  1. Well I rang Sky today, and got pretty much the answer I expected. They couldn't help me using an obsolete e-mail client, which is fair enough, but like most e-mail providers now they seem to think that if the e-mails are working OK in webmail, that's all OK. They don't expect people to be using anything else now, and seem to be very unwilling to support anything else. Even if there is a problem with a current e-mail client like Outlook, they really don't want to know. I guess I'm a dinosaur for wanting my e-mails to be saved actually on my machine, and not only "in the cloud"! They said they couldn't tell me if any changes were made to the broadband system last week, because they're not given that information themselves, and there was no-one that a normal customer could speak to who might have that information. As the change, if there was one, would almost certainly have been security related, I guess that's fair enough. Anyway, I then tried a few more tests, including resetting my router to its defaults. I hadn't ever changed much anyway, only the wi-fi ID and the wi-fi channel. I also reset ProxHTTPSProxy again. I was getting connection error problems and was directed to go to the Sky broadband reconnection page, which seems to work and restore things, and then suddenly I found things were working again! The e-mails are now loading with a couple of seconds delay instead of two minutes, as they were before. I have absolutely no idea why it would have come good, but I'm just glad that it has! Whether it will stay that way remains to be seen of course. I'll let you all know! Thanks for all the help as always. Cheers, Dave.

  2. - boot to 9x normal mode, - make W2KDISTR folder on ur 9x fat32 partition, - copy I386 folder from W2K setup disk to W2KDISTR, - make W9XBAK folder on ur 9x fat32 partition, - copy ur C:\IO.SYS COMMAND.COM MSDOS.SYS CONFIG.SYS AUTOEXEC.BAT to W9XBAK, - reboot to safe/plain/pure/clean msdos mode command prompt only, - rename ur 9x WINDIR to MYW9X, - delete ur MSDOS.SYS CONFIG.SYS AUTOEXEC.BAT - reboot machine, - cd W2KDISTR\I386, - run WINNT.EXE - in started w2k installer, select ur fat32 part to install, and say NO FORMAT, - if installer ask u for install to C:\MYW9X or C:\WINDOWS - force install to C:\WINNT - do installation to final, check, that ur w2k work normal (it "highly likely" that u get non-work EHCI USBs... this can fix later), - copy ur backed IO.SYS COMMAND.COM from W9XBAK to C:\ (with repl if need) - open C:\BOOT.INI in notepad, - find section and string [Boot Loader] timeout=30 Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT change "Default=" string to Default=C:\ - find section and string [Operating Systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000" add under this C:\="Microsoft Windows 98" - reboot machine, - on any next boot, now u will asked for select OS, - if u do all properly - u now will boot to 9x by default, - and now u must see pure MSDOS 7 prompt, - copy ur backed MSDOS.SYS CONFIG.SYS AUTOEXEC.BAT from W9XBAK to C:\ (with repl if need) - rename MYW9X to ur old WINDIR, - reboot again and check dualboot function...

  4. You can try making MS bring back support for Windows 98 or XP with the same success rate. Google does what is good for them, not for us. Forcing you to use their browser (and upgrade the hardware if needed) is good for them. Same with any other major company.

  5. I mean - why is it any more stupid then any other OS they've dropped support for? XP wasn't supported for much further past its EOS... And, at this point, most hardware already has stopped support for 7, usually long ago thanks to microsofts meddling in 2017/18. Vista was more or less lumped into XPs EOS for nvdia as it had not much market share. Windows 8 is the vista here. I see nothing going on with this that doesn't make sense.

  6. I quit bying Nvidia in early 2014 (when they removed CSAA for no reason). And I was a loyal customer for 20 years and bought only the top of the line. Folks need to learn how to use their purchasing power.

  7. @Gansangriff , not sure if it's on-topic , but since you've started , I agree... I'm a simple guy , so my plans for the retirement are rather simple too. 1 - I'm gonna find a quiet place to live , but not far from a medical facility , just in case , nowadays it won't be easy , I guess. 2 - I'll buy an Opel Olympia Deluxe (4-door) sedan 1938 , I actually owned this very Opel in the 90's (which I got from my grandfather) , but it had 2 doors only and I always wanted the 4-door variant. https://cdn.nettiauto.com/live/2020/01/23/8184165c7df0d21c-large.jpg If I won't be able to find the Olympia one , I'll switch to Opel Kadett K38. For those who are wondering , it is a simplified Olympia from the same year . https://www.vccsturm.cz/sites/www.vccsturm.cz/files/renovace/o/p/opel_kadett_k38_spezial_0.jpg https://uploads.carandclassic.co.uk/uploads/cars/opel/13726308.jpg 3 - And this one is my dream car , if I will have enough money for permits and restoration , which won't be easy to obtain, as one may guess. A nice multi-purpose car . Convenient for big families and off-road driving. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/53/28/86/532886aed64161085baab132cbb266f6.jpg http://www.casmodels.org/uploads/5/5/1/1/5511257/1151113.jpg P.S. All cars will be repainted to FELDGRAU.

  8. I'd have hope if this was a Windows 10 problem but it's really not. It's everywhere, if you want to make all the money, ads, spyware, free as in cost, Whatever as a Service, etc is the business model, google, apple , facebook, gaming companies, everyone is doing it, and as long as this stays we'll never get a proper operating system again (other than ones not controlled by corporations like linux). Windows 11 will just have a lot more of everything we hate in 10. More ads, more "telemetry", even more restrictive like Mac, it's our PC now you use it the way we tell you to or we make your life hell. Also it's obvious that whatever they develop and name it, it will be just an easy cashgrab bc they know it works. Couldn't care less, it's micro$oft, i know what to expect. Windows is dead.

  9. OK, finally some progress! I took my netbook to a local restaurant and connected to their wi-fi. On running IE8 on XP (it's a dual boot machine) I went to the http version of the Sky logo. It loaded instantly, as everyone else here seems to have found! I didn't change anything, brought the machine home, connected to my wi-fi, did the same test and IE8 just timed out with a "cannot display the webpage" after about a two minute delay. So, it looks as if something has changed on my broadband connection, which is also from Sky. I rebooted the router, no difference of course. I can't see anything relevant in the router's settings. Something must have changed though overnight on the 2/3rd June. It was working the previous night and not working the following morning. I don't know where to go from here. If I ring Sky technical support and tell them I'm using IE8 on Windows XP, and with an e-mail client that hasn't been updated since 2006, they won't want to know! This is now off-topic for this thread of course, but has anyone any suggestions what might have happened with my internet connection to cause this? The symptom mainly seems to be that there is a problem getting images from some servers. If I display a Sky e-mail for instance, there is a delay of aboiut two minutes with a white box, then everything suddenly appears except for the Sky logo at the top of the message. After about another minute, the logo suddenly appears. There is no activity in the ProxHTTPSProxy console until the elements appear, at which point the green success lines are suddenly all printed. Some e-mails from other sources display completely immediately fine as they always did. Others only display the text elements immediately, with no or only some images. If I wait about two minutes (yes, it really is that long!) the missing images all suddenly appear. Any suggestions very gratefully received, as my normal e-mail reading system is now unusable. Thanks, Dave.

  10. here house prices been inflating a lot in since joining euro and switching away from finnish mark. Before house costing 1 million was luxury level house, nowadays even "average sized" house can be 400 000+ depending area. Friend who built his house with back in early 2000 and sold it few years ago got 5x what he used to build and maintain it. Also price of food, living etc been going up due taxes and euro course, while most of salaries been going down. Atleast I am lucky to have decent income and wont live on most expensive areas on south Finland. Also rents have not affected too badly yet where I live Likely I will never be able to afford to buy my own house since prices of houses unless find extremely highly paid job and even for those need more work experience that only times bring. I live in rented apartment which is not too bad despite peoples saying I should buy house since cheaper on long term. I do not want take loan to build house, I never took loans, I do not even have credit card. I pay all in cash or debit card. If cannot afford something I want I save for it even long time if needed. And why I said rented apartment is not too bad Lets imagine it like this: Either you take load to pay 100 000€ or more to build a house (plus any additional) and in case damage occurs that is not your fault but insurance refuses fix you are on your own, also to move other city you need sell house that may take time and that is why not optimal to me, who knows what life brings. Let just say you wont go to centre of town where apartment can be 1000€ or more per month for single person block and rather go outside town where got decent connections to city trough bike, bus or other like I do. You pay 500-600 euros for three room house that may even have sauna (room filled with steam finnish use to relax ). Also all non private apartments on my area offer cable tv which is same as OTA tv here but no distraction from weather. Then they offer free 10mb/s cable modem broadband connection for free and 100mb/s cable modem connection with 10 euros/month. Also good portition of electric and water is included on rent price and if did exceed it you will get that portition paid back. And if anything breaks, rent aparments services comes replace/fix it including shower, toilet, fridge, furnace. To get rid off house I just tell rent company I will sign off and withing next month my rent ends

  11. @ArcticFoxie , @XPerceniol and other members from USA , mind giving your opinion on this and ,perhaps, tell us : is this also true for your region , {but I'm not asking you to tell us where you live exactly, just the state , if it's ok} , thanks in advance. Would be interested to hear EU citizens too ( @Gansangriff , @Mr.Scienceman2000 and the others ), esp. from the West , since I've heard it about Ireland (EU member) too. https://twitter.com/APhilosophae/status/1402434266970140676

  12. 1 - I'm sorry, I didn't see where you said about the other files needed to be fixed too. Perhaps I missed something , but you were talking about options and chrome.dll only. 2 - I didn't document it too , but if you think we need a guide , you're welcome to create one and be it's leader . I will publish my own findings there or you can just copy them from here and mention me. I will definitely add on if I remember or find something new. Though, I think 360chrome is not very popular. BTW , do you know how to restore Aero ? I'm tired of that ugly and flat win8/10 skin.

  13. This site is almost 20 years old, it is not that surprising. There are many accounts that I have made on other forums and not gone back to. There is not enough time in the day to be posting on forums, especially as you get older. Times change and people do different things.
