  1. So shocked to hear this, it was only a month or so ago that I was corresponding with Rudolph about a disk partition alignment program that he had just built. I use several of his programs, to enhance my Windows 98 installation, and to do things like applying TRIM to my FAT32 SSD. He was an absolute genius, up with the very top experts on this forum IMO. 67 is no age to go nowadays. RIP Rudolph.

  2. so build time is shrunk into 1/3 because of shiny new 3700x 8C/16T (in -j11 instead of -j6 as cl.exe can use up more than 1 core) instead of old 1230v2 4C/8T, and also SSD instead of 7200rpm HDD.

  3. Of course there is now an iPhone 11, but the argument is certainly valid with desktop OSX and Windows 10, which I suspect will be with us for the foreseeable future!

  4. I've found out about it by reading a thread on VOGONS, where a user mentioned his RAM patch for Windows 98. While I never used his patches, being an XP user, it is a big loss for the entire community and the people who still RDD on Windows 98. Here's his obituary: https://kraussfuneralhome.com/tribute/details/858/Rudolph-Loew/obituary.html Rest in peace, @rloew. He was 67 years old and passed away the 11th of this month.

  6. If you think Windows 10 was cursed (and worried about Windows 11 too?), wait for Windows 13! It will cause mechanical HDDs to explode during the live demonstration on MSFNBCNN as a RAID-80 array of them can't keep up with the loading of their own website in Chrome 3452.456.3451.414g. The pundits will note how well Windows 2000 works on their 75 year old ThinkPads.

According to vendor's site : I did download the win32 setup (glview534.exe) and proceeded with the installation; it turns out the app has NO issues launching and successfully running here (Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit, .NET FW 4.6.1): (Thanks to @jaclaz for mentioning this in a Win7 subforum thread... )

  12. pm27 based take least time, in 16mins full rebuild basilisk52 takes most time. in 19mins pm26 takes more time, in ~25mins, but because there is no unified build, and also less optimized build infrastructure (mach, pymake, vc2005, etc.)

  17. I changed the screen in my Asus netbook as it was fitted with a highly reflective one which was like looking in a mirror! The matt finish one I replaced it with is much better. It wasn't too difficult to do, but obviously this varies a lot between different units. Its native resolution is 1024x600, which means that Windows 8.1 apps will not open as they have to have at least 768 vertical resolution to work. I used a registry hack to enable me to switch the resolution to 1024x768 to use the apps, but in this mode the display is not only blurry, but also compressed vertically so everything is distorted. That is preferable IMO to the image being the right shape but vertically cropped! This is tolerable for temporary use to read the mail or news app, but hardly ideal, and is a good example of the undesirability of using any display at anything other than its native resolution.

  18. the previous Flash player updates like builds .223 & .238 were non-security fixes and Adobe did not give MS those updated flash ocx files on Tue Sept. 10, MS did finally release a new Flash Player update (KB4516115), v32.0.0.255, which is a security update. resolves the new security flaws with Flash Player noted in Adobe security bulletin APSB19-46: https://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/flash-player/apsb19-46.html

Test site to verify: http://browserspy.dk/browser.php (Please note this pref doesn't modify the reported Windows NT version contained in the User Agent String (navigator.userAgent), so a website checking both strings via JS may get conflicting results: )

  20. I think XP is still OK for day-to-day use, as long as you have a good AV and an up-to-date Web browser, such as one of @roytam1's builds. If you use browser plug-ins like Flash and/or Java, keep them up-to-date also: For AV recommendations you should check out this thread: ... especially the discussion toward the end of the thread, since XP MSE no longer receives usable updates. If you have Office 2010 installed on XP, make sure it's up to date too, or at least as up-to-date as possible without breaking XP compatibility: So, still plenty of updating to do, even without updates to the OS. One last thing: there was a recent kerfuffle over vulnerabilities in CTF. But you may not need CTF; if not, you can disable it:
