  1. So you boot from CD, then before you get the screen that lets you install windows, you get the NTLDR error? When you boot from CD, it gives you F5 option to load drivers. After that point it uses the drivers it has. If it can't access your hard drive you'll get an error at that point. -gosh
  2. on startup it should already scan system files, and on the x64 bit version of vista it should only allow signed drivers (at least in the kernel i believe) -gosh
  3. Thanks for the reply. It occured to me i could possibly use a legacy nic? I need to research how exactly hyperv uses drivers. It was my understanding hyperv uses the drivers on the host OS, so i dont understand why it doesnt detect the nic in the guest os. -gosh
  4. I've given the answer. You're burning the CD wrong. You are using the wrong compatibility mode, which is truncating the files. The problem is not the cdr, but the compatibility mode you are using. -gosh
  5. Add the files to dosnet.inf and txtsetup.sif -gosh
  6. If it's restarting then you have your computer set to auto reboot on bugcheck (blue screen). You can go into safe mode and check event viewer > system to see what the details are. You can also disable your hardware in device manager in safe mode to find the problem driver. It's simply a bad driver. You could also enable startup logging (i believe thats /sos) to see what it stops on. -gosh
  7. i know its not support, i just want to know if there's a way to get it working. if you look at the inf it says minversion 2195, which is the build number for win2k, so obviously it was designed to work on win2k and at a later point they dropped the support. Anyone got any ideas? I want to set up a win2k forest in hyperV.
  8. Has anyone figured out how to use hyperV with win2k clients? I can manually install the drivers, but i get a blue screen everytime. It looks like the hyperv integration services were designed for win2k. Any idea? -gosh
  9. That's probably an incorrectly burned CD. Make sure you are burning the cd correctly. Use cdimage.exe. Or copy the CD to hard drive (possibly from dos), and install from the HD. -gosh
  10. Maybe the path is too long or you have an invalid character somewhere in the path. If you copy and paste the path into a run box does it work? -gosh
  11. Make a new profile, migrate data to new profile. -gosh
  12. Just disable the service. You're making a big issue out of a minor issue. If you really want to you can use group policy or registry permissions to disable it, but again just disable the service. -gosh
  13. I'll be at the phoenix launch tomorrow at the phoenix convention center, feel free to say hi! -gosh
  14. You have a lot of opinions but no facts. Server 2003 was forked off the windows xp sp1 source tree. You obviously are very ignorant about how microsoft forks off from a source tree. Whenever microsoft makes a new OS, it takes the latest codebase and "forks" it off to another source tree. Windows xp 64 bit is forked off the server 2003 source tree. Originally longhorn was forked off the xp source tree, but then because of all the changes made in server 2003 longhorn was later forked off the server 2003 source tree. Server 2008 is forked off the vista source tree. I know for a fact, i used to work for microsoft. You didn't. You act like you know everything when in fact you don't know anything. There has never been a version of windows server released that said it was "SP1". Instead of spouting out opinions next time back them up with facts. -gosh
  15. here's some pics. Although i couldnt take a pic of the recycle bin in windows.0 because i deleted the folder.
  16. Windows server 2003 was based on the XP sp1 source tree but it didn't see it was version SP1. I totally disagree server 2008 is stable because of all the testing. I used the beta of server 2003 when it was in beta, and it was rock solid. I tried the rc0 of server 2008 and after just a couple days i had a ton of errors so i removed it. The final so far seems as buggy. It also used 8 gigs (12 gigs with the page file), and i found it slow, even though i have a new computer with dual 2.8 gigahertz processors and 4 gigs of DDR2 ram. I think once people start upgrading to this theyre going to be very disappointed with the performance. -gosh
  17. I installed server 2008 final x64 last nite. My initial impression: I installed on a freshly formated 80 gig partition. And yet, after the install i had 2 windows folders - windows and windows.old. Windows.old was empty except it had a recycle bin in it. Both folders had the same create date so i assume setup did this. Also, if i go to my computer properties, it says "Windows server". That's it, just windows server, not windows server 2008. It also says copyright 2007 even though it was released in 2008. Also, it says Service Pack 1. I looked in the registry and the registry says it's service pack 1. Why would the final version of server 2008 say sp1?????? Also, the recycle bin properties shows my partitions in the wrong order. It lists them as F, then C, etc. I dont understand why the recycle bin would list the drives in random order Im starting to think server 2008 isnt ready for prime time, just like vista when it was released. Waiting for SP2 -gosh
  18. Vista is the same as XP as far as folder type Vista will try to determine the best file type based on content, that way if you have mp3's the folder will have columns such as artist, cd, etc. The key used for this is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations For example, the my pictures folder uses Image. if you delete image from the above folder, the task for my pictures goes bye bye. For mp3, i assume vista would be using Directory.Audio. See what's there. As a last resort you could delete that key and you won't see that task ever again. Also, the text is in shell32.dll. If you search shell32.dll for "s h o p", you'll find the text. You could hex this file to remove the text. -gosh
  19. Well vista uses a driver for UAC, so, enable boot logging and see what the last service was loaded. You could try sfc /scannow (if that still exists in vista) or repair vista -gosh

    Vista Cert

Ive been studying vista and was thinking of taking 70-620 i believe is the one for vista. But no testing places where i live offer the test, id have to drive 200 miles to take the test. Is it worth it? Has anyone taken 70-620? What was your experience was it easy? -gosh
