  1. You're looking at the event logs on both client and server? Clients are fully patched? Have you run a network trace before this happens? Has this ever worked? -gosh
  2. Microsoft also offers email support. I'm debating if i should research this. Have you used regmon? -gosh
  3. It's the same file. It's copied to the hard drive because some windows components only read the unattend settings after setup. The product key should be removed from the answer file. -gosh
  4. SXS is side by side dll's. I bet you burned the iso wrong or the ISO was created without long file names -gosh

    no sp3(xp)

Asking how to fix a problem in a beta isn't complaining, he just wants it to work. And besides, a problem in an RC will probably be in the final version anyway. What you need to do is delete the following files in your windows\inf folder: infcache.1 any *.pnf files (these are caches inf files) any oem*.inf files (these are renamed 3rd party inf files) Make sure you're using the latest drivers, sounds like a drivers issue. You might need to wait for updated sound drives from your manufactor. You could try posting in microsoft beta newsgroup. -gosh
  6. It's the holidays most people take off time
  7. What's the point of these "common problem" threads? Isn't that what the search function of this site is for? -gosh
  8. How about telling us what error you are getting -gosh
  9. It's important to remember that in windows 98 the limit is not really the memory, but the SYSTEM RESOURCES. Win9x has a limit for how much memory it can use for stuff such as paint brushes, handles, things like that. So even if you have 2 gigs of ram you might only have 70% system resources free and might run out of memory. This is a system limitation which is not in Windows NT. You're better off just limiting the memory win98 can use up to 1 gig. Windows 98 was not tested for use over 1 gig and has bad performance over 1 gig of memory. -gosh
  10. Check out my services inf edit: look at services.inf not the other one, it's not finished. -gosh g3_services.inf Services.inf
  11. XP has bootfix.bin that shows you that "press any key" message. If you dont press any key setupldr.bin will pass off control to your hard drive. To me this sounds like your BIOS doesnt have a hard drive configured as a boot device or the hard drive hasn't been made bootable by fixboot c:, or sys c: XP Setup will sys the drive for you, so if it's failing, it's something in the MBR such as a MBR virus or a 3rd party app like Drive overlay. -gosh
  12. Whats event viewer say? Does this happen in safe mode? -gosh
  13. You can use system restore Find out the name of the service using services.msc, then go into the registry and delete parameters IE if service is called Wireless, then go to HKLM\system\CCS\services\Wireless\Parameters - delete the stuff here. the settings also might be under the GUID of your NIC in same registry key. -gosh
  14. XP RTM - only supported up to 127 gigs out of box XP SP1 - when you slipstream sp1 into xp then do a clean install, supports over 127 gigs xP SP2, 3 - same thing -gosh
  15. What you need is to slipstream your source to the same version you have installed. Microsoft does this because mismatched versions can cause issues such as your password not being accepted in recovery console. -gosh
  16. www.microsoft.com/MAP The Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Solution Accelerator is an integrated platform with tools and guidance that make it easier for you to assess your current IT infrastructure and determine the right Microsoft technologies for your IT needs. It offers easy inventory, powerful assessment and actionable recommendations for Windows Server 2008, Windows Server Hyper-V, Virtual Server 2005 R2, Terminal Services, SoftGrid, System Center Virtual Machine Manager, Windows Vista, and 2007 Microsoft Office. The popular Windows Vista Hardware Assessment readiness tool will be integrated into this platform. This automation tool helps IT professionals and consultants like you establish a clearer understanding of your infrastructure, desktop and virtualization needs through network-wide assessment of your assets including desktops, laptops, servers, applications and network devices. Actionable recommendations are provided through the auto-generated migration proposal reports and documents. In addition, the new MAP user interface also offers a "resource center" where users can download other relevant tools and useful resources such as white papers and technical guidance from Microsoft and other sources from the IT community -gosh
  17. Uncheck box to inherit from parent, use winfile.exe from NT4, run cacls (or whatever it's called in vista) to see the permissions on it -gosh
  18. UAC is a system policy applied at startup with resources in shell32.dll and configuration in secpol.msc -gosh

    Partitions

if this is a new computer you need to be careful because your OEM might have installed a drive overlay. I would recommend contacting the OEM first to make sure blowing away the partitions won't hurt anything. In recovery console you would type mkdiskraw 0 assuming 0 is your hard drive. Type mkdiskraw /? to see the syntax. This will blow out all your partitions. Then you want to use diskpart to create the partitions, then format them using format /FS:NTFS, all within recovery console. Then reboot and run setup -gosh
  21. Just use a flash drive, much easier. A cross over cable has many limitations, such as slow speed, and you can only go one direction, ie you can share a printer on one computer but not both. -gosh
  22. If you have a LAN or Cable you can use safe mode with networking. You want to disable 3rd party browser extensions. Make sure you re-register the IE dll's. Reinstall IE. -gosh
  23. To remove notepad just delete it. There shouldn't be any dependancies, although because it's installed by default some microsoft programs might just assume it's there. It's not an optional component like wordpad. Although because it's so small i dont see why you would want to remove it. -gosh
  24. Microsoft did the same thing with XP. In the original version of XP system properties would only tell you the current speed of the cpu, not the max cpu speed. Some laptops will reduce the cpu when the laptop is not in use to save power. SP1 included a fix to show the max speed because OEM's were getting calls from confuzed users wondering why system properties showed there cpu as slower than what it should be. I expect this was exactly the same situation. Users were calling there OEM's wondering why the memory listed was less than the max memory, so the OEM's requested this fix from microsoft. -gosh
  25. Use HKLM,"SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management","PagingFiles",0x10000,"" I disagree with the people saying dont disable the paging file. There's many reasons why you wouldnt want a paging file. I disable it in my VM's. You dont need to reboot to disable the pagefile. You can use my guest vm inf that ive been working on for my vm guests that ill eventually release on my future site. -gosh vmconfig_guest.inf
