StartIsBack++ 2.9

SIB++ 1.04 has fixed the error "This program does not have a file associated with it for performing this action"

for now. Hopefully, this will be permanent.

Edit-not 5 minutes later, same error exists. "Settings" or any Windows 10 apps have the same explorer.exe error. I'm half tempted to go back to a Windows 8.1 image where SIB worked flawlessly with no issues of ANY kind.

This means some "registry cleaner" deleted entries which are required to launch metro apps.
It's not just windows apps, settings has same error. Disabling SIB, issue goes away. I don't use registry cleaners except CCleaner after uninstalling a program. Perhaps CCleaner is the culprit? I'll uninstall SIB with Revo and make sure all registry entries are deleted and reinstall. Thanks for the suggestion and I'll try again.

I've used CCleaner for years but indeed, all registry cleaners including the one in CCleaner, cause more harm than good.

CCleaner was the culprit. Been using SIB++ v1.04 for about a week and no more error and no more using CCleaner's registry cleaner. Thanks for this frustrating issue coming to a conclusion.

Still having a REALLY hard time using SIB with windows 10 and UAC disabled with normal account that has admin rights.

Searching for windows update or update does not show windows update

It does show installed updates program, however not able to start it up when UAC is disabled.

Calculator still not showing up as calc.exe mspaint etc and other files are no problems.

The green ones in this picture for firewall options is possible to launch with uac disabled, the red ones are not.

Bare in mind, SIB and UAC does not go very well in hand in all the machines i have tested so far, all other programs without SIB works just fine when UAC is disabled

2 upgraded

2 fresh install

I cant even enter UAC via SIB with UAC disabled.

Test are all on Danish version of windows 10 x64

And as a suggestion, would you consider implementing Quick Launch for all windows version you made SIB for?

With your reverse and coding skills I'm sure you could come up with something, to toggle it on/off with a simple click from SIB next to it?

This is quick launch

Like it was in windows xp days :)

If you want Qick Launch then just create a new Toolbar then paste "%Userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch" and hit enter, then unlock your taskbar and drag it over to the left side, right click on it and uncheck "Show Text" and "Show title" and your done.

Hello,

I am trying to use this substitute start menu because Windows 10 won't let me pin specific programs to the left-hand side of the start menu. StartIsBack++ is not allowing that either. Please let me know if I am doing something wrong or if this is the actual functionality of the software (i.e. it follows Win 10 in not allowing pinning to the left-hand side of the menu).

Thanks in advance

You can do it in SiB++ by right-clicking an item and choosing "Pin to Start Menu".

So following up on my post i made yesterday here. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/174021-startisback-10/page-12#entry1108115

I decided to test http://www.classicshell.netyes thats right the free version which is outstanding.

So all the problems i have with SIB++ is totally none existent in classicshell.

My files cannot be opened with uac disabled, no problems

Windows update(ALL WORKING with/without UAC)

DmYM52s.png

Windows firewall(ALL WORKING with/without UAC)

4Qw8ffe.png

My search for files/documents( ie calc.exe), no problems

zqPEMcH.png

My lock/logout/shutdown/reboot via remote/RPD windows, no problems

12VXQna.png

In fact classic shell find all files you have relation to (used/or attached in start menu INSTANT) without having search index enabled SIB++ does not do that, for all machines i have tested so far, which is A LOT.

I'm not going to change to classic shell, since i just would like to have SIB++ work as it did for windows 8.1 which it does not in this currently state.

So that's why I decided to test classic shell and see if I was nuts or it actually IS bugs/errors with SIB++ and windows 10, my conclusion bugs/errors/ and or features not implemented yet with SIB++

So Tihiy, would you please consider checking all the things i mentioned already? and maybe look up what classic shell does if you cannot figure it out, because it simply does not work as it used to do in win 8.1.

Thanks ;)

Edit

Just found an comparision, maybe it can be usefull i dont know?

That doesn't work for me. When I try, for instance the program "Firefox", it does not show up on the left-hand side of the start menu. When I switch to the Win10 view, it DOES show up on the right-hand side of the menu as a tile. Just like in Windows 10.

It's working for me (attached screenshots). Haven't tested with Firefox because I don't have it installed.

++1.1.0

New version with new skin for those who don't like white color.

Your feedback is appreciated!

Nice work mate, I take it you were not able to have this full glass because of restrictions in your present msstyles implementation, I noticed previously that some classes necessary to make it full glass will not be read from the msstyles if placed in the SiB styles folder, not sure if this is still the case or if that is something you can change.

Why yes, it's full glass but search. It's now possible to use glass for app list parts in stand-alone skins with 'composited' bool set.

Hi Tihii, looks good! Some problems may arise with white text and bright background color of the start menu. Perhaps adding some shadows to the text if the background color is light would be possible?

Also, please consider an open animation in similar style to the native start menu. The sudden appearance is a sore. :)

OK tested it now, not sure if it's just me but when I do a search the search panel is missing, it just shows see more results and then nothing above that, all the other styles and my custom themes still work fine.

Also a question, when using 'composited' bool where is it reading the properties that were Start Menu > Menus > Basic > KeyBoard:TreeView?

You can adjust the color, opacity as well as add blur to resolve any issues with readability.

Maybe it's custom skin related. Are you running one?

When using 'composited' it reads properties from part 17 (NSCHost).
