depends.... its possible that you may not at all have access to what you need to fix this. You need to login to your MySQL (or whatever db you use) as root and assign the relevant privileges to the userid under which your db is being accessed by your forum. If its mysql, you have a choice of mode of use... PhpMyAdmin ---> easiest MySQL Administrator ---> easy (downloadable freely as the client to manage the mysql server) command shell ---> extremely unlikely you'll be given access to this

Lastly, one who has paid for his software will stop at nothing to use it to its fullest extent. You wouldn't buy program X for half a grand, and then use a freeware for something programX can do - you would instead weigh in on the support channel to make a patch that makes that errant function better than the best in market.
