I certainly hope the legacy add-on support is never removed from any of the browsers RT1 builds if at all possible. So let me make sure that I understand this. I have my mom and dad set up with 32-bit official Basilisk on Windows 7. Now that x86 development has stopped, at some point I will need to move them to Serpent 52 if they are to stay up to date. If I do so, will the news about Firefox legacy add-on changes mean that at some point, Classic Theme Restorer will stop working, even if I used an older version, with a version-modified install.rdf included? NotHereToPlayGames
Hmm, how to reply without stepping on toes? And apologies in advance if a toe gets stepped on. My parents are in their 70s. When it comes to computers and a parent in their 70s, you can not teach an old dog new tricks. And the very mention of "Classic Theme Restorer" tells me that your parents are the same way, correct? So you've compromised by providing an "updated" browser but adding an add-on so the parents "see what they used to see", correct? "Up-to-date" can mean so many things. They're running Win7 which ended support over a year ago! But you've provided them with a "warm fuzzy" feeling of being "secure" and "up-to-date" by having them use a BETA browser? Yes, I said BETA - because that IS what the RT1 browsers are!  I mean, the decision is obviously yours. But I can tell you what me and my brothers and sisters were all but "forced" to do. Answering computer questions from a parent in their 70s that doesn't "use" the computer for anything but email, reading news web sites, and playing solitaire gets OLD very very very quickly! Teaching the old dog to use any "add-on" turned out to be even worse! We bought them a Win10 computer, installed Chrome, and *FORCED* them to the *LEARN* Chrome. What used to be 30 questions per week is now only 3 per month - so THAT, my friend, is PROGRESS  A *beta* browser is NOT for a 70yr old! (there are exceptions!) The average 70yr old has ZERO use for an "add-on", they require pretty much everything "default".  Not likely the "two cents" you were hunting for -- but I am speaking from experience, I gave up a long time ago trying to "teach" my parents MyPal, Pale Moon, New Moon, Firefox. "Mileage may vary" Nope not stepping on toes at all. Here's what the situation is. My parents are in their late 70s. They migrated from a failing Windows XP machine to an i5 based Windows 7 machine. Now they used to play all sorts of 16-bit Windows games (ala Windows Entertainment Pack from the 1990s). These just worked on XP, so I wasn't about to just teach my folks how to use DOSBox and run customized Win 3x sessions for each game, or even set up Windows 3.1 in a virtual DOSBox for them to use - just too confusing. So I had the vendor preload Windows 7 x86 (and it's a sad thing too because he inadvertently installed 32 GB of RAM - I only asked him to install 4 GB). Anyway, their games run with aplomb! Next for browsing they use to use New Moon 27, so I decided to get them onto something a wee bit more modern, but that could also use an older Flash plugin. They play these online Flash games, and they love them. I'm sure that the sites aren't really maintained anymore, and won't ever be switching to HTML5. So I settled on Basilisk 32-bit. My folks really liked the looks of my Waterfox browser (which is Quantum based), so I used Classic Theme Restorer with the Photonic theme (I think it's from JustOff) to mimic Quantum. I did a pretty good job, and they love it. I almost wanted to use it. My mom can follow instructions fairly well, but for serious fixes, I just take care of it during visits. As it stands, there's not much to teach. For what they use it for, Basilisk just woks, and I'm sure Serpent substituted in will be fine. They used Pale Moon for quite some time, and then New Moon later. Again everything just worked for them, so there's no learning curve that I'm concerned with. I'm just worried that the customizations I have done will cease to work one day, if I switch them to Serpent, and make that dreaded upgrade when the add-on "death day" arrives. I hope that clarifies what I'm concerned about
VistaLover
@Jody Thornton The last 32-bit version of official Basilisk MCP (Moonchild) ever released was Basilisk-52.9.2020.11.25 That version was compiled without an auto-updater built-in, so will stay "put" there indefinitely... If you/your parents aren't overly concerned with security (the vendor of Win7 has stopped patching the OS - without a fee - since Jan 2020) and if their frequently visited sites are not in the habit of constant changes (usually for the worse), you/they should be covered where web compatibility is concerned for a few more months, at least... AFAIAA, that last version of Bk only supported the so-called "legacy" extensions (no WE), and the ones targeting pre-quantum Firefox would not have any problem installing there... Migrating the profile of Basilisk 52.9.2020.11.25 32-bit to Serpent 52.9.0 (32-bit) should be straightforward, except, perhaps, where stored account credentials are concerned, because MCP use different versions of the NSS library to the one used by @roytam1 ; more below... There are no plans here to adopt any breaking changes affecting the installation of pre-quantum Firefox legacy extensions (from CAA, GitHub or elsewhere...) on either Serpent/UXP or NM/UXP, as far as it's humanly possible - but no-one can guarantee you or your parents that an extension currently working fine on Basilisk-52.9.2020.11.25 (and which should behave similarly on latest Serpent 52) won't break in the future (near or distant, who knows?) when the browser engine/core itself progresses, under constant development, to tackle web compatibility issues of the future... If you are particularly concerned about CTT, I'm running v.1.7.8.2019.10.27 in latest St52 32-bit (buildID=20210319014823) and I currently see no issues whatsoever with it... But Aris has stopped developing it further, so the chances of a fix coming from him in the event of a future breakage (under St52) are slim... But, in my educated guess, major changes affecting the Australis interface of Basilisk (/Serpent) are quite improbable... Now, before migrating to St52 from Bk, make sure to first install a password exporting extension (e.g. https://github.com/JustOff/password-backup-tool/releases/tag/1.3.2 ) and export the stored accounts/passwords into a file; then, once on Serpent 52, install the same add-on there and import the same accounts/passwords from that saved file...  Starting with a new/pristine St52 profile would be optimal. only transferring afterwards vital pieces of the old Bk profile (bookmarks, passwords, extensions, history, etc.), but I realise people pressed-for-time opt for cross-app profile transplantation; fingers-crossed, there's very little that could go wrong in the migration from Bk52 -> St52, so hoping for the best! Hope I've helped... @ArcticFoxie : Serpent 52 is no more a BETA browser than the already used Basilisk 52 one... But I generally agree with the gist of your post! Not quite the same, but I distinctly remember how difficult it was for my late father (God rest his soul) to adopt, at 75 then, to the changes made from analog terrestrial TV to digital terrestrial broadcast (DVBT); we decided to let him continue using the old TV set he was familiar with, but connect it to an external DVBT standalone receiver, boy was that hard to teach him using that! Best regards... Later edit: 29 minutes ago, Jody Thornton said: I used Classic Theme Restorer with the Photonic theme (I think it's from JustOff) to mimic Quantum. You have certainly helped @VistaLover. And that was my thinking that if they stay on official Basilisk for the meantime, they will be fine. They don't stray to different sites all that much. No online banking is done AT ALL. When it comes time to switch to Serpent, there aren't many passwords they store at all, So I don't worry about that in the least bit whatsoever.
NotHereToPlayGames
Ah, Flash is another story. My dad visits a crossword puzzle site that used to be Flash but the web site has since updated. Our family had the opposite as far as Flash compatibility - it wasn't the in-their-70s parents that couldn't live without it but the Gen X sister! And for her it was her SCREEN SAVER program that she felt she "couldn't live without". So I logged her CPU temperatures and showed her how her laptop runs right around 34 to 38 degrees C and SKYROCKETS to 82 to 84 degrees C when the SCREEN SAVER is running. She, THANKFFULLY, hasn't used a (d@mn) screen saver since
