  1. I see a couple but I'll let the Win9x experts take over.
  2. Newer hardware and XP will be tough. If I wanted to use XP I wouldn't want to try and get a board with UEFI on it, such as that Asus board. Finding non-UEFI boards has become troublesome lately, as I also deal with people who want to use 32bit Windows 7 on a new computer but the OS isn't supported. XP is even more unsupported if such a thing is possible. So I'm mostly only finding boards that people don't want, such as ones with Atom or AMD CPUs.
  3. I never had any problems but I never use any USB key larger than 1GB.
  4. I am not aware of a way to install the OS remotely, that is without an existing server in place already. However, it would be possible if the client can install the Server OS for you and enable RDP, you can use RDP to do just about everything else. For example you could enable WDS and install MDT which then can deploy Windows 7 to the computers on the server's network.
  5. Welcome to the MSFN!
  6. Wow just doing an update to Windows 8 Pro x64, DISM barfed up a slew of errors... I saved the portion of the DISM.log file for the DISM session the command was run in and is available upon request.
  7. So in Windows 8 the TPM is always enabled? I recall that it still uses a driver to use it. Can't you just disable or uninstall the driver in Device Manager?
  8. Well it looks like Windows 8.1 isn't really ready for RTM, since they are still busy debugging it, so this will give them a chance to meet their October deadline. As a former developer, who had to try to work within the arbitrary deadlines imposed from on high, I feel really sorry for the W8.1 developers. I also feel very sorry for the three W8.1 app developers and see no reason why anyone would want to join them. No it is the standard procedure MS uses for RTM an operating system. Basically MS makes the annoucement that a product is RTM but it takes 2-3 days before anyone can actually download it. I don't know why MS just waits until it is available for download before telling the world that it is out.
  9. I can't even imagine what the tech world would look like if Microsoft went away... Heck, the world by itself! PS: Windows 8.1 is RTM today. http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/bloggingwindows/archive/2013/08/27/readying-windows-8-1-for-release.aspx
  10. Just like how MS will publish updates that do not show up in the catalog?
  11. Someone wrote a poem about Windows 8 (some language) http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?47616-I-Hate-Windows-8
  12. I wonder how Lenovo plans to get away with it. It isn't allowed for a program like that to be pre-installed on a PC sold into the retail channel. It can only be used with Embedded or Enterprise SKUs.
  13. Take a look at this thread for determining booting speed issues. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/140247-trace-windows-7-bootshutdownhibernatestandbyresume-issues/
  14. The fastest deployment I have personally seen is deploying an XPe image to an SSD using DISM took just over 40 seconds.
  15. Windows 8.1 has not been RTM yet. It is likely it will be after this August 23rd date in this "report" http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-81-final-internal-testing-date-is-august-23rd-rtm-to-follow Its a misnomer (sic) in these articles that refer to MS as "shipping" stuff to OEMs. They don't ship anything anymore by default like they used to. If after something hits RTM you can special order it on physical media, but there is a delay of a few weeks. I don't know why anyone would need to order it since you can just download everything and make your own DVDs and CDs.
  16. Office 2010 is a retail product. You will need to purchase it to get a product key. If you want to be able to use Office for free, consider looking into alternate products such as Apache's OpenOffice. http://www.openoffice.org/
  17. Diablo 2? There are a couple things you can try. Set the properties of the shortcut Compatibility Options to Windows XP SP2, then Run the Video Test application. You can also try running the game in Windowed mode.
  18. To do the booting you'll need a "server" of course. If you don't have a Windows Server, you can use Linux like PXELinux.
  19. Windows 7 had this problem too with some updates. You didn't get an error from DISM on the CMD screen but buried in the DISM.log you'd find the error. Which updates are you specifically having a problem with?
  20. 1em = amount of pixels that the default font size of the browser uses. So if the browser you are using has a default font size of 16px, then 1em = 16px. So it is possible that ALL browsers are rendering the size correctly but some are using different default font sizes. I've always used px instead of em.
  21. Some programs have an options to disable that from happening. What program is it?

  23. At first it sounds like a virus, or a system that was cleaned from a redirecting virus. What is the operating system on these computers? (this isn't the forum for technical discussion)

  25. Some guys on Technet are saying they are not getting this error when running ADK for 8.1 from Win 8.1 Preview as their OS.
