. /s Behold, insert-inline-end CSS property is used under the Topics section now to align replies counter, which is not supported by the latest Windows XP supporting Chrome.2 points

Probably that checkbox is only relevant if you actually use chrome://inspect page on the regular basis. When the checkbox is enabled and the page is opened, the browser establishes ADB connection with connected Android smartphone, that's how you debug websites from the computer that are displayed on the smartphone in Chrome browser. Can't test it currently since I don't have Chrome on my phone, but ADB connection prompt does appear on the phone.2 points

I looked at the git mirror of the official Gecko repository and they haven't made any commits to remove Windows 7/8.x compatibility yet.2 points

I can still read the MSFN page on Facebook without logging in, I just have to close the login prompt. A login nag remains at the bottom of the page, but it doesn't stop you reading the content.2 points

Despite saying they would end support for Windows 7 and 8.1 with v115, the newly released nightly version of 116 still works on Windows 8.1. I also tested it with Windows 7 Compatibility Mode and it seems fine so far. The system requirements haven't changed either. However, since this is a very new and fresh build, it will obviously take some time to introduce new stuff that will eventually break support for them. As far as I remember Firefox 53 builds didn't work on XP, but work perfectly on Vista. Vista's compatbility was broken with v54. I'm curious when and if Mozilla will break the compatibility for 7 and 8.1 or if they just "declare" them EOL but won't change much from the inside. Time's gonna tell us. Nevertheless, here is proof: imgur.com/a/wUABk3Q [Edit: I don't know why they've put an 18+ warning but dont worry ;)]2 points

There is a Facebook page too. Personally I would prefer that if we go that route. I have always kept well clear of Twitter, never had an account, but I am active on Facebook.2 points

I don't think that 'fix' by xper, which was just removing a news page which had been hacked and had spam inserted into it, had anything to do with the outage. In fact during the outage the news pages were still online, it was only the forum pages which were inaccessible.2 points

Hmm ... interesting! And they don't show racism towards Vista! I mean, Vista is not in the "older OS" section. And what's with the ethics there? No foreigners trying to correct proper British spelling?2 points

I don't think we should use a board that's specific to any strict matter. eclipse.cx is for Vampire films fans only. https://www.tvinsider.com/show/the-twilight-saga-eclipse/ Another general PC system support forum would be a wise decision as our temporary refuge.2 points

Oh, I see, at first I mistakenly thought it was about migrating to another forum if MSFN is offline, but after reading the main topic post carefully, I realized that now. Sorry for that!2 points

My Digital Life (MDL) is a great forum with less restrictions than others. I am a member there since 2009 when it was still named forums.mydigitallife.info and not forums.mydigitallife.net. But more in the form of a passive member than an active one. Already posted comments can be edited at any time. I mention that because there are many forums with a lot of restrictions such as Malwarebytes Forums or Windows XP Forums. And I agree to @Dave-H, the Chit Chat subforum would be the right place if MDL is wanted.2 points
-
That would seem like a good fit. I'm not talking about us continuing all our thread conversations there, all we need is a thread, probably in their 'Chit Chat' section, where we can discuss the status of the MSFN forum as a whole. As long as they don't object to us discussing what they would probably consider to be a 'rival forum' there of course!2 points

RyanVM has indeed gone I'm afraid. We will need to find somewhere else to stay in contact if there are problems with MSFN in the future. Anyone any suggestions? Preferably not company forums.2 points

And - just for the record - at each and every update/new version the good guys managed to bork either links or contents of CODE tags (or both). jaclaz2 points

It used to be very good, but has gotten worse over time. And bloated along the way, reminds me of a certain operating system.2 points

I'm not too sure about that. Once you hang around a forum long enough, you know who is helpful and who is here just for "attention", for "look at me", for "I'm always right and I'm here to prove it to the world", et cetera. When I first joined, I certainly didn't look at that "rep number" to gauge how accurate or helpful replies to any questions were (or were not). And those that don't hang around long enough to witness just who among us is helpful and who among us is not, how can we assume that short-term visitor was gauging anything whatsoever by any "rep number". Granted, I so heavily custom-style-sheet this forum that I haven't seen a "rep number" in over two years. edit - I wonder if a "solution" to the high-frequency posters (which seems is what this thread is mainly discussing [I for one "dislike" visiting the "unread" or "active" link and have to scroll through all of the "clutter"], I wonder if just limiting the number of posts that members can do within an hour or day is the "solution"? I mean, I know I often post "often", but the "clutter" threads are on a whole different "level".2 points

Agreed. That has been a big nuisance of late. But I am also reminded of a year or so ago when we had "two" forum members that always liked each other's posts, no matter how "useful" or unuseful the posts actually were. It was rumored that the "two" forum members was actually only ONE PERSON "liking" their own posts just for the sake of that USELESS "reputation". To the point of even "yelling at" OTHER forum members for not "liking" their posts when this "person" liked any other forum member's posts. It's a "generation thing", I suspect. I have no interest in "social media" web sites but MOST of them all "thrive" on the "like" button and how many "followers" the user is able to "collect". So yes, unfortunate, but we have members here at this forum that carry that "Instagram", "Twitter", "Facebook", et cetera "look at me, I have 2000 followers" mentality herein and falsely think it "means something".2 points

Thanks Dave I joined to represent my friend who's too aspie to raise "trouble" in public when something upsets them. This is mainly under General Discussion, it's hard to miss if you look. My friend says the ones doing this aren't bad people, but they give so much rep in their chat circles that it's unfair to those who develop and help with technical issues. They say if you compare the leaderboard to some time ago it's very obvious that these days active chatters are on the top and their scores are many times higher compared to developers and solution people. That's fair if we assume rep is popularity. Here we have a technical forum so people assume lots of rep means knowledgeable person and you can trust their information more. You're a veteran here so you know who people are regardless of rep but consider this for example. When a newbie comes in and gets tips from one of these high social rep people, they'll assume it's good advice and try it. They can waste a lot of time and run into problems with that "help", because these people's rep is not based on knowledge. Many specialized forums have rep disabled on social boards to avoid these sorts of problems. Turning off all rep would be too much because then there's no indication of people's usefulness.2 points

Well that should be the same driver as the I225-V mod I did that works so idk what the issue is. Maybe you could force the I217 driver or similar.1 point

I am aware that Malwarebytes 4.x versions have achieved better test scores in recent years, but I’m not sure how that is relevant to Windows XP (or Vista), since you are stuck with 5-year-old version 3.5.1 and hoping they won’t stop providing definitions signed with insecure SHA-1. I’m beginning to think in terms of blocking your content.1 point

My Digital Life forum does look like a good option, but the thing is, it doesn't have a Web Browsers forum. https://forums.mydigitallife.net/1 point

I don't think we should use a board that's specific to any operating system. There is still an active XP forum of course! Another general PC system support forum would be best, assuming that MSFN isn't now the last one standing!1 point

There may be other reasons. I have been recommending Norton to anyone with a too fast machine for years, it does (did) miracles in slowing down to a crawl any machine, including high end ones. jaclaz1 point

The latest Microsoft Office 365 (v2307) also works on 8.1 I'm surprised there haven't been compatibility issues since EOL was with 2301/2302 For Windows 7, compatibility was broken with v2003 already1 point

We use some "laser weld" machines. We're up to four of them on the factory floor. While #3 is a decade old, #4 is only a year old. All four run XP. My dentist office's X-Ray is ran by XP. At least the portion where they show my the pictures which are standard computer images and not some "black transparent film" that they just shine light through from behind it.1 point
-
That last migration I worked on (2 years ago) at a medical device manufacturer, there were still a handful of XP systems there. They were used to operate some laser systems. The older models used software that worked with XP and the newer models had software that worked with Windows 7, and the even newer models supported Windows 10. These laser systems cost more than a house, so I am sure there is some financial reason why they had to use different versions. Maybe the manufacturer is at fault there, who knows.1 point

Oh, so "we"'re no longer speaking for the entire MSFN, are "we"? That was fast. Now "we"'re just doing more drama, "public shaming" and pretending that I didn't already say what I want or more importantly what my friend would like to see. It's totally your fiction that me and my friend are "angry" with these people or don't have enough empathy or want whatever your clean techno forum is supposed to mean. I've seen no one saying that people can't talk and support each other through life problems here but it makes no sense to gut the rep system in the process. Anything they can "say" with giving rep they can say with words during their chatting. The reason those boards are called general discussion is because they're peripheral to what this forum is about. There's so much social media everywhere and it's a waste to turn this board into that too. If rep from this periphery overwhelms rep for merit from all technical boards, something is seriously wrong with the system. If these people deliberatly seek to overwhelm the rest of the board in this way then they're not as gentle as you say because then it's like a coup. If it's not deliberate but they honestly think they're entitled to many times more rep than people like @Humming Owl or @NotHereToPlayGames or @roytam1 and many others who do very importand work here for free then I think something is wrong with their value system. I just mentioned some names my friend gave me as examples and there are many others. If they don't think they're entitled to more rep than those people then they can at least stop giving it to each other for saying the sky is blue. You do understand that, don't you? It's very magnanimous that you're not willing to be a moderator when no one is willing to make you one. I know you didn't miss the point of "wannabe moderator". I can't wait to hear details about how I would stab the mods in the back after apologizing for making impossible demands. You can get extra points if you can do it without name calling and buzzwords like agenda or Communism or ChinoRussia. @AstroSkipper Well said!1 point

People seem to vote for controversial claims, sometimes very expressively laid out with ranting, to which they agree. On modern forums where the thread itself gets voted for, I feel discourage to make a post because the opinion of the crowd is difficult to predict. It is a social suicide to make an unpopular claim, even if it is articulated calmly. I usually don't bother to open a heavy website to press the like button. Sometimes I do it to acknowledge that I've read what the other person had to say, but don't have anything further to add.1 point

Yes there is an easy way but there is not reason to do it. Better would be to lock one or the other (or both)1 point
