As an example though, I don't think the OP would say something like "I had been damned or doomed." Doomed is more like it would mean the end for him. Like the total end. Hence "bad ending" in the dictionary. He would say more like "I had been cursed or jinxed." When one is jinxed or cursed it can be removed.
