  1. Ref: The thread was split to create a new one.
  2. I've heard this from time to time, but I am not seeing this ever happening. Mount and unmount time for me is less than a minute... But it may be more system related. Anyways, to OP what kind of size are we talking about here? I look at my Windows 8 Pro x64 image which has about 20 updates and a dozen of drivers and it is 4.1GB, while the vanilla image is 3.1GB. Actually now that you mention it... that is quite a size difference! Definately larger than the stuff I put into it. Hmmmm...
  3. I had noticed, in the past, that some files have one of the 3 dates "changed" when you open a file but don't modify it at all. No real examples... But maybe you (op) can explain exactly what you are seeing.
  4. Sounds like you said "unspecified programs" but you could have just said "programs" ... http://www.computerhope.com/starthlp.htm
  5. Use this for your WinPE language stuff. <component name="Microsoft-Windows-International-Core-WinPE" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <SetupUILanguage> <UILanguage>en-us</UILanguage> </SetupUILanguage> <InputLocale>en-us</InputLocale> <UILanguage>en-us</UILanguage> <SystemLocale>en-us</SystemLocale> <UILanguageFallback>en-us</UILanguageFallback> <UserLocale>en-us</UserLocale> </component> If you still get the initial language selection screen, then your XML isn't being found. How are you installing it on a real PC?
  6. I wanted to comment on this link which was posted elsewhere. The "exclusive" Windows 8.1 Features list... http://www.askvg.com/exclusive-windows-8-1-features-list/ Please tell me that isn't the new logo... Most of the items are pretty meh to me... except this. Wow a calculator! What's so special about a Metro Calculator? Are they going to remove calc.exe? Or would they brag about selling an OS with 2 different calculator apps? And... Sound Recorder. If that ends up being true... and it is similar (or the same, yeah right) as SoundRec from Win9x, I know a lot of people would be happy with its return.
  7. Notebooks are totally a different subject I think. Look at the quote from the article jaclaz posted: Of course, notebooks are changing their orientation multiple times a day. Put on desk, put in bag, toss in car or bike, bounce around, etc. I won't even want to bring up the fact that so many people drop their notebooks... Was it at some point that notebook hard drives had some technology that allowed it to withstand moving about so much? If so, wouldn't it make sense that desktop hard disks might have gotten some of those advantages at some point, which is why they don't talk about needing to reformat before changing how your HDD is positioned?
  8. I would be interested in the answer as well. I have this happen for one certain situation and the current method involves someone needing to be there to click the button on the warning screen. I had looked into it in the past but most people were pointing towards automating cursor movement which I feel is cheating.
  9. In my experience, I never got Half Life to work in XP at all! Although, I expect there are other versions available, since you can run Half Life on XP and Windows 7 at least. I think it depends on the version you have. You may have one of the optimized/newer (Steam, Gog, retail) version, as opposed to the original CD when it was released. Because I would expect the original one (written for Win9x) wouldn't have any special pointers in it.
  10. MS ruined the MSDN/Technet forums completely it is UNUSABLE. I'm fairly new to those but I was also surprised. I think the biggest problem is that it is difficult to identify with the responders because their user names are below their post, it is very small and their avatars are very small.
  11. I have no picture proof, but an old friend had built a mini PC where the hard drive was held entirely by about a dozen rubber bands.
  12. I don't think it was introduced for that purpose. Maybe you could say the same thing of L2 cache on a CPU? http://books.google.com/books?id=bRpSUetqwc8C&pg=PT360&lpg=PT360&dq=technically+pointer+encoding+isn%27t+a+code+quality+benefit&source=bl&ots=d6lb1dVrMs&sig=EN-TyAHeAlcJ9WhbnynulR2W_cw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=3AfDUfLwLtHirAfq3YCQCw&ved=0CDMQ6AEwAQ
  13. It may be possible that the sound is the result of a keyboard buffer overflow. Did you try a different keyboard?
  14. [emphasis added]That would be quite a revelation, that early on Microsoft was promising that you could install Windows 8 without Metro. Breaking that promise can only have contributed to the anger and disappointment that has met the version of Windows 8 that eventually got released. Agreed. It sounds like the OEMs were led down a primrose path and believed the next Windows would not cause upheaval, but quite the contrary, be the proverbial shot in the arm. I'm not sure what conference he is talking about, it might be a workshop at //build/ 2011 which is also around the first time I remember hearing about this disaster, it was summer 2011 ... Microsoft has never really made concessions to OEMs regarding the desktop OSes. All that stuff about custom appliances and GUIs are always licensed under the Embedded side of things and would have nothing to do with the run of the mill Windows. I don't even know what Windows 8 Embedded can do, no one wants regular Windows 8 enough to have that kind of demand. And when you want to say "yeah but the touch support" and that's just that Start Screen. ISVs would be in the same spot as if they were using Windows 7 Embedded since they still have to write their own software because they won't be using Modern apps or the Start Screen for their custom software right? Anyways, that discussion must have been from early on as obviously it sounds more like how Server 2012 operates.
  15. It doesn't really work like that. You could technically run an old version of IPB for as long as you wanted and shouldn't have a problem. I have also seen some formatting changes when going from page to page, etc... It is possible for some formatting to be "missing" if an include loads the Driver Error, for example some had seen that show up in the Attachment section below composing a post. Also, I say in GD sometimes the board will mark threads as read even if I haven't looked at them yet.
  16. What were your temperatures like before the fan controller started malfunctioning?
  17. I recall a time back then I had a dual boot with XP and Server 2003. Feels like a lifetime ago.
  18. It looks like your camera uses the Apple implementation of MJPEG. As noted on Wikipedia, Microsoft expects these types of files to be AVIs. However, it also appears that this type of media file isn't used enough to have contined support to be included for WMP in Windows 7, as TechNet also shows it won't play the AVI type either. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpromedia/thread/66b7ebfb-76f7-4a1d-bf68-f76ba3e852c9/ Here is the homepage for FFDShow, maybe it will help for this kind of file: http://www.ffdshow.info/ Or maybe it still works in Quicktime.
  19. I'm not sure that searching for EXEs and MSIs is the way to go. I use a "control file" to determine what is listed and executed. For example, an INI or XML file. So you have the paths to your applications stored in the INI file, which you can change just the INI to show different options over time. I use this INI trick to control my app installer, which is an EXE that is in WinPE, and the INI file is on the server. Also, I'm sure you meant it but you need Checkboxes for multiple selection, as radio buttons are for single selection. Moving to appropriate forum.
  20. I had a feeling that was it. I don't have any of my motherboards in chassis when I test them, but I remember this being a problem a while back. As far as multiple sound cards, the only OS I got them to work in was XP 64bit. I did some searching around and all I can find about the behaviours of the sound cards is driver related. Also I do see many complaints of people wanting the audio "streaming" to go back to how it was in XP. Apparently, something had changed starting with Vista, which might be related to the other issues some of us have encountered going from XP to 7.
  21. Where do you want this topic to be moved to? I am not familiar with PSF (PStream) files either.
  22. Are you connecting to the rear or front panel audio? I just tested with some cheapo speakers, connecting to the green rear jack and it was detected as analog. Its not the same board but is the same audio controller.
  23. It appears that Intel supports XP for this board, or at least has drivers available.
  24. You might have to ask in the linked thread in Tihiy's post. I'm sure there was a reason for it.
