  1. neither of them ran by default, but 95 B (OSR2 and OSR 2.1) worked with Fat 32. Windows 95 a didnt. personally i really like windows 95. it was just so simple yet you could do a lot with it. i just wish usb and my wifi card were supported by it. then id still be using it. i have a copy of 95 on floppies too. it came with an old daewoo notebook i had for a while. lol.that always took ages to install. -brian
  2. "i have a copy of XP home that is an upgrade and that works like that. i need a full version of another version of windows. can be 98 or even 95 i think. but you need an old version of windows for it to work." what i meant when i said that was, you need to have the cd of the old version. you can boot the computer with an upgrade cd of XP and start to install it. it will ask you for he original 95, 98, me, 2000, nt cd and if you provide one, it will continue on. -brian
  3. hey there everyone i have decided to try and have my own website (yet again) but this time i think i might be able to pull it off. i finally have got a forum up and running, along with a few other things. theres not much to offer, its more or less just my own little place on the net to post stuff. if anyone wants to check it out. here it is. check it out and let me know what you think in the forums here or there. -brian ps. there are currently 5 open spots for a moderator there. more will open up as different categories and sub forums are made. let me know if your interested. this is going to be a group effort
  4. no problem, thats what we're here for. have fun on the forums! umm, i dont beleive thats right. an upgrade cd will boot a computer, and you can do a full install with it. you just need a copy of an older version of windows to prove that you can use it. i have a copy of XP home that is an upgrade and that works like that. i need a full version of another version of windows. can be 98 or even 95 i think. but you need an old version of windows for it to work. also, a friend of mine had a windows 98 se upgrade disc and we found that out the hard way. lol, i needed a copy of another version of windows. luckily he had a full version of 95 and that worked. so i know that works. maybe theres different versions of the upgrades perhaps? -brian
  5. are you connected to the network and aquiring an IP address? if not, and your wireless network is secured, check your WEP or WPA settings. Thats really all i can think of right now. -brian
  6. just like the government. they take something simple, and complicate the hell out of it. so what if a person wants to modify their OS fairly extensivley? who is microsoft to start dictating to us what we can and cannot do to our own peice of software that we PAYED for. thats bull**** right there for ya. if it comes down to it, and MS makes one for XP 32bit, im either not going to install it, or just go back to win 2000 or hell, even switch to linux (god that scares the crap out me cuz i havent got a clue as to what id be doing). i really like XP, so id like to stick with it. but ****, that just makes the OS no fun. -brian
  7. you can do a full install of xp from an upgrade cd if you have a windows cd from a past version. i know 98 SE works as does ME/2000. im not sure of 95, but when your installing the upgrade version it asks for it, and it lists all compatable versions. hell, i think nt 3 is there too. if you want, i can find out fairly easily, i gotta reload my desktop today, so ill reload it with my upgrade for XP cd and see what it says. -brian
  8. i havent had any problems with it, but then again, i dont do too much with the internet. just browse the net and chat on msn or aim. although, i thought there was a way to remove the limit? -brian
  9. hi and welcome to the MSFN forums. to get to your question, SP2 contains the major updates since SP1 and it has a few new enhancements. Such as, a built in firewall, the security center. this program monitors everything to do with computer security. it mainly monitors, windows updates, anti-virus software (if any) and the windows firewall. theres other little things like the wireless network icon in the system tray. it use to be the icon for the LAN but now it looks like a little computer with a signal being broadcasted out the side of it. another thing that is updated in the SP2 is the boot screen. before it use to show the windows edition you had, but now it just shows Windows XP then a blue bar. other than that, i cant think of much ofo the top of my head. if you want a complete list of the updates that are included in SP2, i can look and see if i can find it for you. -brian
  10. already got it working lol. thanks for the reply though. -brian
  11. thank you guys for the replies. i searched a lot longer on the net and found a program called "Diskinternals NTFS Reader" and i got the files recovered with that. aparently it just skips the security and stuff. so i got the files back for my friend and hes really happy about it now lol. just hopefully he doesnt fail english now. also, i bought the laptop off him for 35 bucks, any one know how to get a latitude cpi to power on? i had it working for a little while, but now its not. anyway, thanks for the replies. -brian
  12. this ntfs file system is great and all, but now i cant get access to some files i really need badly. my friends laptop just died and now it wont power on. nothing, it just sits there. so, i took the HDD outa the computer and put it into one of my external hdd caddies and i can see the folder i need, but i cant access it. my friend passworded his account. i also tried putting the drive into my computer to boot it up and put the pass word it to get the files, but the drive wont boot in my computer. it just sits at a flashing curser after the DELL logo thingy. and its weird, because both of our computers are dells. so i figured it would boot. but i guess maybe the difference in the bios is enough. my friend needs his files tommorrow or he fails english class. so, its really up to me to help him out. if i cant get it tonight, i most likley can tommorrow at school. but id kinda like to have it for him in the morning that way he can hand in his stuff and not fail english. is there anyway that i can remove the password protection from his account and retrieve the files for him tommorrow. if not then i will take my laptop to school with me and at lunch i can hopefully get the computer to boot. but id rather not rely on that. so does anyone know anything? please i need this badly. i can understand if you dont want to help, because it could sound like im trying to do something else. but i totally assure you that im trying to get files for my friend. if i cant get it tonight, i can hopefully get it tommorrow for him. so if you cant help me, i totally understand why. thanks for looking. -brian
  13. yah, i have an onboard nic. its a SiS 900 Fast PCI ethernet adapter. i could try enabling that on my board and hooking int my router with a cable. that may work. i already checked the manufacturers website and nothing is there for either my audio or dlink card. thanks for the reply -brian
  14. i just got vista installed and its working quite well. just one little problem, i dont have internet or sound. its like im running linux too, i havent a clue as to what to do with this. i need drivers for a Dlink DWL-520+ wireless B card and drivers for an Onboard SiS 7012 audio board. either 7012 or 7018, im not sure. if its absolutley needed, i can find out on my brothers computer. but if anyone knows of anything, its greatly appreciated. thanks in advance. -brian
  15. vista is done installing. man i like how it looks. i thought Microsoft had it great with windows XP, this is just a bigger step ahead. i really like this! and it didnt take that long to install either. -brian
  16. i just finished downloading windows vista build 5384 (10 hours) im installing it now, ill let you know what i think of it when im done. but so far i like the new install gui. thanks microsoft for the public beta. see MS aint that bad guys! ill also let you know if i have the same problem with my AMD athlon. hopefull its fixed. -brian
  17. windows xp uses a file called winnt.exe in the I386 folder to start installing itself. but the best thing to do is build the bootable cd using the files in that directory on your laptop there. is it like all the files copied from an XP CD? if so, then use nLite or any other way to make the bootable ISO then test it. it does work, my dad's dell laptop was the same when he got it. i made him a bootable ISO out of the backup partition. it worked, activated itself and all that. the setup.exe file on the root of the disc is actually just an autorun. if you try to run it through dos, it says "this program cannot be run in MS-DOS mode." you need to use the windows xp boot cd to get it to install correctly. if you just try to install it from the winnt.exe file , it fails if S.M.A.R.T. for HDD isnt enabled. i dont know why it does that, but it will start the install if you boot the computer from the original XP boot cd. hope this helps somewhat. -brian
  18. i dont know if this will help, but heres how i make a bootable XP cd after i slipstream the service pack. it might work for your purpose, because xp doesnt use a setup.exe file like the traditional 95/98/ME, you have to able to boot the computer from the cd to get the boot sector to get XP to install. either that, or use the original XP 6 boot floppy's wich are a pain because of how slow they are. so i recommend copying all the files in that partition to a folder, and then follow bart's way to make the XP cd. if you need the win51.sp1 or win51.sp2 or however theyre named, let me know and i can send you those files you need. i hope you can get it working. -brian
  19. i gotta agree with you, Opera is fast, plus its free like FF so its a double bonus. -brian
  20. iv used opera for quite some time as well, and i do like it. its faster and less resource hungry than firefox and yah it does have some really nice skins for it. if IE6 goes unsupported, i might have to start using that on my laptop. so when that does happen, im going to use windows98 lite with IE removed and the old 95 shell and just run it like that with opera. i think that make for a nice fast computer -brian
  21. basically i want to take those rectangle things that come up around everything, and make it so that they only come on when i push a key on my keyboard like windows 2000/XP. theres gotta be a way to do this, im sure of it, because there are some programs that run in windows 98 or ME that dont even display them at all, like Opera Browser. some microsoft programs do that too, i cant remember which, but i know there are others. anyone have any ideas? im clueless here any help is apreciated. thanks for reading. -brian
  22. lol yah. I don't browse that many pages at once or have that many windows open anyway. So I don't really like the tabbed browsing, just because I dont have that much of a use for it, thats me though. Plus, I don't like the way IE7 looks right now. I hope they make it so you can change the layout of the buttons and stuff. The main thing I don't like is where the forward and back buttons are. I liked the way IE6 looked, just I dont like how somethings work in it. I'd like to see a native popup blocker in it too. That would be the best. Perhaps maybe an updated version of SP2's popup blocker. -brian
  23. hey kool, glad you got it working. -brian
  24. whats wrong with windows 95? other than the USB it was a good operating system. i used it for about 6 years, until i got an XP machine. All the OS's in between 95 and XP i didnt think to much of. Except maybe ME, i like that OS. it runs good for me, never had any problems with it. 2000 was good too, but XP was just way better. runs better too. anyway, the best thing i think your going to be able to do is load up 98 and change the ui like LLXX said, its the best your going to be able to do. hope you can get something done, oh whats the specs on the 95 system? just for interest sake. -brian PS: maybe try seeing if they can get a different modem, one with a cat5 connection on it, then tell them to get an old LAN card that has support for windows 95. thatll work too.
  25. iv been using internet explorer for a long time just because its faster on slower computers and plus its just less memory hogging. but frankly im getting a little irritated with MS and how theyre making a new IE but only for XP and Vista. why dont they at least take the XP SP2 IE 6 and port it to windows 98/ME/2000. id like to see a popup blocker native to IE. plus it would be a nice update for me rather than having to use this 4 or 5 year old IE 6 SP1. if it keeps going this way, im going to FireFox. im not really trying to say much here, i just want to know what everone else thinks in regard to this. -brian
