  1. im currently having a problem with a computer where when it boots up the monitor says sync out of range. now, i tried booting into safe mode, that will set it to 640X 480 @ 60hz and that displays fine on the monitor. but when it boots into safe mode, it still does the same thing. is there any way to change the resolution of the monitor from say a command line with the windows XP cd in recovery console? if so, please tell, need the computer running fairly quickly. -brian EDIT : Got it working, went through keystroke process on my desktop, that didnt work, tried it on my laptop and got it, thanks anyway guys. mods delete this post if you want, sorry for so many posts latley
  2. hey everyone, im looking for a driver for a keyboard with model number KB-966S. on the manufacturers website, theres no driver for download. its irritating when companies do this. but anyway, iv googled quite a bit and still nothing. iv tried driver guide and still nothing at all. any help at all is appreciated. im going to try again on the manufacturers website to see if i can get anything. -brian EDIT : they appear to only have 1 driver for keyboards on the AOpen website. edit 2 : got it working, aparently the one driver on the site worked. thanks anyway, mods feel free to delete post.
  3. thats ok then, if i need to build one ill just forget it, i dont have the money to do it right now. is there by any chance a peice of software that i can load on my pocket pc to transmit info through a wifi connection? i know it can be done with itunes, but i cant put itunes on a 233 laptop. plus id like to keep the boot time to a minimum anyway. id like to use winamp or any other low resource mp3 player if possible. thanks. -brian
  4. everyone has good points here. i have one more to add. i prefer XP/2000 because theyre proven technologies. not to say that vista wont be as good if not better. im just going to stick with XP for now on my computers. i just like it, plus i just recently started doing windows updates (was always against em, i dont know why ) but ever since i started doing that, my computer seems a little bit more reliable. plus i just like the way XP looks on a laptop screen. too bad i dont have a fast laptop ah well. -brian
  5. thank you, XP is installing on one machine now and i had the right cd in it thanks again, didnt wanna have to reload the comp again >.< slow machine (366) -brian
  6. i have 2 dell oem xp cd's that when i install them on each of my dell laptops they automatically enter the cd key. i need to find out which disc has the code that goes with one of my dell laptops but unfortuneatly i mixed up the cd's. i have one copy installed on one laptop and the other is installing right now, but id like to know where i can find the cd key on the cd. if no one can help me thats fine, just wanted to know the easier way. -brian
  7. im sorry if i came off sounding rude. i guess what i need to do is actually test Vista myself, but unfortuneatly i cant. i dont have money to subscribe to the thingy and i dont want to give out my personal info. i heard however that if your invited in, you dont have the do that. but meh. ill see it in due time. anyway, id like to check it out, but yah... one question, how many different visual styles does Vista have other than the aero glass one? just wanna know. -brian
  8. but look at your page file usage and cpu usage? heres mine and im running XP on an 1800 athlon with 512mb of ram
  9. i agree with you. no offense guys, just not my thing. -brian
  10. i like all 3 GUI's, the classic , longhorn and osx but in all honesty, XP is my most favorite. clean and apealing to me. -brian
  11. for the most part, id have to agree with you. windows xp is one of the newest versions of windows, and its been in use for roughly 5 years now right? and in my opinion, xp is about the best. it might be older, but it still works great on almost any system. also, i should check out nlite. i only have 192mb of ram in this laptop, so maybe i can use it. i have just under 26mb left to windows right now, and all i have running is windows live messenger and IE overall this little laptop runs great, nlite may make it even better -brian
  12. I havent been able to get my hands on the vista beta so what im going on is just screen shots and what other people say. To be totally honest, if they do get all the bugs worked out, i dont think im going to like it very much. not unless you can set it to look like windows xp. the new UI on vista isnt all that appealing to me. sure the thing might be nice and stable, and i dont have a problem with that, i just dont like the new UI. i would probably use the old one from windows 2000. if theres alternate themes in vista, id also be interested to see them. i have only seen the aero one. i like the UI from the M3 era, like the longhorn one. not the longhorn slate one though. i dont want to judge it before i actually use it myself however. its just the UI thats holding me back from liking it right now. thats all. so whats your take on it? -brian

  16. hello, i finally found a webpage with the camera i have and i wanted to know if anyone had a driver for it. i got the camera quite heavily used (its missing the front of it and the usb cable was cut off) so i fixed it as best i could and windows wont get a driver from the net, it doesnt even appear to search. i had it working before so i know the camera works, but i just dont know what i did before. so if anyone could help me, id apreciate it so much, thanks in advance. heres the website its on http://www.alibaba.com/catalog/11269886/UCam.html -brian never mind that, windows xp finally searched the internet for the driver. dam that was irritating, it knew i needed a driver but when it went to search on the net it would just go right to the finish thing saying it couldn't find a driver. dumb windows. ah well, i got the driver. -brian i got the driver guys, dont worry about it. XP finally searched for the driver. -brian EDIT : i got the driver, don't worry about it anymore. xp finally searched for it.
  17. well , its a dell inspiron 7000 with 224mb of ram, ati rage pro 3d 4mb, 12gb hdd, 14'' monitor. i tried removing the 32mb of ram and that didnt work either. im at a loss, if it wont install, thats fine. ill just keep XP on it. its running good enough for me. thanks guys. -brian
  18. i was starting to think that may be it. i changed the hard drive to a blank one thinking maybe XP isnt really supposed to be on it, but that didnt work either. -brian Edit : actually... now that i think of it, i have 2 sticks on ram in this comp, one 32mb and one 128mb, the 128 is 133 mhz, and the 32 is 66mhz, maybe that could be doing it, ill take out the other chip and try again.
  19. i try to install windows 2003 server enterprise on my laptop and i get the following error when it tries to start windows part, just before you tell it what to do and where to install, basically the boot off the cd part. heres the error i get <bsod> A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. if this is first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appeares again, follow these steps: check to be sure you have adequate disk space. PS: i just started the install from windows, i dont know if this will work at all for me, but please i need help here, im not that bright when it comes to this stuff.
  20. im glad it worked, but i think i may be able to help with your new problem. why not try, just to see, setting all the computers to a static IP and see if that works out. and if it does, great, if not then see what the other knowlegeable people have to say, i really hope you can get it all sorted out, LAN's are a great thing to have! -brian
  21. just picked a copy of office 2003 up from bestbuy and i installed it on my laptop, install went easily and flawlessly. i just wanted to know what experience other people had with it, i heard good things about it so i decided to get myself something for school anyway. i needed it on my laptop for computer engineering anyway. (stupid teacher cant open rtf files on a comp, dont get me started on that i nearly got suspended over it) anyway, i payed $200 for the student teacher edition. dam thats expensive, but so far it seems pretty worth it. my friend also bought a copy of Frontpage 2003 but he said he didnt like it, so i bought it from him and i now have that too (great for doing up my webpages when i cant figure out what to do in notepad,. still learning html) anyway, i just wanted to know how everyone else is doing with this software. so far im really happy with it. i hope they dont phase it out too soon, the school is still using office 2000, so maybe it wont get phased out too soon. so let me know what you all think of it. oh yah, i really like how it looks on my laptop's lcd display lol. ever since XP stuff just looks nicer on LCD displays. -brian
  22. ok, heres what ya do, send me windows vista. lol. nah im joking, check out a program called Easyboot, i used it to make a windows 98 - XP bootable DVD (took a while, im really no good at this stuff) i also made a windows xp 4 in one cd (XP home and pro with SP1 and 2) either that or wait for some more replies, hopefully someone will. -brian
  23. i might be able to help, i have a lot of experience with windows and wireless networking. first, your going to need your windows 98 se cd so you can install the components windows needs to set up networking. first, boot the 98 se machine (either or) then when its done, right click on Network Neighborhood, goto properties and click the file and print sharing button on that window. turn on both check marks that are in that window that pops up. then click the tab at the top "Identification" Leave the computer name alone (or change to what you want to, this will just show up as the name of the computer on your network. change the workgroup to whatever you set the windows xp workgroup to. and computer description can be left alone or put whatever you want in it to describe the computer. click ok at the bottom of the window and let it reboot. do this on the both 98se machines, let them both boot up and wait a little while (roughly 5 mins or so) that way they can talk to each other. when this is done, open the printers window and share the printer you want to share, plus you can share other things, like files and other things of the like. let me know if you need more help, i have a lot of experience with wireless networking, and im sure if i cant get it other people here may be able to. regards, brian
