i hate when people do that. just because they dont have a up to date piece of hardware, doesnt make them a bad person. i myself use a ball mouse, i like it so much better than a laser mouse, just because small defects in the mouse pad dont screw it up but i do have a laser mouse, and really, if the conditions are right i dont notice a difference.

Windows 98 PowerPack v3.0 released [details itt]
prx984 replied to jimmsta's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
wow really? that many dependencies? dang i gotta check that out. ill try it in a virtual pc later on tonight. im so tired right now thanks for letting me know all that. ------------------------------------------------- edit: im gonna test it now, with both 98 and 98 se. ill include the various DLL's itll need in the zip folder. then hopefully itll work. but i have a feeling its gonna put a ton of files on the root of the cd, and if thats the case. ill just delete it. i only tested it on my 98 machine After installing all the updates and such the window is 512 x 360, i dont think it will cause a problem, the person can minimize it if they want/need to. ---------- edit # 2 updated the file, changed a few things (including order of installation) and changed the spelling errors. i havent loaded the copy of 98 into a virtual pc yet, my 98 se cd seems to be screwed up for some reason. ill get back on that as soon as i can. -brian -

while i was writing the first post up i was installing Kubuntu. when its up and running it seems alright, but it is sooooooo slow to boot. i dont know why either. is this common with linux? -
im willing to download and test all ubuntu versions and stuff like that, but i was wondering if anyone knew which would be the best version for an old dell inspiron 7000 laptop. i want to try linux a bit more (the first attempt i got scared lol) i have already had the live ubuntu 5.10 on my laptop and it handled it alright, but it was so slow to boot. i want to download a distribution of linux that would run good on an old laptop like mine. its a 366 with 384mb of ram. i dont want to try vector linux again because i couldnt get my network card working, so im going to just stick with ubuntu, but if anyone knows of a good distribution let me know. (also one thats fairly easy to set up for a total Nub when it comes to linux.) iv got a dlink dwl-650+ wireless b card to get working in this, and i know it loads cuz i had it on the net with the live cd. so, thanks for reading, and let me know what ya think would be good. also, sorry if i posted this in the wrong place/forum. feel free to delete. -brian

@os2fan2 wow that sounds like a lot of work although, i guess it takes talent to do all that, which i dont have @ripken204 whats wrong with an old dell 350? im messing with ya, a faster computer is much nicer. i do have a dell 366 laptop and i find it fine for what i do. just moderate internet and chatting, lots of chatting

i never use windows updates any more, i dont like having to update my computer so often. i often wonder how good they really are anyway... so, i just leave XP all "unsecure" and never have a problem anyway. but thats just me.

if you dont want to buy a new because maybe youve become a custom to it, i know what thats like lol, anyway heres what ya can do, try to get something that you can cut a peice of plastic off it, then attatch it there with some tape temporarily. when ya got that done, see if its working, then attatch it with glue of some kind, preferably the crazy glue brand, that stuff is awsome lol. hope you can get it working, i hate when i have to get a new mouse (im still using a simple 2 button PS/2 mouse that i got about 6 years ago.) -bian

Windows 98 PowerPack v3.0 released [details itt]

thank you so much for this pack, perfect! however, there is one thing that i might be able to help out with (ok, it doesn't need to be changed, i just wanna help out ) i was wondering if maybe you wanted to update the autorun file. perhaps i could help in this, maybe make one that will work with multiple languages and stuff. then the autorun will have a guided installer. to help the less computer oriented people out. let me know what ya think, and if your interested, i really want to help! -brian edit : wait, nevermind, sorry. i didnt pay enough attention to the auto run you already had in there, i didnt realize that when you click on the names of the programs it runs them or takes you to the folder. so nevermind what i said there. man im dumb i hope you know i dont mean any disrespect to your autorun if you would like to see the new auto-run however, here it is. -
Im not really one for icons and stuff on my desktop. anyway, heres mine. thanks to XPero for XPize and Nuhi for nLite , this installation of windows xp is great!

guys, i know what hibernation is, dont get me wrong. i use it all the time on my laptops and desktop, but i dont have 1 gb of ram so i dont know whats going on. it could be something wrong on his computer, idk. ill see what hes got to say about it. -brian
-
hey, glad i could help
-
lol yeah its a common problem. a lot of people i talk to that have laptops say the same thing. and its on 98/ME. 2000/XP seem to be great for wifi.
-
i understand what ya mean andromeda, but i just thought that maybe it was a problem with XP because i know that windows 98 had the same kind of problem with more than 512mb of ram. i know 98 didnt have the same hibernation option, but im just kinda comparing it. anyway, thanks for the replies everyone
-
hey cool, thanks guys, ill let my friend know.
-
sorry, im waiting on my friend to let me know. ill edit the post when i get the answer, thanks for the very quick reply! edit : shoot sorry, i didnt mention that he gets an error when he goes to hibernate the computer. the error is "insufficient resources"

what i meant about the xp cd that i have is that i purchased it after i had the computer for a while. it wasnt specific to this computer. i never did have the original 98 cd for this computer, but i did install all the OS updates and driverrs from dells website. the only real problem i had with this computer was my network card. because its a wireless card, and fairly new at that, your suggestion that the drivers were written for xp and then ported backwards, is actually a very good theory. it makes total sense to me. had i not had the wireless NIC card in this laptop with 98, i think that OS would have been great on here. it runs great on my armada 1700, but theres no NIC card in that. just all the stuff 98 loads, video sound and modem and infrared. those all load and run fine with 98. that computer actually out performed my inspiron 7000 with win98 (just in the boot speed) i dont know why it did, but it did. now that im runnin XP on my i7k and 98 on my armada 1700, im happy. both computers run great, and provide good speed for their age. im very happy with these computers sorry if i came off a bit rude in my initial post here in this topic. -brian

lol kool! thats awsome, i want one of those drives now.

a friend of mine has a computer with 1gb of ram and he cant hibernate the computer. aparently theres hotfixes for this, but they wont apply to his computer because he already has sp2 installed and the update is older than sp2. any one have any ideas on this subject? -brian
