  1. If I'm not wrong, you have the same thing posted here as well. Nor does this topic belong in XP Visual Styles.....
  2. Norton Ghost is the best option, especially if you get it alongwith Norton SystemWorks, because you get al whole range for a combined-cheap price. It is easy to use, has a DOS version (for when windows won't boot and you need to restore after booting from a DOS floppy).
  3. Outlook is my favourite - in its 2003 avatar, it has pretty much eliminated all old accusations against it (yes, there still are few, but not much). I add the Incredimail for Outlook plugin, to get the best experience. On non-windows systems, thunder-bird gets my vote. Also, on systems where Outlook2003 can't be used (like the pre-win2k OSes - all win9x), thunderbird is the better option, choosing security over features.
  4. Could you please detail how you did that? I'm genuinely surprised at it going below the 15 MB psychological barrier.
  5. Yes, that's where you'd put support.cab (replace previous version with this one). If you don't as yet see the .CAB (since it is an EXE), use winrar to extract.
  6. So no one cares about harry potter anymore? If we all are just tech-only geeks, with no interests of reading books - (let me steal XtremeMaC's line here, sorry XtremeMaC) - we need to take a good vacation.
  7. Compress that as an SFX (using winrar) to extract itself silently to a known folder during setup (so that you can use 2 commands after that to install it) - compressing will bring its size down, close to 15.5 MB.
  8. Well, the tools exist for your own use - you want to update your existing support tools on your WXP CD, you go ahead with it. But there's no need for putting that on the uA CD - no real purpose that has been mentioned here that requires the Support Tools.
  9. Please confirm whether that was just a typo there. You have to use hide='true' Moreover, you might get the CMD flashes from the batch-files you are trying to run, in addition to any command-line commands.
  10. Oh! now this is good news. Instead of needing 3 multi-boot options, 1 will suffice.
  11. Plenty of things down here dude.... You'll certainly learn a lot of things. Welcome to MSFN.
  12. Make an ISO copy of the CD - that will do an ASPI-based (as opposed to file-based) copy, and will retain copy-protection. Open the ISO in an ISO-editor, and extract the boot-sector.
  13. There's no real limit: If you start the entries with 000005, you should be able to go all the way to 999995. So you can fly really high. It is simply to put them in order. And there's no requirement to sequence the numbers by 5 either - you can give 001,002,003 and so on.
  14. Its perfectly OK to do this. For most purposes, the procedures for XP/2k are the same. BTW, I believe I saw a 2Kcreate thread somewhere - you might like to try it.
  15. Yes, despite using that option, VPC2004 is slower. VMware is far more full-featured, VPC is very easy to use. That's (sort-of) an immediate noticeable difference. My uA install takes 25 mins to complete on my real machine, 28 mins on VMware, and 80 mins on VPC. And I have integrated the drivers for the Virtual machine in each case. All conditions were similar, HD was fine and de-fragmented.
  16. It looks like the VLK and other editions follow diametrically opposite qualifications to use windows update. If using a VLK, your key needs to be in the "approved" list to use WU. If using a retail/OEM pack, your key shouldn't be in the "black-listed" range, for WU to work.
  17. Ah good! So you put the install in its place.
  18. All help is found right there. "gpedit.msc" is the Group Policy Editor tool, and each setting has detailed help. As far as security is concerned, you can do as much as possible, but nothing is ever un-breakable. You might like to hire a Security Consultant for more detailed analysis and recommendations of your specific environment, and to implement the security.
  19. If this is WinXP pro, you have a tool for doing just this and more. In the Run box, type "gpedit.msc" and then have a thorough exploration. SP2 adds a few more controls to that list, so you should apply it.
  20. I think you need to take a good vacation.
  21. But definitely, moving to a higher configuration will help. Gamers suggest having atleast 30 fps at the resolution you want to play. But 60 fps is the ideal - because, one moment there could be nothing on the screen but trees shaking in the breeze or the sea calmly lapping the shores - the next moment you get to fight a wicked lot of monsters and baddies of all shapes and sizes, which is when your frame rate takes a beating. At that time, if you were having at a frame-rate of 55 fps, you'd go down to a playable 25-30 fps, otherwise if you began out itself at a low fps, your eyes start seeing slow-ups (the eyes need atleast 24 fps to see a moving picture). So you see, while running it on recommended specs (or thereabouts) might just play the game, you aren't taking full advantage of it. For good running of a game, you should ideally have 2x the minimum requirements (which leads to insane calculations with the newer class of games).
  22. Hey, We've all heard of firefox and mozilla browser. But have any of you got the feeling that it was a bit too slow? (loading, page-rendering, etc.) Now don't start flaming me about that "slow" comment - this is only the opinion of some people I met. Well, the fact is that the firefox and mozilla browsers, and the thunderbird mail-client, and all their off-shoots for Mac OSX are based on a HTML rendering engine called "gecko". This was meant to be superfast and is a free and open-source engine. The above aren't the only gecko-based browsers. There are more (faster?) browsers also around that are as good/secure as mozilla range of offerings. The K-Meleon browser at http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net is one. It hasn't seen a new release since december 2003. It is the windows port of a linux browser called galeon. Well, I recently checked it out because I started to tire of firefox, but needed a similar browser. - Supports theming/skinning. - Supports mouse-gestures. - It is as fast as firefox for page-rendering. - It is super-fast while loading (starting up). - Unbelievably small download and install size. - Has tabbed (they call it layers) browsing and pop-up blocking. - K-Meleon is gecko-based, therefore is an off-shoot of firefox - Most (not all, no download manager) of the other features firefox provides. - Has a minimal UI clutter, but the graphical features you need are still there for when you need them. - Easily configurable through its interface, as well as plain-text configuration files (therefore suited for unattended). - It is free and open-source. I found it good enough to switch to it, because anyway WindowsUpdate and some other MSN-passport sites aren't compatible with the gecko engine, so if some sites (very rare) don't display properly on K-Meleon, I can always use IE. Let's not make this thread a slanging match between IE and mozilla fans, we all know that everybody has their own opinion. This is an invitation to you people to check out a new option, that you may not have been aware of before. Also, the K-Meleon project is looking out for developers to join their team - so those who want to have some experience know what to do. The bottom-line : If you liked firefox, but had a few gripes with it, K-Meleon is worth a good, hard look.
  23. ha ha ha..... good set of uses you got there.... But when the quote is small, and when possible, please quote it directly - don't link to external sites more than it is necessary.
  24. You might need to place the activation file at this location on the CD to have it pre-activated (done automatically): $OEM$\$DOCS\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\OFFICE\DATA Place the opa11.dat in there, do the rest of your normal slip-streaming processes, and you're done with it.
  25. If you have acrobat already installed, its possible that the "/A" might not work. Also, since you say that using "/?" gives errors as well, check if there are any spaces in the exe you are trying to run. If there are, then this is how it should be run: Note the quotes around the file-name. Please also check if you had tried steps 1-3 properly.Hoping this helps... The tutorial above SHOULD work without errors on all languages in all situations. It is useful for English (and other languages) version of AR6 which hasn't yet been updated. EDIT : AWWW!!! saw that you got it to work just now. Well, then this post serves as a trouble-shooter for those who run into errors.
