  1. Life is good because it is so varied I see those as features and advantages of Windows 7 when compared to 10. jaclaz

  2. I usually rename the pm folder to "pm_old", then create a new, empty, "palemoon" folder and move the extracted new version to it. If anything goes wrong, this way I can reverse the change and test/fix things.

  3. As for the email issue, if you liked Outlook Express, you can use Windows Mail on 7. The forums at eightforums.com have a detailed thread about it. I cannot agree with the Windows 10 recommendation, however Windows 8.1 is in support until 2023. You can COMPLETELY hide Metro apps and that Start Screen so don't let that dissuade you.

  6. Doesn't work on Vista Perhaps @UCyborg could fix it, since it's open source...

  7. CC333 asked "Is it possible to avoid installing those updates while still getting all the others?" Sure, and why not. So far Spectre and Meltdown and other Looming Terrors are primarily of interest to computer science students and working chip designers, rather than the rest of us. Vast hordes of Evial Miscreants out to ruin the PCs and lives of the rest of us haven't materialized yet, and I suspect that if/when they do appear, striking at the vulnerable central core of Vista users is not going to be the primary thing on their mind. So yes, you can skip those particular updates and things will probably go alright. Now maybe, just maybe, you want to dual boot between Vista and Win 10, or between Vista and Linux or something like that -- then you might want to have your system's firmware brought up to modern snuff. That said ... Y'know, at peak performance with a Sandy Bridge, you've got a 7-core processor running at 3.4 GHz. In the WORST WORST WORST circumstances, accepting all the Intel and Microsoft updates intended to cope with Spectre/Meltdown/etc. will cut 30% off your system performance. Which is in some ways dismaying, but in others ... you've got a ten year old chip, you know in advance it's not going to let you conquer the world, And yet by the standards of a few years before that -- 2006 say, when Vista was released to the world --- a 3 or 5 or 7 core computer running at 2.5 GHz would have been absolutely stunning. So. You want to play with Vista? Join the club! Welcome to the club! And don't worry too much about the clubhouse slipping its moorings and falling into all the nearby ravines.

  8. Thanks for letting me know! Fixed. You must have misread; @Chronius said 1.1.4, not 1.1.14. However the requirements are the same for both versions (Firefox 56 or later). However, despite the developers claiming to only support Firefox 56 or later with this version, Version 1.1.4 works just fine with Firefox 52.9.0: However, you must download and install it manually via the developers' GitHub page (as linked by @Chronius) as trying to install it from the Firefox Add-on page results in this message: You must also disable the extension signature requirement, otherwise Firefox won't let you install it. To learn how to do this, go here. Anyway, I have added Umatrix 1.1.4 as the last version for Firefox 52 ESR as a UNS entry, since this isn't officially supported, but still works as long as you follow what I outlined above.

  9. I agree, there will I'm sure be a dedicated thread or two or more about finally abandoning XP after next April. I personally have no intention of doing so!

  11. I have found another way to solve the problem. First install Debugging Tools for Windows 10, and then save the code below as symbols.cmd 32 bit: MKDIR %userprofile%\appdata\local\temp\dlls CD C:\Windows\System32 XCOPY "dwmcore.dll" %userprofile%\appdata\local\temp\dlls CD C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\10\Debuggers\x86 SYMCHK /r %userprofile%\appdata\local\temp\dlls /s SRV*C:\AeroGlass\symbols\*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols RD /S /Q "%userprofile%\appdata\local\temp\dlls" 64 bit: MKDIR %userprofile%\appdata\local\temp\dlls CD C:\Windows\System32 XCOPY "dwmcore.dll" %userprofile%\appdata\local\temp\dlls CD C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Debuggers\x64 SYMCHK /r %userprofile%\appdata\local\temp\dlls /s SRV*C:\AeroGlass\symbols\*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols RD /S /Q "%userprofile%\appdata\local\temp\dlls" Run symbols.cmd as administrator and the dwmcore.pdb folder will appear in C:\AeroGlass\symbols. Click retry button and it should work.

  12. Well, for the record, I don't think that the OP was attempting a (direct or indirect) upgrade, but rather replacing one of his two instances of XP with a fresh install of 8.1. jaclaz

  16. Thanks! After today's Windows 10 v1803 cumulative update to OS Build 17134.228, my AeroGlass got the dreaded error "Aero Glass for Win8.1 + Incompatibility issue... Aero Glass does not know how to hook your version of DWM (0x81)." I was able to fix the error/issue by following the same instructions (above) that worked for OS Build 17134.191 Many Thanks! -JT
