February 5, 20188 yr I queried that as well here. The links in that thread have now been fixed. You asked whether you need to have Java, and the answer now is probably actually no. Java-based programs need it to run of course, but they often include their own bundled version anyway. There are still websites that use it for things like animations, as an alternative to Flash, but they are getting very few and far between now.
February 6, 20188 yr 15 hours ago, glnz said: Thomas S - Many thanks. I'll try later this week. But I am curious - what if I had no Java? What would that do to my life? 14 hours ago, glnz said: Thomas - to get the .gz file, I went to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/es/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html?printOnly=1 but it continuously says I'm unauthorized to download. This is after I temporarily permitted all cookies and scripts on the page, etc. What am I doing wrong? SHould I get the .gz file elsewhere? (Meantime, I re-installed earlier version 152.) Thanks. Don't be confused, first be sure you need Java. If you do not really know that you need it (for very special inet sites with Java content or for an special program that needs Java) YOU DO NOT NEED IT. To install and activate it by default is a fault (to much security problems). So lean back, stay calm and drink tea or coffee For downloading Java (every version) you need to accept the licence before you can download. And that will not work without cookie etc.
February 6, 20188 yr Author Thomas and Dave-H - With your help, I successfully copied new version 162 into the folder from my recent installation of 152. And "About" says 162! But my life has not changed one iota. Thanks. Edited February 6, 20188 yr by glnz

June 7, 20188 yr Hi all, USB 3.0 works, http://reboot.pro/topic/21784-usb-30-boot-xp-sp3/ have a nice day Dietmar PS: I try to enable nvme support and boot for xp. There is an universal nvme.sys driver from Microsoft for Windows 2003 32 bit (6.1.7600.16385). Via dependecy Walker you can see, that Windows 2003 server 32 bit is supported too. May be simple copying storport.sys to driver folder in xp will work. Edited June 7, 20188 yr by Dietmar

And would it hurt to install it anyway, even if I don't really need it? Phil

June 8, 20188 yr Author Got an email from PayPal that I need to update my browser. On the PayPal website, it says: Quote To meet the new PCI Security Standard (PCI DSS) required by all websites that hold payment data, PayPal will no longer support outdated web browsers. You may need to update your browser to continue accessing PayPal. Please follow the steps below to update your desktop and mobile browsers. Instructions to update desktop browsers Please visit our sandbox site from each of your browsers. If the page loads, you are already upgraded. If the page doesn't appear, please follow the steps below: Identify your current browser version Confirm recommended desktop operating system and browsers Update your desktop browser I use Firefox everywhere, and, on my XP machine, it's ESR version 52.8.1 (32-bit). If I use it to go to PayPal's indicated "sandbox site", Firefox gives me the error page for unsafe page. So my XP's Firefox is unable to read whatever flavor of security PayPal is now using. Do you think the new MS update for TLS 1.2 will help? Or is that irrelevant to the issue? (And how come a smarty-pants "we know more than you" forum like MSFN lost all its posts between February 6 and yesterday? Forgot to back up? Or, in the spirit of XP forever, did someone just print them to a pdf?) Edited June 8, 20188 yr by glnz
