I agree with another user who posted about his antivirus preference being himself.

- I use very little p2p.

- I have a hardware firewall.

- I have used the nLite program to remove over 400 MBs from my Windows XP Home SP1 source.

- I use FireFox.

I mean, most of the common things in XP that have the capability of exploiting your PC to malicious files and such are removed by nLite. I am not a fool when it comes to e-mails. I do not get any e-mail from anyone not on my contacts list and I inspect the subject headers carefully. Casual: "Hey, haven't e-mailed you in a while". Suspicious: "Pics of some moviestar". I am not fooled. And I don't exactly have a group of bad hackers after me, doing anything from port scanning to bouncing trojans left, right and centre. I have no worries. But in an attempt to prove myself wrong, I will get AVG and see if I have anything. I will let you know.

hey!...guys check this out just think about it what kind of anti virus you want to used just for your info :P

****10-25 August 2004 *****

The test was made on 10-25 August 2004, using Windows 2000 SP4 on a CELERON 2400 Mhz, 256MB DDRAM.

All programs tested had the latest versions, upgrades and updates and they were tested using their full scanning capabilities e.g. heuristics, full scan etc.

The 76556 virus samples were chosen using VS2000 according to Kaspersky, F-Prot, RAV, Nod32, Dr.Web, Sweep, BitDefender, E-Trust and McAfee antivirus programs. Each virus sample was unique by virus name, meaning that AT LEAST 1 antivirus program detected it as a new virus.

ALL virus samples were unpacked and the only samples that were kept were the ones that were packed using external-dos-packers (that means not winzip, winrar, winace etc).

The virus samples had the correct file extension using a special program (Renexts) and were unique, according to checksum32 filesize.

Most "fake" virus samples were removed, as well as "garbage" files.

The program PER was not tested because there was no english demo version available.

The programs BOClean , VET , Titan , RisingAV , Ikarus and Freedom were not tested because there was no demo version available.

The program InVircible did not include a "typical" scanner-function and could not be tested.

The program V-Catch checks only mail accounts and could not be tested.

The following file types were used.

BAT, ÂÉÍ, CLA, CLASS, CLS, COM, CSC, DAT, DOC, ELF, EML, EXE, HLP, HQX, HTA, HTM, IMG, INF, INI, JS, MAC, MDB, MSG, OLE, PHP, PIF, PL, PPT, PRC, REG, SCR, SH, SHS, SMM, STI, TD0, TPU, VBA, VBS, WBT, XLS, XMI, XML.

The virus samples were divided into these categories, according to the type of the virus :

File = BeOS, FreeBSD, Linux, Palm, OS2, Unix, BinaryImage, BAS viruses.

MS-DOS = MS-DOS and HLL*. viruses.

Windows = Win.*.* viruses.

Macro = Macro and Formula viruses.

Malware = DoS, Constructors, Exploit, Flooders, Hoax, Jokes, Nukers, Sniffers, Spoofers, Virus Construction Tools, Virus Tools, Corrupted, Droppers, Intended, PolyEngines.

Script = BAT, Corel, HTML, Java, Scripts, VBS, WBS, Worms, PHP, Perl viruses.

Trojans-Backdoors = Trojan and Backdoor viruses.

I've heard that Kaspersky relies entirely on it's database though. It doesn't use heuristics. So while it may be the best for an on-demand scan, it would not be for real-time scanning of an unknown virus...

This is why I don't use Kaspersky anymore, it may be very thorough with on-demand scanning, but Kaspersky's real-time scanning slows down everyday computer usage greatly.

Well!

Here's my report. (no offense but I need replies)

AVG:

Are you, AVG users, aware of this $ZQM.AVG in your %TEMP% (size = 507 MB). What does it do?

KAV:

Are you, KAV users, satisfied with your IE performance?

BitDefender:

Are you, BitDefender users, satisfied with an app that is slower than NAV?

Thanks in advance.

Symantec Addict

yes i'm a bit defender user and i'm very :thumbup happy!! :thumbup

bye bye

All AV's even from the 90's do basic virus detection (monitoring what the apps do, won't let them do bad things) If it relies more on it's signatures than another AV? Hard to tell, but it's updated very often, and the viruses are added quickly to the signatures. I have yet to see a virus that it didn't catch.

I don't actually use dit for on demand scanning much, as once your data ha all been scanned once most likely there is none, and as I'd come across it, it would see it anyways. As for it slowing down the PC, I'd have to say exactly the inverse, it's MUCH better than norton (and most others) stuff wrt.

I have to disagree. Maybe it's just me, but after installing Kaspersky, my computer was much slower. Once I lowered the real-time scanning level it was much better, but still slower than every other AV product.

Symantec, AVG and eTrust are all faster than Kaspersky concerning real-time scanning, which I rely on, because as you said; after you scan your computer you'd expect to encounter the virus whilst using the computer for everyday tasks.

It's for these everyday tasks my computer usage is my primary priority, not AV scanning. Especially when transferring files over a network, Kaspersky is slow, scanning every file even if it's not directly accessed by me :(
