  1. By far the worst prob for old Win98 browsers in today's web is outdated https-encryption (SSL/TLS). Websites insisting to connect with modern TLS1.2 are completely BLOCKED, showing only error pages, usually this infamous one: Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap That desaster started only 1-2 years ago with Google's command to encrypt the whole public web with modern standards too, and things went downhill fast. Meanwhile half the internet is broken for old Firefox/Mozilla browsers! Amazingly, old Opera12.02 (needs KernelEx) is still holding up much better, it was amazingly advanced for its time, but now losing the uphill battle too. Lucky the people who can run the last Presto version (Opera 12.15?) Luckily, especially for Mozilla fans, rescue came from projects like Retrozilla, with TLS1.2, for pure vanilla Windows98. https://msfn.org/board/topic/174987-x/ And since a few years also from roytam1. Focussing mainly on Mozilla browsers for XP, but occasionally also a special build for older systems. Such a pity that he doesn't create own topics here for his fascinating Win98-browser updates. But hidden away in the middle of giant melting pot topics in the XP-forum that stuff just gets lost. Only just-for-fun hobby users of retro stuff (like himself) may stumble across it over there. So what do, to give notice of those gems to more regular users of old systems too? Which are HERE? Perhaps we can at least collect some links here, for real 9X users, to find that stuff easier. And there's probably more interesting stuff floating around out there somewhere, from other people, that could be added too. For longer discussions of single projects it would be better if anyone can create new separate topics around here, to keep that stuff together, then in THIS topic just post the link and a bit description.

  2. Still it's not the same. The POSReady 2009 hack simply made WU/MU deliver the updates, which otherwise were also available (and remain so) from the MS Update Catalog. Those in ESU won't be available unless by explicit unabashed deceit.

  3. @Tripredacus One thing. Is the topic that was "hidden" any different than POS Ready Updates for XP? That also bypassed the proper terms of agreement for XP, no?

  4. Make sure you have Core Updates 4.5.2016.18 or higher. Don't use update 17. Otherwise maybe a missing dll.

  6. I do think some here fail to fully grasp the scope of Roytam's builds. Roytam doesn't "write" the code, he takes 'upstream' code and 'ports it' to "his" builds. So without an 'upstream' Opera trunk/branch/master, pick your terminology, there is quite literally nothing for Roytam to "do" as far as Opera goes.

  7. To be fair, he is right though if the source code was illegally leaked. Quite why Opera are still being so possessive about Opera 12 years after they abandoned it is anyone's guess, but it is their property until they say it isn't any more.

  8. Lovely though it would be, as IMO Opera 12 is the best browser ever produced, I suspect Roy has enough on his plate already without starting to pick apart another completely different browser!

  9. It certainly is, especially when they deliberately stop the installers working on an operating system where the software actually still works fine! Oracle Java is a prime example.

  10. Dropping support is one thing, and that is not what happens with software these days. Instead these developers are actively blocking OSes that are not in their support list. That is entirely different situation.

  11. for fun, nostalgia, and investigation, tried to replace NSS to retrozilla-tff_sha384 version in old classila-based phoenix browser. of course it still some fixes to give user smooth experience, may review the code if there is time. repo: https://github.com/roytam1/classilla/commits/tls12-exp download (for fun!): http://o.rths.ml/gpc/files1.rt/phoenix-0.5-cl933-tls12.7z

  12. How charming! Saying that sort of thing to a forum supervisor, even if it was in jest, is not a good idea!
