i followed those instructions. and im gettin a weird problem. the virtual machine will not start, i just get a command prompt opening then closing extremely fast. im going to try following the instructions again because maybe i did something wrong this morning. i was in a rush lol. thanks again. -brian

thanks for the replies. i went and got qemu. now... lol i dont know how to use. im still currently reading through the documentation, but i havent seen anywhere that i can emulate windows within it. is it possible or no? i just want to play with this stuff, because i find virtual pc great for trying different stuff. like modding programs and that. id find this software great to use on this laptop if i could perhaps emulate windows 3.1 in it (always liked that OS) for programming. thanks again for the replies. -brian

hey everyone, i just wanted to ask if anyone knew of software that i could use on my wireless laptop that would be an alternative to SMC's EZ Connect stuff. the software works and all, but its slow as hell to boot up. idky, but it always takes about 30 seconds to maybe a minute for the icon to appear in the system tray and get connected. ever after doing a reload of windows 98. on my XP machine however, i just use the windows software to get connected and its so much faster. so i just wanted to know if there was an alternative to the SMC software. lemme know what you know. thanks for reading! -brian

i dont know about you guys, but around my area dialup wasnt even an option because of noise on the phone lines. my dad fixed that (turns out it was the builders fault, they didnt hook up the lines properly) and after that, the highest download speed i could get would be aroun 3 kb/sec. before , we couldnt even stay online long enough. just kept gettin kicked off ever 5 ferkin minutes. but anyway, the largest file i dled on dialup was around 20mb and it took just over 8 agonising hours of being kicked off and having to dial in again. not to mention the phone bill was increased because of it. stupid me lol about 2 years after that, we opted for rogers high speed lite. at first it was 32kb/sec, now its over 120kb/sec and we're still with the same plan o.O at first i thought i had accidentally uncapped my modem (how i do not know) but then we later found out that rogers had upped everyone because bell was going to release a newer, higher speed plan for less money. -brian-

gegettoxp, that case looks nice, but its not exactly my tasted in a case. its nice and all, but too flashy for me. andromeda34, that case looks a lot like the one i was looking at at plug'n'play (local computer place near me www.yesplay.com) and it was between that one and the one i did get that i was going to buy. the only reson i didnt get that one was because the one they had was a floor model and the one i got was new. so rather than save 10 bucks but have scratches on my case i just got the one i have now. not bad though, i payed 60 dollars for that one, along with a burner i got for 50. I'm more of a simple person when it comes to cases. i dont want to have to much on the case because then there comes the issue of something failing. i prefer to keep it simple with just a power LED and switch, reset button and hdd light. and front usb is really nice so is the audio ports out the front. very good idea IMO. -brian

thanks for the reply, but unfortuneatley i cant upgrade the motherboard, my dad doesnt wanna go through that fiasco again. ill see what i can do though. i doubt we'll be changing the motherboard though. i just want to know if the geforce 5500 will work on this board thats all, and if it does and his games dont run right, well thats his problem lol. he needs to realize that not everything goes his way. but ill still see what i can get changed. i dont want to buy an entire new computer though, it seems like such a waste to do so because the 1800 chip he has is fine for games, its just the video holding it back. if the card works and runs his games at low detail hes happy. and if hes happy then im happy. thanks again for the reply. -brian

im looking for a new video card for my brothers computer. he currently has a 9200 SE agp but unfortuneatley the motherboard in his computer only supports up to agp 2X , 4 works, but its terribly slow. either that or its something with the card. anyway, i was thinking of PCI instead, not PCI Express, our motherboards dont support that. the motherboard is a SiS 810L i think. its a fairly low end board, but we haven't had any problems with it. anyhoo, are there any PCI or AGP video cards that you guys would recommend? just looking for something fairly cheep too, under 150 dollars. and we want it to be able to play a few decent games, like Doom 3 with lowend to medium graphics. thanks. -brian edit, iv done a lot more looking at newegg.com and i found something that may work for what i need. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814143032 its fairly cheep thats what's got me worried about it though. the core clock speed on this card is 270mhz from what i see there, and the one thats in my brothers computer now is only 166mhz or so. so i think this one will work perfectly, just wanted to know if anyone has had good luck with this card. thanks again.

anyone know of any great wallpapers for a decent sized LCD panel? i have the smooth bliss one right now and it looks so nice, but i was wonder if anyone had any other recommendations for an LCD screen. just wondering, so leave your recommendations here guys. -brian

Desktop : AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 640MB Ram, 80GB HDD, ATi Radeon 7000 64MB, 19 Inch SAMSUNG SyncMaster 913V, Logitech Mouse Keyboard wireless combo thingy. Windows XP Pro Retail. (may not be super fast or w/e, but it does the job for me.) Laptop 1 : DELL Inspiron 7000 PII 366, 192MB Ram, 40GB HDD, ATi Rage Pro 8mb, Windows XP Pro OEM, 15 inch LCD (got this computer free from a bin ready to go in the garbage.) Laptop 2 : DELL Inspiron 7000 PII 366, 192MB Ram, 12GB HDD, ATi Rage Pro 4mb, Windows XP Pro OEM, 14 inch LCD (this computer was on a bench with a huge melt mark in the display and it also had what appeared to be a coke or something poored inside it, other than that it works fine. i have only one working battery however, need another one soon.)

im not one for big cases with all kinds of lights and chrome and stuff. i just goto the cases that have the least amount of stuff to break down inside the case, IE no LED's or extra stuff like that. although the case i have now has a thing in front of the cd rom drive that hides the drive away. ill post a pic of mine when i get back from best buy today. gettin me a 19 inch LCD woo! lol anyway, the case is totally up to you. just goto the store and see what they have in the way of cases and go for what you like not what other people like and try to make you buy. i find that as long as there is a duct on the side of the case and a hole out the back for a fan, your fine. my computer runs great in this new case, the CPU hovers around 43'f at all times, except under load, it can hit arount 47 - 50'f sometimes, but it recovers very fast. anyway, you decide. show us a pic when you get your new case. -brian

iv tried remote desktop, but the sound doesn't play through the desktop speakers, in fact it sends it through the network and plays on my laptop speakers. i also have my desktop hooked up to my stereo, so i can do that it if it comes down to it. thanks for the replies. -brian

how long does it take before it freezes? have you left the computer just sitting for a little while, kinda just to cool off? if so, then do what LLXX said and clean out the fan. but i would tend to disagree with the over heating thingy, i have had 6 laptops or so and they have never overheated. also, they area all old laptops, one as old as 10 years O.O if your computer contintues this weird behavior, a reload of windows might be in order. oh well, i hope you get it fixed. -brian
