  1. On behalf of xper, an explanation for MSFN being offline for the last few days. An ingress of water at the location of the server caused damage, fortunately not to the server itself, but to the room's UPS system batteries, which necessitated the removal of power and a physical move of the server to another location. This obviously took some time to do. Hopefully there will now be no further issues relating to this.

  2. i had some time to look at it his function is bugged up basicly he write it himself "// hacky but works: small number is command id, large is submenu (a pointer)"" that indicates he tryed to trick it and had to do "hacky solutions" he use a endless while true loop with ends escapes and continues, also goto´s,calls to the same functions in a function, and then seperators for his menu to fix how he called it "bad seperators" this ended up in a os specific solution you useally dont do that because the operating system can might change the relevant codes over time (such as 7 to 10, or 98 to nt) - something like this already happend in the past but the solution to this problem is possible as the author use multiple fixes all over around (probaly to compensate the problems) it is easy to add that fix - anyways it actually was a bit weird to find it out in win10 its just a flag, that was found like very quickly - but no in xp it didnt do that and gave very weird results even turned off xp was working ok while on 10 it did what it suppose to do - it was turned off as the code suppose to was changed to let me know if it works now! the .avif file (and heic) format dont work for me, neither on xp nor on 10 nor on 7 (both unchanged from the official download page and the changed version) https://www.file-upload.net/download-15277606/SumatraPDF_WINXP_3.5.2_3.zip.html https://www.mediafire.com/file/a4mtyf33ozs6q63/SumatraPDF_WINXP_3.5.2_3.zip/file

  3. I found an alternative way to update uBlock Origin Legacy when the user still decides to install over an existing installation: Backup all your settings using the "Back up to file" button on the page "Settings". Install the new version of uBlock Origin Legacy over the existing one. Reset your installation using the "Reset to default settings" button on the page "Settings". Restore all settings from your backup file. This method can only be used for updates with the same extension ID, i.e. from version 1.16.4.32 and higher or from version 1.16.4.31 and lower. The reason for this is the change of the extension ID in version 1.16.4.32 I have performed. But one thing is clear. A clean install is the best method that causes the fewest problems. 4. This is a quotation from gorhill's wiki page about the legacy extension of uBlock Origin: Source: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/tree/master/dist#install Drag and drop the previously downloaded ublock0.firefox-legacy.xpi into Firefox (Pale Moon, New Moon and so on) is the recommended method there for installing an uBO xpi file. Same here by JustOff: Source: https://github.com/JustOff/ublock0-updater/issues/112 This type of update, by simply installing over an existing installation, may have worked in the past, but unfortunately, as shown in my above-quoted proof, it hasn't worked for a long time when it comes to the default filter lists. uBO's settings, self-created rules and self-added, custom filters remain intact as far as I noticed. But why did the users never realise this update issue in the past? The answer is quite simple. After installing or updating uBlock Origin, it automatically performs a download and installation of the internal list of all default filter lists (assets.json) quite promptly. So, a user always got the most recent version of this file from uBO's update server. Unfortunately, this file hasn't been updated for a long time and has become more and more obsolete. In my mod uBlock Origin Legacy, I therefore have removed the auto update of this file and started to maintain it by myself. That's why now a user immediately notice the issue that the new filter lists of my mod are not shown when installing an update of uBlock Origin Legacy over an existing installation and why a clean install is mandatory (and already was in the past). One thing I should still mention. When I make a recommendation that something should be done one way or another, I never do so without a specific reason. Cheers, AstroSkipper

  5. The legacy extension uBlock Origin - Installing over an existing one or performing a clean install? - An investigation by AstroSkipper As I already mentioned multiple times, I noticed in the past that installing an uBlock Origin update over an already existing installation didn't work properly. Therefore, I have examined both installation methods, installing over an existing one and performing a clean install, in more detail. Prerequisites: The untouched xpi files of the extensions uBlock Origin 1.16.4.30 and uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31b2, the browser New Moon 28.10.7a1 (32-bit) (2024-02-23), and a Windows XP computer with all internet connections blocked. Assertion: Installing the extension uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31b2 over an already existing installation of uBlock Origin 1.16.4.30 in New Moon 28.10.7a1 (32-bit) (2024-02-23) under Windows XP does not work properly. Proof: I disconnected my Windows XP computer completely from the internet. In a fresh profile of New Moon 28.10.7a1 (32-bit) (2024-02-23), I installed uBlock Origin 1.16.4.30. Here's a screenshot of the available default filter lists, taken right after installation: You can clearly see that in the "Privacy" group the "AdGuard URL Tracking Protection" filter list is provided. I marked it with a red rectangle. Next, I simply installed the xpi file of uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31b2 over the existing installation of uBlock Origin 1.16.4.30 what we normally call updating. Here's a screenshot of the available default filter lists, taken right after this kind of updating: And what can we see? Yes, the "AdGuard URL Tracking Protection" filter list is still provided in the "Privacy" group although this filter list has been removed in uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31b2. Even a browser restart does not change this situation. In contrast, here's a screenshot of the available default filter lists, taken right after performing a clean install of uBlock Origin 1.16.4.31b2: In this screenshot, we can clearly see that the "AdGuard URL Tracking Protection" filter list is no longer provided in the "Privacy" group after a clean install. I marked it with a green arrow. q.e.d. Conclusion: Installing over an already existing installation of the legacy extension uBlock Origin did not and does not work properly. And this issue has nothing to do with my mod. Therefore, a clean install is (and was even earlier) mandatory. And I'm pretty sure that the result of my proof can be generalised, i.e. that this statement is independent of browser and operating system version. More explanations on this matter and reasons why users of the uBlock Origin's legacy extension didn't notice this problem in the past, I will give later when time is available again. Kind regards, AstroSkipper

  8. I'm not surprised at all. As you know, complex postings with special links and code are currently very problematic due to the new life of the MSFN post editor. The longer the post, the sooner the well-known error message appears. BTW, any news for us about your obviously changed update policy in terms of UXP browsers and email clients or did I miss something?

  9. Looking at the quotation from the version history on their homepage, the support for Windows XP seems to have been restored in WINSCP 6.3.2 and that completely unexpected. Unbelievable and great! WinSCP is the FTP client I am using to connect my Android devices with my Windows XP computer via WLAN. I thought support for Windows XP had been discontinued for good. BTW, the most recent version 6.4 is already announced but not released yet. But it will probably not be long in coming.

  14. And here is the shortest way to update the installation of uBlock Origin Legacy properly: Backup all your settings using the "Back up to file" button on the page "Settings". Uninstall uBlock Origin Legacy and delete the ublock0.sqlite file in your profile subfolder extension-data. Restart the browser and install the new version of uBlock Origin Legacy. Restore all settings from your backup file. Greetings, AstroSkipper

  20. Hello @NojusK! I am using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Pro 1.75.0.1300 on one of my Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit partitions. Unfortunately, I have to make the same observation here. The update works, but the last update of the virus definition is v2024.03.13.12. Nothing more up-to-date is currently available. Here is a screenshot: However, we should wait some days to see if this is really the end. You know hope dies last. In any case, I totally agree Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Pro 1.75.0.1300 was and is the lightest antimalware programme ever. That's why I was so happy in July 2023 to have found a way to reactivate it. Just a tip. Save this last definition update to recover it for whatever reasons in the case it is no longer available via online update! Greetings, AstroSkipper

  25. No, those all are written very differently, especially the last one - which is rather emphasising on the subject of time. The first one is by me, I still consider only the main actors cast to be questionable. The second one is by another member, where he thinks the whole cast is poor. I'm very sorry, you don't feel the English language like it was your mother tongue, it's very obvious, even to the naked eye of the topic reader. And I'm not trying to "imply" anything, I'm laying out my personal, very obvious observations.

  32. I shouldn't trust Brave these days. I discovered it requests "GetFirmwareType", GetFirmwareType - "Retrieves the firmware type of the local computer". https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/winbase/nf-winbase-getfirmwaretype Why would a browser that declares itself "privacy oriented" want to know your exact firmware? Yes, it's for only one purpose, to bind your account to the PC you're on. More and more sophisticated tracking.

I think you mean the fourth post which contains the"Alphabetical list of programs that have recently been abandoned or should be avoided". But does 360 Total Security Essential 8.8.0.1119 really not work any longer? I personally assume it is still working but only cloud-based. Am I right?
    5 points
  45. 360 Total Security Essential 8.8.0.1119 will never get any Avira database updates again. As already stated in my quoted post, there were (and hopefully are) still some further antivirus engines which were used by this version. However, these were cloud-based. Therefore, no local updates are needed anymore. The last date of your updating from 12-12-2023 was probably the day when you got the obsolete Avira defintion updates from 2021. Other updates you'll presumably never see. All in all, this version is no longer what it used to be, and I haven't used it for a long time. Maybe, it is time for you to switch to another antimalware programme.
