Hi there, is there any place where Office 2007 SP3 .exe files are still stored? On the Microsoft site, I get redirected to Microsoft Update, but I only see .cab files over there. I am specifically looking for the Dutch SP3.1 point

Well, sure thing, I can check. The version I have is: And if I search for updates, it says that I'm on the latest version. If I try to download the latest 32bit version from here: https://t1.daumcdn.net/potplayer/PotPlayer/Version/Latest/PotPlayerSetup.exe it says: And VideoHelp states that the last supported version for XP is: https://www.videohelp.com/download/PotPlayerSetup-1.7.17508.exe so version 1.7.17508, which is NOT correct as I'm running version 1.7.21295 on XP. Now, the version linked by @VistaLover is this one: https://www.videohelp.com/download/PotPlayerSetup-210209.exe and although it's not the "latest and greatest", it is indeed newer than mine as mine was built on September 2020, while his was built on February 9th, 2021. So I downloaded it and tried to install it and guess what? It worked: and just to let you see that it's an XP system: Works like a charm, so I'm glad he tagged me and I was able to test it as I'll keep using it as my main build. See? This is what happens when you actually test things. About software origins, my XP has the kernel from the One Core API project, the HAL from the Russian mod, drivers for USB 3.0, ACPI, NVME support etc from another modding project that backported them from the Microsoft ones etc... I mean sometimes you have to have a bit of faith in other human beings. I do and everything works.1 point

Pardon me if I didn't get this right , but does that (greyed-out) McAfee tray icon belong to Web Advisor? From previous discussion, I got the impression Web Advisor is a browser extension/plugin... In any case, in a recent McAfee support article, they noted that the legacy McAfee products that were compatible with XP (& Vista) are no longer able to receive definition updates since Jan 1st 2021 , which might explain the greying-out and the (white) exclamation mark in a red background - this is me assuming the icon belongs to one of these legacy McAfee products... If, OTOH, the tray icon does belong to Web Advisor, which is still able to receive def updates (and user has set it in "manual" mode and delayed updating it), then this sets an exception to McAfee's support policy wrt XP...1 point

Options/Test path before synchronize? I misread your question: you may want to test realtime synch (top right tick-box) with preview synch (second top left tick-box. In my opinion, t is the fastest, simplest yet complete sync software in XP.1 point

Step by step instructions on how to remove Alexa. But like they said : "This process is difficult", esp. for beginners , it is better to remove it before , like I suggested. https://www.safer-networking.com/removealexa.php To remove Dr.Watson watch this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfaohidTEKs1 point

The RetroZilla Search Engine Collection was updated, linked in the first post. Use whatever search engine(s) you want, easily accessible via F9 key. For day to day use DuckDuckGo-Lite is very good, efficient, nice layout, provides Zero-click info for many queries. All search engines work with JavaScript disabled though some render results better than others. Note Startpage requires an updated user agent string, install the User Agent Switcher extension and use it's Internet Explorer 7 Windows Vista user agent for example (see RetroZilla Extensions Collection). Changes: Removed Twitter legacy search as Twitter no longer provides this accessibility and full-featured Twitter can't be accessed in RetroZilla. Added Wiby 'Search Engine for the Classic Web', thanks for mentioning @Gansangriff. https://wiby.me/about/ Removed YouTube search as the site no longer displays in RetroZilla.1 point

Yes, the Explorer integration is its major asset! But, even beginning with my Windows XP era (2005-2009), what I use till now specifically for Explorer context menu is the, so called, LITE version of MediaInfo, which just comprises a minimalistic GUI (executable made by Atak_Snajpera, a doom9 developer) and the official MediaInfo.dll file (which can be updated independently of the GUI, by downloading the MediaInfo_DLL_xx.xx_Windows_i386_WithoutInstaller.7z package from MediaInfo author). The GUI hasn't changed much over the years, it was initially developed as part of the Tools section of early-XP era K-Lite Codec Pack versions, that's how I was introduced to it and stuck with it ever since... More about MediaInfoLITE below: https://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Other-VIDEO-Tools/MediaInfo-Lite.shtml VideoHelp also host a link for the latest version: https://www.videohelp.com/software/MediaInfo https://www.videohelp.com/download/MediaInfoLite2103.exe Cheers1 point

One of the most notorious spies included in WIndows XP , that the previous poster didn't mention, are : 1 - Dr. Watson. It is running and if any Windows application crashes, Dr. Watson creates a report , guess what next. Usually prepared reports go here : C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson More regarding this subject : https://hotcomm.com/FAQ/FAQ_drwatson.asp 2 - Alexa - it spies and reports all about the websites you visit . Both can be removed with nLite and/or similar tools. Or just insert this section to your nLite preset during the preparition of the setup. This is only for removing Alexa , 'cause some may still want to use Dr. Watson for debugging. The first three lines are for your own choosing . I really appreciate , but I'm afraid you won't be able to test it yourself since all retail versions have a rather hard activation process and install a ton of bloatware (protections and the such) , not to mention you'd have to have a license. The version that came with the PC is much easier in this regard . It auto self-activates on this motherboard only . The version is 11.0.0.2516 . With all due respect to VLC , it just doesn't have that picture depth and sound quality and began to support DTS only recently. I'm not a Cyberlink employee , it's my own opinion and I really like that version . The newer ones are much , much worse , so I won't buy them.1 point

Testplatform HP Pavilion DV-5 Entertainment Notebook PC (4GB RAM, 2GHz dual-core) with Microsoft® Windows® 7 x64 and Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1. Driver: USB_W7DRVBETA_US_1_01_0091. Tested with clean installed OS and only this driver. The Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 is connected with optical TOSlink to a 5.1 Pioneer reciever. There occures great (and increasing) latency while playback of videofiles. -Sound will very noticably loose sync from video within a minute (all filetypes, not a codec problem). The latency will not occure with the internal notebook speakers, nor on same system with Microsoft® Windows® Vista x86. The Notebook ships with HPs "AMD USB Filter Driver" that should improve the performance of USB accessories, such as USB speakers or a USB TV tuner. I have tried to install this also on the testplatform to resolve the problem, however even though it seems to install fine the latency/syncproblem still resists. Im not sure whether this is important or not. What can be done, any ideas, troubleshooting or tests I can do?1 point

I think that good practice is to disable any services that aren't necessary. In other words, if you can find a way to do what you want to do without those two services, do it that way. The other point is that UPnP introduces openings and security issues specifically when you have that warm and cozy feeling of being behind a Router/Firewall/NAT. Use it at your own risk.1 point
