  1. CabPack - free (i think it's GNU?) GUI front-end for Microsoft's MakeCab. Works on nearly any Microsoft OpSys (not Win3x and older; dunno about Vista). Otherwise (I think) you can use IExplore IEAK. Lots of other "freeware/shareware/payware" out there... Google, google, google... @dirtwarrior... beat me! glad to see ya, m8!
  2. Agreed... check for Conflicts (IRQ, DMA, etc). New hardware added recently maybe? Check that BIOS and REAL hardware settings. Windows only uses what it's told to, ya know... One-by-one, you'll find the culprit.
  3. I think that and most the rest of your post is only valid for XP Home.Interesting... just fired up other PC (XP Pro loaded 2wks ago) into Safe Mode - 2 ID's show - "Administrator" (the "hidden one") and "submix8c" (the "owner")...Guess it must really be "Home Edition"... edit - @Ponch - My mistake... XP Pro "hides" the Admin account once a new user is added or the "guest" account is activated. XP Home "forces" you to add at least one user account (usually the "owner") which is by default an administrator and the Admin account is then "hidden" as in XP Pro "rule". (correct?) Guess I must be confuzzing myself during multi-testing installs...
  4. ?? Upon new ("clean") install of XP, the Administrator account is usually only accessible in Safe Mode. The Master ("Owner") account is created (in addition to standard Administrator) and is also an Administrator. Autologon is "on" at this point. When the "Owner" creates a "Limited" account, Auto-logon should be "turned off" (it does this on its own). Now a Sign-on Screen will always appear. With multiple accounts, you should't have Auto-Logon enabled.Your statement is not too clear on that... and AutoLogon should NOT be enabled if there is more than one ("normal mode", as opposed to "safe mode") user. If you've somehow managed this, then XP is probably beating its brains out trying to "bypass" loading the Limited User (dunno about that). How's it respond with AutoLogon disabled for either account (Owner/Admin or Limited)?
  5. Every time? Not sure, but I think First Time Logon it 'll always be slow (building the new "profile" for the New User), then it's a little "better" next time. Also, if Fast User Switching is enabled, and one logs on then another, this'll impact "sign-on performance" (for want of a better term).
  6. Yeah, I can get in (click in My Controls, then bottom Go To Forum); it's just "odd". Thought there might be a "glitch" disappearing/reappearing during Maintenance that may need addressed. Ennyhoo, anyone else experiencing this should just be aware it's not "them" and it's simple enough to "bypass"... (glad I'm not the only one)
  7. First, "98Lite" will NOT remove anything BUT what you want removed. Keep the whole Win98 install (screw 98lite, then), go to "add/remove" and uninstall anything you don't need. Stop the Task Scheduler and any other "service" you don't need. Second you stated QQ needs IE5.5 (and you also stated "and up" ), IE6SP1 should be just as good (even better). Lastly, yeah DO install BUT turn off Active Desktop too (as suggested). It has nothing whatsover to do with the existence of the "required files"; they are installed, just not used by the Desktop. (this is assuming you go with Win95 OR Win98) Slim that puppy down until the only thing running is all that you really want, otherwise resources will be consumed... (part of the reason I suggested 98lite). Heck, the same thing goes for Win95! 75mhz+48mb ain't much, but it'll fly (unless overloaded)... Heck, go onto Ebay and get another CPU and some old memory sticks (cheap, bud!).
  8. If I remember correctly (some info from somewhere on MSFN?), each computer has to have all User-Id's (unique to each computer) defined. Example: User1 and User2 are defined on both Machine1 and Machine2; User1 signs onto Machine1 and User2 signs onto Machine2. Voila! (works for me this way). It's one thing to "share" a folder (it can be "seen"), another thing to allow access (for given users/groups). Just a common workgroup name doesn't work. BTW, I tried "Full Access: to "Everyone", but it doesn't "stick". Have to define another "group", add "group" to Folder Permissions, assign "Full Access" to that new "group" and assign all relevant users (after defining them) to that "group". Or if you a "nervy" (I ain't) assign the set of users as "Admins" and do above... HTH
  9. "98Lite" may or may not "slim down" the 98SE so it won't hog resources (haven't tried it). Find it and check it out to see if it will suit your needs...
  10. WINNT.SIF... (UNATTEND.TXT) XP slightly newer (more parameters?) then 2K, but essentially the same. Browse around...
  11. Using FlashGet (6-part "split", ie. #of-connections) shows ~600kbs (however that figures...). Basically, just a few minutes (up to 10 maybe?).
  12. WOOHOO! New Website... lookin' good! Downloaded RC from it and will test first opportunity. edit - and still awesome download speed...
  13. Ok, this has happened before and then magically "went away", now it's back. I clear my browser cache (including off-line), clear cookies, clear history AND clear Java (SUN, BTW). (ref. this post: Clear Cache First Sticky) I open my browser (IE6SP1), go to address "wxw.msfn.org" (the "x" is to prevent URL insertion), click on Logon button, enter my userid/password, and the screen repeats! The crazy thing is that I am logged on! I can then go to eg. "My Controls", then to the bottom and click button "forums" and I'm right where I should have been (used to be) after initial logon... What is up with that Logon? Again, symptom happened before, went away, and now is back. Heck, I even go to ALL doc/settings user-ids manually delete AND in the Windows folder... nothing anywhere!!!
  14. ... and look here (HP Compaq for WinME) - Driver for 98 and ME SAME FILE! And it was determined a waaaayyy long time ago what the device is... This is not the problem, but I have noted that the "pickup" is from INFS\OEM0.INF (not the latest). Potentially mix-and-match files (the CAT and SYS) files are criss-crossed. Yes, the files from ESS may work as well (they appear to be the same as the Service Pack), but all files related to it have to be removed (including the ones in the CABS folder), otherwise wham bit again! Bottom line: the correct INF must be used along with the correct SYS file (screw the CAT file, but use the correct one anyway). Wrong INF, right SYS, bad parameters set up from INF for the SYS in question... AFAIK, the PC is/has been using all of the Compaq stuff from the Original (Factory) Install. It appears that the D-Link is after-the-fact. And as you can see, the Modem is no longer being "picked up" (if it still is in the "box"). I suspect that the BIOS was updated by the stupid Compact Interactive Update stuff, and that method is notorious for failure. Even worse, when a BIOS is updated, usually the original settings are lost! Hence the reason most people download, save somewhere, make a boot floppy with BIOS stuff on it, back up the BIOS, write down the settings, then "flash". Problem is WinPhlash/Phlash does not give an option to "back up", so usually UniFlash is used to back-up (and restore if necessary). Crappy Compaq Phoenix BIOS!!! Been there, done that, sux! MOBO is an OEM-version Standard Intel. If only HP/Compaq would stop using their own BIOS (no more "closed BIOS Options selections")!
  15. Monitor irrelevant. External to the computer (a "peripheral" device, like the physical mouse). DIAG.EXE documentation (help/how-to-use text inside package) does not indicate anything other than "diagnostic tests"; nothing on "changing IRQ's", etc (I have already downloaded and checked). Could potentially "unpack" the package, reboot to Command Prompt (strict DOS) and run it (the only way you will get to, since it's a DOS-only program) to see if it actually does anything else wonderful after the NIC is detected. Mikey has Integrated AGP, not a PCI Add-In VGA card (read above...). Most "newer" (read "not old") pc's having Integrated AGP (or even AGP slot for and using AGP Video Card) have an option to add a PCI (read "not AGP") VGA/SVGA card to use as a second, or "alternate" Video interface (as in, not a peripheral device, but a necessary component requiring at least one-of, just like the memory, CPU, and exception-to-rule-keyboard-unless-disabled-for-dumb-server). Go to HP.COM and search on "Presario 7585" and you'll see what I mean (I mean the specs)... His only add-in appears to be the NIC... Heck, he could yank the Modem (if it's not part of the "sound", POS "combo" cards) but that may not even help. Butthead HP does NOT provide a PDF User's Guide, just krappy "basic" on-line info... OH, if we could ONLY see how that stinking BIOS works!!!! And... I did notre that the PC has the "latest bios", so one might wonder how it got updated, seeing as how Mikey never did it (no floppy at the time and never used it, remember?). Only other way would be to use HP's stupid "update on-line" crap (a disaster in the making)! BTW, sound under DOS will NOT work; the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS entries were removed per agreed-upon suggestion. The whole problem must lie in the installation of the Sound Drivers (IRQ "hard-wired" in the BIOS) and the (possible) conflicts with the NIC.
  16. Spybot TeaTimer - accepting changes to registry when popups is a disaster. The idea is to think first, eg "what is changing my registry?". Certain programs, for example, are supposed to (eg MRU lists), other may (or most definitely must) not change the registry; this is where those wonderful trajans come into play... accepting registry changes indiscriminately!!! Better train the users on "what it is/what it does/how to use it". If it's an "ok to change", it's set once and never bothers you again. Know thy spyware/adware/trojans! If you say "not this time", you will at least find out whether it's blocking what SHOULD be allowed to change; if you NEED the change, set "allow always" (or some-such). Or just leave it off and bite the bullet... BTW, you should clean infected pc's in Safe Mode with the System Restore Disabled, otherwise they crop back up again... Been through this crap several times with a neighbor's kids' computer ('download id***")...
  17. Did you have/get AVG Antivirus (free edition)? It runs at startup... Spybot S&D also runs at startup... Yes, Ad-Aware (free) must be manually run, the Pro (pay) version runs always... Question... which products have you installed? You'll get a better answer...
  18. There are actually 2 cd's for MCE; first one is stock-in-trade XP Pro (with the exception of some additional drivers in I386 and in the DRIVERS.CAB), second one has MediaCenter/TabletPC software. Only an MCE key will install the MCE stuff. You also need other items in the Root of the CD(s) and the CD Boot Image (to make it bootable). You will also be lacking the additional folders found on CD1. On that subject, look around here and Google some. There's a lot more to this subject than just the "basics", in addition to the slipstreaming of SP2 does NOT slip the MEDIACTR folders (contained in the SP2 pack). There's a special method for doing that. I can't give any more info on that since I don't have/use MCE, but I have done some reading on the subject. As for the "additional software", some may be found under special folders on the Recovery/HP CD's and are installable, some can only be "installed" via Recovery/Reinstall and are not directly accessible (unless you know therir brand of "magic". A good question to help you out... do you have actual CD1/2 of MCE plus one or more "additional software" CD's or just Recovery Disks? If Recover Disks, it may be possible to find the remaining items "required" on it/them. BTW, I'm somewhat confused. Why would you slipstream SP2 on MCE2005? Doesn't MCE2005 already have SP2 components in it? Also, It looks like you have the option (during initial setup after you bought it) of selecting EITHER Home OR Pro/MCE. At least that's the way my Nephew's worked... HTH (out...)
  19. ... just noticed something... from HP Compaq 7585 Specifications - Unless I'm mistaken, you do not need an IRQ for PCI VGA; this is for when you use "dual monitors" or use a PCI Graphics card instead of the built-in AGP. Setting the IRQ for that item to "none/disabled" will free that IRQ=3.I have an older PC that has an AGP (board-in-a-slot) and the BIOS has a selection under the "PNP/PCI Configuration" Heading for "Assign IRQ for VGA = Disabled" (can be enabled, but not needed, so no IRQ assigned). It's an Award BIOS; yours is Phoenix/AMI, so it will be in a different place... Anyone else got a thought on that? Or correct me if I'm wrong? It seems to me that selecting "Use Default Settings" instead of "Setup" or "Optimized" in the bios may not be the way to go... 1 - Disable that item in the BIOS 2 - Set/Enable "Reset Configuration Data" 3 - Save Bios Settings/Exit 4 - Reboot 5 - Uninstall (In Device Mangler) the ESS and the D-Link (do not reboot), then exit the Device Mangler 6 - Immediately go to Add New Hardware Wizard... JEEZ you have a mangled BIOS selection screen as well... Which Heading do you see the setting under anyhow??? Under "Advanced"?
  20. Yup... one/several of the "new"/"updated" is/are the bastid(s)... last release was just fine... ...and I don't make bets with folks who have the edge...
  21. Dumb questions, maybe... Have you "cloned" (or "copied") your original 20gb-HDD to the flash drive? If so, when you boot to the flash drive it will be seen as C-drive. (you never mentioned what's on the flash or how you made it "bootable"). As for the D-drive, it must be the way you made the flash drive boot... is it by chance creating a RAMdrive? (that would be D). Do you need a driver loaded for the CD-ROM? (if in MS-DOS, you need that) Old Toshiba - BIOS limit for 32GB? Dunno if BIOS update would exist allowing up to 132gb. You would need that, otherwise only the first 32gb will be recognized. Last but not least, what OS are you working with?
  22. I voted 1-3-3. Barely passed Typing in college (major AS in Systems); teacher had mercy on me (C+). Key a lot, but have to go back and correct. Lost left index finger... DANG that slowed me down!!! Moral - don't lose stuff you may need later, even if it doesn't work that good in the first place (hint, hint)...
  23. Dunno about the PDF thing, but MS has a CHM (Compiled HTML Help) Help Editor (free); takes some "fiddling" to figger it out. Or did I misunderstand the question?
  24. WOOHOO! And that's a quote from Zxian, so there's the answer; "intellectual rights" are defended. May get deleted, but there musta been a reason; may get modified, so complain to the "editor", otherwise don't post "property" if you don't want it modified away from your original version. After all, this is a free and open board. I don't think anyone (MSFN) wants to "steal" anything from you. If you don't want to "give it away", don't! If you want to "sell it", put it somewhere else... I got no complaints; just here to get help and to give it (if possible). I see no "ownership" in anything I put here, or I'd put in on my own "server" and accept "Pay Pal". ("Depends on what your defintion of IS is"... we're splitting hairs!)
  25. Do a google on RPC1 ORG (not in quotes); underneath is a link to "Dangerous Brothers", click on it. You might find a Firmware for your model; follow instructions. Your DVD is probably toast, so like you said it won't hurt... I have one (DD0405 P.O.S.) that went belly-up (BTW, I always use some kind of "reduce-read-speed" software to keep from burning them out due to hi-speed reads) and it now sits in a pile. Good luck...
