dencorso Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 The IE6 update is needed to workaround the following problem: KB972582 - You receive an empty dialog box when you run the "Rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll, DoOrganizeFavDlg" command I integrate both the IE6 and IE8 updates using HFSLIP. On my running system I don't try to update browseui.dll and shdocvw.dll as these files are only upped in version number. Using an older version of these files is fine as these files are not used by Internet Explorer 8. With all due respect: They are not used by IE8, but they are used by Explorer.exe (the windows explorer)... and, on inspection, they have small differences only, from version to version, but they sure aren't just upped in version number. Nor just that and different checksums and PE Timestamps, of course, either...
heinoganda Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) If you are interested in the current "browseui.dll" and "shdocvw.dll" files from KB3124275, I have appropriate update packages (MS Update Engine) created for the following languages: DEU, ELL, ENU, ESN, HUN, ITA, NLD, PLK and PTB. The test with the command "Rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll, DoOrganizeFavDlg" have passed these updates positively. (No empty dialog box) If necessary, please message to me. @dencorso The files are available in different language versions. Might be due. Edited March 15, 2016 by heinoganda 1

glnz Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 dencorso - you wrote two above: BTW, hmuellers is henceforward banned because of having destroyed forum content (whatever one posts becomes part of MSFN). Oh, no! I'm sure you have good reason for your ban, but hmuellers's updated post aggregated everything needed by those of us not on your technical level. He distilled your wisdom and that of heinoganda, jaclaz and many others here. If the US and Iran can reach some kind of treaty (dubious though it may be), may I ask you to offer hmuellers an opportunity to redeem himself? On condition that he keeps his post (the one you copied two above) updated. If not, does anyone else at your level of expertise want to take on the burden? Just a note that to us tourists, hmuellers's post layout and formatting was very concise and usable. Sorry, and thanks.
SD73 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 What glnz said. Hmuellers posts were instrumental for getting me going with this. I do hope he can redeem himself. He left some big shoes for someone else to fill if not. That said, this is a terrifically talented and nice group of people to work with. Guys like Heinoganda and others have offered me a wealth of help offline too.

Well the files I replaced were from 2008, so I guess those later versions have to be worth having! As long as you replace the versions in the DLLCache folder as well as those in the System32 folder, you shouldn't have any trouble with System File Protection.
bluebolt Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 My thanks go to member Bersaglio for the XP-compatible .net framework updates (and associated information) posted in this thread.

Installing the catalog file that was included with the updated files will permanently solve the issue. You will need Microsoft's SignTool.exe, a 314 KB file which is usually bundled with a large (600 MB+) download. The file can also be found on RyanVM.net with a Google search. roytam1 Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 > You should remove .NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1 if installed, as both no longer receive updates. But if you have programs that compiled for .net 1.0 or 1.1, you should not remove them since .net 2.0 or later runtimes are unable to run .net 1.0/1.1 programs.
glnz Posted January 14, 2016 Author Posted January 14, 2016 roytam - as I removed .NET 1.0 and 1.1 on advice here and haven't yet seen a problem, what types of programs need it? Could you give some common examples?I have Office 2003, Outlook Express 6, very old Acrobat 5, and very old Adobe Photoshop 1.0.1. (The others are unimportant and seem to run anyway, like imgburn.)
Monroe Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Just to add a few lines about .NET Framework ... in late December I decided to remove .NET Frame from my XP setup. The highest version that I had installed was v2.0 but I decided to remove v1.1 and v2.0 ... everything. I do remember a few software programs requiring .NF v1 but I can no longer remember exactly what programs they were. I am sure these few programs are probably still on my computer ... however, so far I have not noticed or run into any problems with .NET Framework completely removed. I have always tried to mostly find programs that don't require .NET Frame....
