  1. My Vista experience is okay, being a long time Win7 user, it wasn't hard to adapt Vista for the first time, it felt so smooth and well put together with SP2 + updates to 2020. I think it's still a very good usable option for legacy Windows users that has a stable extended kernel

  2. Yes 960 or 950 , at least. They both support HEVC h265 4K, but 970 and 980 doesn't . I have a 980 , so I'm sure .

  3. Summary: For a long time, there have been 2 choices for extended kernels and both of them have their exclusives that aren't present in the other extended kernel. WildBill's extended kernel has many exclusive ntdll functions, SxS support, and a few exclusive functions in other files. BlackWingCat's extended kernel has many exclusive kernel32 functions (and some in other files). The big issue is that ntdll and kernel32 cannot be mixed, forcing people to choose between a better kernel32 or a better ntdll. The main goal of KernelXE is to eliminate this issue. ⚠️ This is beta software. Don't expect it to be stable. ⚠️ KernelXE Lite: KernelXE Lite is a smaller and reduced version of KernelXE that only contains files that are stable and compatible with BlackWingCat's extended kernel. KernelXE Lite is not compatible with full KernelXE and is meant to be installed on top of BlackWingCat's extended kernel. rv1 changes: Added custom BlackWingCat ntdll.dll with RtlIpv6StringToAddressExW and RtlSetLastWin32Error. ⚠️ Make sure to install the WildBill Update Collection BEFORE KernelXE. It is required and your system will be unbootable if you install KernelXE first. ⚠️ Downloads: KernelXE v0.2.4.2 KernelXE v0.2.5-rv1 Lite WildBill Update Collection The future of KernelXE and what I have been doing: As kernel32 grew, problems started to occur, like blank spaces in code, bugged code, and not enough space to add certain things. I decided to re-extend kernel32. This means redoing the entirety of .patch, which is where all non-Microsoft code is stored. Specifically in kernel32, I haven't had enough space in .data to add the data needed for some LCID related functions that are extremely commonly used in programs. I have already re-extended gdi32, and I may re-extend some other file if I need to. There won't be a new release of KernelXE for a long time, but when it finally comes, KernelXE may actually be a suitable alternative to BlackWingCat's extended kernel. Changelog: Public Beta 1: Initial Public Release Public Beta 2: Exported real CreateActCtxW as CreateActCtxB to prevent explorer.exe crashing. Added CreateActCtxW stub to take care of programs that call it while fixing the real function. Moved QueryUnbiasedInterruptTime, SetThreadStackGuarantee, K32EmptyWorkingSet, and GetNativeSystemInfo to .text Added idndl.dll, normaliz.dll, and the nls files normaliz.dll uses to the update package. v0.2.3: First version of KernelXE with new versioning system Full changelog inside update installer. v0.2.3.1: Added updated DirectSound library Added updated hotplug.dll and stobject.dll Added Windows Server 2003 msvcrt.dll Added BlackWingCat's Reiwa compatible locale.nls v0.2.4: Added PAE Added this HAL Timer fix Added Windows Vista msvcrt.dll Added KeAcquireInStackQueuedSpinLockRaiseToSynch and HalConvertIdtToIrql to all HALs Added KernelXE branded bootscreens Added some ntoskrnl functions (list in full changelog) v0.2.4-rv1: Added exFAT stuff (update.inf was weird) v0.2.4.1: Removed exFAT stuff Fixed and cleaned up update.inf Replaced Vista msvcrt with Server 2003 msvcrt (Vista msvcrt causes a BSOD related to winsrv) Added Kernel Mode Driver Framework Added WinUSB v0.2.4.2: Added some user32 stubs requested by piotrhn Added a missing piece of code in CreateActCtxB Updated msvcrt to 7.0.6002.22755 (Vista) Changed version block to check if the NT major version is 5 and removed NT minor version checking. Fixed loading bar not appearing in bootscreen Lots of new files Programs: Relocation Section Editor - Only one that handles huge relocation tables like the one in ntoskrnl. Executable | Source Code

  4. Hello all, I present to you the ultimate Windows Vista Modernisation Guide. I was inspired by @WinClient5270's YT video on the same and also by the Windows 2000 modernisation guide over at w2k.phreaknet.org, but I wanted to add on to the video and present the info in forum post form, and so I have created this thread. Please note : I won't be talking very much about hardware support here. Compatible hardware with Windows Vista : Pre-Install Recommendations: This is purely a recommendation and not an order, but please try to have atleast 8 GB of RAM and a good SSD. Yes, Vista does not support native TRIM for SSDs but it can be done either through manufacturer provided SSD utilities or (if manufacturer utilities are either not available, do not support Vista or do not perform TRIM) SSD Tweaker Pro, IOBit Smart Defrag or other such utilities. Also, with an SSD, I have found performance on Vista to be slightly faster than Windows 7 on the same hardware. Install and post-install instructions: 1) Grab your installation media and make sure your computer supports USB booting, if you wish to install via USB. Install Vista and install PC manufacturer provided drivers (if any) and make sure you have you have a driver updater app such as Driver Booster or SDI ready. 2) Install Driver Booster and update the remaining drivers. It nags you to buy the Pro edition sometimes, but it's easy to ignore. 3) Install WinCDEmu, a CD emulator that eliminates the need of burning CD's/DVD's for installing softwares such as MS Office and brings the Windows 8+ feature of mounting ISO files directly to Vista. Also, install VLC media player, Foxit Reader/SumatraPDF etc.etc. for basic functionality. Also, install any office suite of your choice. LibreOffice and OpenOffice are also fine but I recommend MS Office 2007/2010 as they have the best compatibility with .docx, .xlsx, .pptx etc. file types (more preferably 2010). 4) Install ClamWin Antivirus that still receives definition updates and actively supports Windows 95 through 10 or Avast Antivirus (these are the 2 antivirus programs that have worked well for me on Vista). If you wish, you may harden your security cover by installing Malwarebytes 3.5.1. NOTE : I have provided the link to the Last versions of software for Vista forum thread for users' reference. 5) Update your Vista until at January 2020 to install the latest version of the extended kernel (07.25.2022) at the time of editing this post. And since Windows Update no longer works, use offline updating or update slipstreaming. I won't provide detailed info about slipstreaming. However, if you do want a detailed update slipstreaming guide, check out @asdf2345's tutorial below (NOTE: this tutorial is only applicable for slipstreaming pre-EOL updates): One of the best tools for updating even now and beyond is DISM++, but if it is inconvenient for some users, I have another method that will work. Josh Davidson over at Youtube has created a video on how to update Windows Vista completely offline without using DISM++ or slipstreaming. Also, there is a patch available for download from MyDigitalLife that restores Windows Update on Vista. created by @abbodi1406. Link to the video: Server 2008 updates can be downloaded manually. NOTE: Here's the link to the Server 2008 updates for Vista MSFN thread. 6) Once your Vista is up to date, you may install the Vista extended kernel. Please note : Keeping in mind that @win32's extended kernel is in WIP stage at the time of writing this post, this step can be a bit risky at times if not executed with 100% precaution, it may lead to unwanted consequences and a reinstall might be needed in some rare cases. After installing the extended kernel, you can install a modern web browser for a better browsing experience. 7) If you download large files often but have trouble finding a download manager, I recommend using Xtreme Download Manager as it is very good and gets the job done. You may download the installer from retrosystemsrevival.blogspot.com . Suggestions, additions or corrections to this guide are most welcome. I hope this becomes a valuable piece of information for Vista holdouts!

  5. Hello all, this is a thread created by me for you fellow MSFN users to share your experience of using Windows XP. I've created such a thread already on the Windows Vista forum, check it out if you have not already. I've shared my PC specs there. BTW, I used XP Home x86 up until 2016 when I was younger and when I was a complete computer noob, and then moved on to Windows 7 on my desktop computer. Also, being a Vista user now, I don't use XP very much, except for testing legacy stuff and using Office 2003 on a XP Pro x86 VM.

  6. Latest version of API Parameter Count is 1.0.2.0. Initial release can be found in the large package here. A repackage can be found here. It adds previous versions 1.0.0.0 and 1.0.1.0 as scripts only (in the source folder) and a fixed section name in the ini file. Also, due to a programming error the application cannot unpack the internal copy of the ini file upon first start, remaining in a file open loop until fed with a proper path, therefore a copy of the ini has been placed in the executable folder making it easy for the user to select it.

  7. jaclaz, I don't know about Italy , but since this nice fella lives in Slovenia ... Federal laws in Slovenia now are just "laws" without "Federal". "The Constitution was adopted on December 23, 1991 and hereinafter the laws started to pass; until they were put into force, the old Yugoslav Republic and Federal laws and rules have been applicable." 3.1.3. Laws Laws/acts are the main general law acts in a law system. Hierarchically they are subordinated to the Constitution and International treaties signed and ratified by the National Assembly and have to be in accordance with them (the principle of constitutionality). The laws are adopted by National assembly according to the procedure described below (sector 4.2.4.). In Slovenia there are no different types of laws (as there are, e.g. in federal states; federal laws and state laws) but in practice also a type of law called code (zakonik, kodeks) is used. https://www.nyulawglobal.org/globalex/Slovenia.html P.S. So even if there is a law, that was passed according to this directive , let them show it . I can't find any local Slovenian law with such requerement, no matter how hard I try. Can you ?

  10. Yes , I'm trying to help win32 too , why would you think otherwise ? And all I'm saying , Vista x64 is more stable on Pentiums than iCore line. Edit : spent some time testing the new reduced ISO of Vista RTM x64 on my laptop with Pentium , without installing the HD drivers from Intel , mentioned earlier . The bug happened 4 times . Reboots in total - approx. 70 . So I'm absolutely sure the bug has nothing to do with the drivers . Also , the laptop doesn't have HPET settings in the BIOS.

  11. Yep, it's confirmed. TV channels marked "copy once" by cable providers can only be recorded by WMC. v1.2 released. Changes: - N/A Removals: - N/A Additions: - Added v12 of Windows Media Center 64-bit for Windows 8.1 to restore functionality to record TV channels marked "copy once" by cable providers. - Added a bunch more Start button skins and a Vista taskbar skin for fun.

  12. Exactly. The proper Vista era only began in around 2008 AFAIK as proper drivers were not available for Vista and OEMs put XP drivers on Vista installs.

  13. Ha-ha-ha , sorry ... 1tb for 4k and 8k videos , really !?!? 710 is not suited for 4K/8K. Gotta have at least GTX950 (works with Vista) . Everything else makes sense .

  14. Dixel is right . It's not >federal< law. What a hybrid times we are living in . Half-laws , somewhat-laws , para-laws , half-measures , hypocrisy all around. But most don't mind and will obey anything. Boycott them.

  15. Hello , this topic is about Vista , so no discussion of any others like 6.1 . Do we really need to involve the moderators ? Hi , could you be more specific about your CPU model ? 'cause I don't have anything , even remotely similar to what you've just described. Today I had a chance to test on Pentium G4620 and everything was pretty much similiar to Haswell Pentium . Logon bug from time to time , yes , but rarely . Audio and licensing services may not start , yes , but rarely too. And the machine was quite usable. Services could be started manually.

  16. Only for the record, SVCHOST.EXE is a sort of "catch all" for services. You will need process explorer (or similar) to understand which actual service is "behind" svchost.exe. https://www.raymond.cc/blog/identify-loaded-svchostexe-in-windows-task-list/ And, possibly this will also help: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/process_activity_view.html jaclaz

  17. Your SSD is corsair, right? I think Corsair offers an SSD toolbox that performs manual trim and supports Windows XP through 10 Otherwise, you can use SSD tweaker pro (that's what I use)

  18. Office 2013+ is not working entirely with the extended kernel as of now, but win32 has gotten the installer to launch and work up to an extent by adding an x86 kernel32.dll function necessary to launch the installer. More x86 functions that would make Office 2013+ to run are being added, AFAIK. Btw, I have a question. Why exactly would you need Office 2013+ now? Office 2013 and up (especially 2013) are very crappy, bloated and bad-looking, without a standard MSI installer which you could slim down to remove unneeded programs like InfoPath, Outlook (I don't use it, but maybe you and some other people do, I dunno) and Skype for Business/Lync in version 2013 (2016 and 2019, 2013 Pro Plus has an MSI installer, still, the programs are more disk-heavy that 2007 or 2010, which still work on Vista). Aero also does not work with Office 2013+ installed on Windows 7, so Aero working with Vista is not in question. According to me, the fact that Office 2010 is the last working version of Office on Vista is a blessing in disguise (I'm repeating WinClient 5270's words which he posted elsewhere on the Vista forum about the same issue ). Not meaning to insult you, but I just want to know why you need Office 2016. So please answer me.

  19. Good day, I have good news - I was able to get the broadcast on Twitch and the video on Twitter to work on latest versions of Firefox or Pale Moon! Before running the latest browsers, you need to install the extended kernel from @win32 As we know, initially on newer versions of Firefox and Pale Moon, some built-in codecs in Windows Vista do not work, since the Firefox development team simply removed some of the Windows Vista codecs part of the code from the browser. As a result, some sites (including Twitch, Twitter) stopped displaying videos. To fix this, download this archive and extract it to your Firefox or Pale Moon root folder. It simply replaces two files, thanks to which videos or broadcasts will work on those sites on which it did not work.

  20. I am offended that I was born at the wrong moment and at the wrong time. I want to see the internet from 2005-2009, I don't want to see the current situation with the unnecessary staff and dull interface. I want to see the complete openness of people on the Internet and their kindness to me. I want to see how Windows was made lovingly and stable, not 10, which is filled with surveillance and unnecessary services. I want to see the past of the internet and what it was like.

  21. You should install WildBill's updates before installing kernelxe as it's based on those files. http://www.mediafire.com/download/vdbwx67dx34jezj/Windows2000-KB2479629-v3-x86-ENU.exe http://www.mediafire.com/download/1agd8icjjbu5s4n/Windows2000-KB2508429-v17-x86-ENU.exe I'm so excited just to have full raw input support. Just waiting for school stuff to quiet down and I will have an SSE-only test box.

  22. Good news! Zoom meetings from 5.0.5 onwards up to 5.4.2 work with the extended kernel in my observation. I've not tested it with unmodified Vista though (I'm saying this because there was a tutorial to run the latest version on XP and Vista with the TLS 1.1 and 1.2 update, which I don't think actually works). The last version available for download for Vista and XP on their official site is 5.0.5. EDIT: Unfortunately, version 5.4.3 onwards does not work with extended kernel. It asks for some missing function (I was not able to remember lol) in KERNEL32.DLL.
