  2. Dad wasn't amused, but the rest of us were Dad was standing around the grill during a cookout and somehow the topic of the house we all grew up in came up. Dad kinda started to boast, said something to the effect of "Best investment I ever made, bought it for $40k, sold it for $110k." Without thinking, I said "You lost money." He was like, "You didn't hear me, I bought it for $40k and sold it for $110k." "I heard you, you lost money." The cookout turned into an add-up-the-numbers reminiscing of the house we grew up in. Dad had it built next door to the house we were in at the time then sold that first house. So his 30yr mortgage from 1983 was only $40k after selling the first house and paying off a couple cars. He retired in 2007 but the house did not sell until 2009 (a land-contract sale fell through and he had to relist it for sale). Sold it in 2009 and he was under that 30yr mortgage that entire time, two second mortgage home equity lines of credit for home improvements throughout that duration. He was still convinced he made a profit of $110k minus $40k of $70k. I kept telling him he lost money but he still would not believe. So we grabbed pen and paper... 25yrs into a 30yr mortgage at 8% = $62.5k in mortgage interest vinyl siding home improvement = $8k new roof = $6k added central air and new furnace = $7k added pool and deck = $4k He would have had to sell for $127.5k just to "break even". Us kids found it funnier than Dad did

  3. True dat. The rest of the story was more about how dad has been bitten time and time again on rental properties and how "my generation" has done much better staying AWAY from real estate "as an investment". A place to LIVE, of course, but not as an "investment".

  4. Still it should work in safe mode, at a low refresh rate and 640x480, i.e. using the built-in (very basic) VGA,SYS driver. That display should be "native" 1366x768: https://www.crutchfield.com/S-Ck1x8D2nHIj/p_05232HL67U/Toshiba-32HL67U.html Then as suggested by RanyShadow, you should be able to modify the .inf/EDID if needed, but it is "queer" as this kind of modifications are usually not needed for relatively recent displays. Are you sure you did not - by accident - forced a higher than 1366x768 resolution or a stupidly fast refresh rate (probably that thingy cannot go faster than 50 or 60 Hz)? Try with another surely working monitor/display and try setting the video card resolution to 1366x768@50Hz or 1366x768@60Hz,, and then try connecting that Toshiba TV, first thing. jaclaz

  5. If I may, and if I get your story right , youmade fun of your dad, but what could you propose as an alternative? Bitcoin wasn's invented yet at the time and investing in the market/stocks does not provide - last time I checked at least -a roof over a family. jaclaz

  6. EnTech have some useful display utilities. For a start, check if softMCCS can read the EDID. You can try to generate a customized .inf file for your TV with PowerStrip. There is a guide at TechRepublic.

  7. True, but I also think inflation is irrelevant. What I mean by that is that most people only think of money "linearly". So an "investment" is only an "investment" if the sale-price exceeds the cost basis. The cost basis is the price paid plus deposits added along the way (ie, the home improvement costs). $40k in 1983 is $86k in 2009, so according to inflation he did "profit" even though his sale-price did not exceed his cost basis. But I do think that most people think sale-price relative to price-paid. That was, in reality, the only thing dad was thinking when he compared $110k sale-price to $40k price-paid (excluding deposits added along the way)

  8. The current Linux Mint might be too fat for the 10-year-old machine with a standard HDD. Maybe your computer gets to the limit already through booting this Linux! Sometimes there is no harmony between the graphics driver and Linux, too. Sometimes, you are just unlucky to have an incompatible hardware. However first, a computer that old has to be cleaned. Get some screwdrivers and open it up. Aside from that, you could look for a smaller Linux. Xubuntu with Xfce maybe? I use Salix with Xfce, but that's not the easiest to use and some programs are missing.

  9. Plus the inflation of the currency! 40.000 dollars in 1980 aren't 40.000 dollars in 2020.

  11. I had nothing but bad luck with Maxtor hard disk. Same applies to later quantum disks. I had one with only half capacity left due bad blocks and consider I actually used it few more years despite it. Definitely no data integrity on that pc I had similar on my Pentium 4. Pointed finger all expect av before ditched av for good need try that at somepoint. Always left nic as default (expect with powersave and sleep disabled) and blocked scripts on browser. Maybe that will also increase downloading speeds too that feels slow compared my internet and hardware. On slower machines had faster dl under linux. Never knew about that nic thing

  12. Intel Celeron 2,00 GHz (eventually overclocked to 2,5 GHz), 256 MB RAM, eventually upgraded to 1 GB, NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440, HDD - unknown Maxtor 60 GB, which eventually had to be replaced, got a 80 GB model then, this one died at one point as well, don't remember the year, but the entire timespan of that computer's service was 2001-2009. Thinking about it now, I don't think it was actually that slow, it might have been just my crazy expectations, probably that disk just couldn't fetch data fast enough for everything to open instantly plus there was this quirk, taskbar always remained frozen for at least a minute after startup. And we ran a freaking anti-virus then, first Norton AntiVirus 2002, then switched to ESET NOD32. The stupid old me surely didn't think of that, I was disabling services, even COM ports in Device Manager, but not an antivirus. Though NOD32 was supposedly non-intrusive. Anyway, the only speed related optimization that I'd do on XP is running TCP Optimizer. Windows XP and below are tuned for slower internet connections and there's no automagic function adjusting parameters dynamically. Find some website with higher resolution images and watch how fast they are appearing before and after.

  13. My nLite Services are currently as follows - ;# Services # Alerter Application Layer Gateway Beep Driver Distributed Link Tracking Client DNS Client Error Reporting Fax Service Indexing Service Messenger Remote Registry Route Listening Service RPC Locator Secondary Logon Service Advertising Protocol Simple TCP/IP Services System Restore Service TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Telnet My list of Services via My Computer -> Manage -> Computer Management -> Services does not list QoS RSVP, Quality of Service (QoS), or Text Services Framework so I may have removed those elsewhere with nLite. I do list WebClient and it is listed as Status = Started and Startup Type = Automatic -- I have not tried disabling the WebCient service.

  15. You're most welcome ! I would also suggest to disable everything regarding remote access to your XP computer and block ports 23, 89, 107 , 81, 82 , 135 and 445 with your firewall . These are the most used for attacks. https://www.lifewire.com/disable-remote-access-in-windows-xp-2487711 https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/disable-remote-desktop https://www.technlg.net/windows/remote-desktop-terminal-services-how-to/

  18. Also , may remove all keyboards and languages you don't need to save space on your HDD/SSD. I usually remove all Asian (like chinese and the such) and cyrillic (like rusian) because they take a lot of space and we don't need them , obviously. Do not delete Dutch , German and Swedish keyboards , who knows what future may bring .

  19. He is right , not much to gain . I usually remove all unneeded with nLite before the installation . These are the services I remove (completely) . You may just copy/paste into your nLite preset Last Session.ini. ;# Services # Alerter Automatic Updates Error Reporting Messenger QoS RSVP Quality of Service (QoS) Remote Registry Telnet Text Services Framework WebClient P.S. I'm not sure if you use "Automatic Updates", but I think they don't work regardless.
